Servus miteinander!

For us, the 'road' to Mandalay took many forms, carrying us through the Burmese landscape in a variety of vehicles, from local buses and pick up taxis to horse carts and finally, a boat that took us up the mighty Irrawaddy River to Mandalay. We joined the good ship "Shwe Kiennery II" at the Nyaung Ou jetty at the ungodly hour of 4.45am one Monday morning. No clapped out old fishing boat this one, the "Shwe Kiennery" was a modern, purpose built passenger vessel equipped with two V8 engines, an air conditioning system and a bar. She was capable of a top speed of 13 knots and could carry up to 130 passengers. But on this particular day in February, there were just 18 of us. It was so luxurious that we felt like characters from ... read more

Pulling up his longyi, Naung Naung proudly shows us the tattoo of a rabbit on his right thigh, surrounded by a faded swirl of Pali inscriptions. "This one makes me jump higher", he explains, his face deadly serious, before pulling open his tattered shirt to reveal a tiger on his chest. "And this one gives me courage!" This goes on for a few minutes, as he shows us a succession of significant tattoos - each located on a specific part of the body - and tells us the blessing each one bestows. I'd read a little about this custom before, (sometimes precious stones and amulets were inserted just beneath the skin to complement the inks and enhance the mystical significance), but hadn't realised it was still practised. I'd read that in times of war, many Burmese ... read more

Pyin Oo Lwin - Hsipaw - Kyaukme - Inle Lake (Nyuangshwe) The railway employee's uniform - green knitted jumper complete with knitted train didn't scare me, rather it was the very young soldier with a very large gun that put me off taking photos.... It's no big surprise in Burma that trains move at a remarkably slow speed. That doesn't stop a few middle aged tourists making a special journey to travel over the impressive Gotkiet Viaduck somewhere between Pyin Oo Lwin & Hsipaw. The train crawls over the viaduct as the land falls away beneath, opening up to a massive gorge, waterfalls & somewhere far far below, a gushing river. Not only are the giant windows open, but so are the doors, giving a fine opportunity to lean out & marvel at the mind blowing ... read more

Before I started my journey to Southeast Asia I had read some comments about Myanmar from other travellers and one or two of them wrote that the highlight of their trip was Inle Lake. In addition I have watched so many TV documentaries etc. about the Inle Lake and the fishermen that I couldn’t miss this spot while finally travelling in Myanmar myself. I wanted to see the beautiful lake and the famous fishermen with their unique 1-leg rowling technique and take some beautiful pictures of them, but then when I finally get there things turned out to be different than I expected… - Nyaung Shwe - I headed from Yangon towards Nyaung Shwe and the Shan Plateau in central Myanmar with big expectations, especially because one of the reasons why I wanted to travel to ... read more

This blog by Jacqui: An easy flight from Bagan to Heho and by 11 am we are in Naungshwe, the delightful jumping off town for Inle Lake. We stumble upon the Aquarius Guest House which offers clean $12/night rooms and free Chinese tea, banana milkshakes and local snacks whenever we arrive home from an outing. We end up loving this town and start and end our time at Inle Lake here. Luckily for us, the 5-day revolving market happens to be at Naungshwe the day we arrive so we become hunchbacks as we navigate the low tarpolines that offer reprieve from the sun for the market-goers. We try some market noodles which are remarkably delicious and hire bikes to eat and drink our way about town. The following day, Sumi, our non-english speaking boat driver takes ... read more

January 3, 2007 (Happy New Year !) We are in a town called Nyaung Shwe, just north of Inle Lake. Inle Lake is a vacation spot for the Burmese and there are some expensive resorts in the middle of the lake. We found all tourist items (food, water, snacks) being the most expensive in all of Burma. As we are coming towards the end of our Burma trip, we just want to relax and do little. We met a Burmese guide, bringing a French group around on his tour. His name is Moe Moe and speaks good English and excellent French (according to our French friend Sonia). Moe Moe told us he learned French for 10 months, 2 hours a day, 5 days a week. Sonia is very impressed with his French (and with a french ... read more

Our trip to Inle Lake, home of the Intha people started off in high spirits as we shared our taxi with fellow travellers, Ven and Anita from England, Laura and Sarah from the US via Laos and Therese from Switzerland via Singapore. The topography was vastly different from the dry plains of Bagan and so were the people. The trees and the rolling hills seemed greener than ever after the browns and greys of the east and the people reflected the landscape, dressed in warmer clothes for the cooler climes. After settling into our guesthouse we were off to explore the town of Nyaungshwe, the gateway to Inle Lake. Nyaungshwe also known as Yaungshwe means Golden Banyan tree and according to our guidebook would be over run with tourists in the high season and we were ... read more

I had no idea what to expect from Burma. Out of all the travelers I have met along the way, only two had actually been there before. Everyone else had stories of people they knew who knew other people who had dared to risk traveling within Myanmar's untouched territory. I couldn't seem to get 'the bus ride from hell' story out of my head no matter how hard I tried. A guy I met knew another guy who had taken the bus from Yangon to Inle. It was a long journey and very uncomfortable. After some time the bus began to climb up higher and higher into the hills around windy and precarious pathways. As they curled around a sharp curve, he watched in horror as the bus just ahead went too close to the edge, ... read more

After an extensive decision making process the previous night as to what time we should head onto a boat for a trip around Inle Lake itself, we don't make it onto a vessel till midday despite promises of mid morning. So, because we are all cacthing buses that arvie - the three aussies - the two of us and Melbournite Matt - climb aboard our long boat and settle in for the luxurious comfort of a plasitc chair with life jackets as cushions and giant golf umbrellas to protect ourselves from the sun. We first have to travel down a canal to reach the lake and were mighty impressed when a woman sat bout 2m high from the water and overtook us at at least 40km/h. But this was nothing in comparison to the hidden and ... read more
