The next day the dutch, carmen and braum and i got a canoe to take us on a little tour around the lake. it was super touristy - like you visit all these places where they show you how they are making traditional stuff by hand, blacksmiths, weaving, etc. etc. but that is what i had expected, so i was prepared. we did get to observe life on the lake though - there is no shoreline here, so the villages, the houses, even the monasteries and pagodas are built on stilts in the marshland, and people use canoes to get around, even just to visit a neighbor! i mostly just liked riding around in the boat, through floating gardens, watching ppl row with just one leg (it's strange here, hard to explain!). the dutch had also ... read more

Inle Lake: And yet another amazing place. a large lake surrounded by mountains. The shore line is covered by a km of bog. This is where many people have made there homes right on the bog. Creating farm land, planting crops (tomatoes)on floating strips of bog that are attached in the lake bottom with bamboo poles. Houses are all on stilts. I spent one day on a canoe trip through some of the bog visiting a couple villages. After 6 hours of canoeing our guide Mr Latte took us back to his house for some food and a beer. The people here are so nice they will do anything for you.I spent the second day here relaxing checking out the town I'm staying in. Checked out the local Market. On the final day me and 2 friends ... read more

*Many of the photos in this blog entry were taken by Jeff Roberts at www.eyeballimaging.com/blog ©2007* After leaving Bagan we took a short flight to Heho airport, an hour away from Inle Lake. After checking out a few hotels we found a brightly painted room on a dusty local road in the town of Nyaung Shwe, about 20 minutes by boat to the lake itself. We were hungry, so we had lunch at a little locally-owned restaurant next door to our hotel. The restaurant was covered in Jesus images and Catholic shrines, and the straws in our drinks had been turned into little plastic crosses! Apparently missionaries succeeded in affecting at least a few people in Burma. The food was good though, and the lady who worked there was very friendly. She told us that if ... read more

Today was my last full day in Burma and we spent it cruising around Inle Lake in a motorized canoe, from which we visited floating shops and nearby villages. It was the send off I hoped it would be. The first 10 miles of the lake seemed more like a river with parallel banks made-up of tall river grasses abd thatch-roofed stilt houses. We were amazed when the lake expanded and seemed uncontained, with water on every side as far as the eye could see. The backdrop was layers of hills and mountains topped with white mist and clouds. Fisherman speckled the lake, rowing with their right leg and casting net with their arms. Other boaters gathered sea weed and purple-blue water lilies. The large lake became over-grown with sea grasses and plant life which deceptively ... read more

An overnight bus ride North of Yangon is Nyaung Shwe, Inle Lake area. Generally the next stop on any tourist's list and well recorded by the Burmese military. They try, or at least request your passport everywhere you go- for bus tickets, guest houses, check points... Anyway, at Inle I found a bicycle, a farm run by a small family w/ two beautiful twin girls, a hilltop temple, a canoe, lots of tomatoes, and "Larry". Larry speaks great (sometimes hilarious) english. He takes tourists on hikes he himself doesn't like. And he longs for the peaks around the city of Kalaw, a small town further nw of Nyaung shwe. Business is business, but he seemed to much prefer living simply in the hill country. He was more than happy to speak of all these things with ... read more

Happy Birthday to my big brother Chris. I will have been celebrating your 36th birthday for 14-and-a-half hours in Burma before you are "officially" 36 in California. I'm bummed I wasn't able to speak with you, but only leave messages. The phone call was $6 per minute and not always available at choice times. Just know I thought about you and was sending birthday wishes in my time zone and in yours. ----------------- We left Bagan the morning of the 7th to fly north to rural parts of Burma. Our intentions were to see Inle Lake and some caves in Pindaya, but with only two days remaining were told the caves would be difficult to schedule. The flight to Heho (Heyyy!!! Hooo!!) airport was brief, but no one told us it made frequent stops...like a bus. ... read more

Hallo daheimgebliebene! Das Essen hatten ... read more
