hello all, we have made it to Bocas in panama. After leaving Puerto Viejo we had to traverse an old converted railroad bridge into panama. It was rickidy and wooden boards were placed to allow cars and trucks to pass and was about 50 ft. above the river below. Needless to say, lindsay was shaking. We then caught a taxi to Changuinola (where chiquita bananas come from) and then caught a water taxi to the isla de colon. It is amazing here, very pretty and the water is crystal clear. Today we went on a snorkeling tour and boated through the most beautiful paradise of water and islands we have ever seen. We stopped at an island to go snorkeling and we agreed that it was the most amazing place ever. We met a couple from ... read more

Ok, so we left Isle De Ompetepe and headed for San Juan del Sur. God, feels life ages ago! Stayed there for almost a week and had a great time with the guys we´d met on the island. We did some beach time, boogie boarding and a fair few big nights out, which usually ended up with all of us paddling in the sea chatting some kind of rubbish enjoying the feel of the warm sea inbetween our toes. We also managed to get a room for $10pn for the 3 of us! After San Juan we went to San Jose for 4 nights. Nice city, most developed one we´d come accross, and most expensive. Hostel was OK though and we watched a fair bit of telle in between the downpours and whilst one of several ... read more

Hola all, Sorry for the long repreve from the computer, but we're finally back into the technology savy areas of Costa Rica that have faster (and cheaper) internet connections. So hgappy reading... After Granada, we decided to return to CR on a path slightly less followed... i.e. by ferry down Lake Nicaragua. The first portion of this journey took us on a 4 hour boat ride to the Island of Ometepe. We jumped ship here and made plans to catch the next one passing by that left in 3 days, giving us some time to explore this cool island. The island of Omotepe was formed by 2 volcanos that rose out of the lake side by side and have since joined together as they grew. A very beautiful spot; it still retains Nicragua's traditional rural lifestyle ... read more

I’d like to think I’m right about a lot of things but the weather isn’t one of them. In my last blog entry I confidently stated that I thought the dry season was here because some strong winds had blown away the rain and it was sunny for a few days. Well, was I wrong about that. Before my dirt road could even dry the clouds rolled back in along with mist and light rain—and it’s been that way for several days now. I know the dry season will come, I’m just not sure when! Perhaps early December? Maybe around Christmas time? It’s all a game with Mother Nature! She knows I want it to be warm sunny here, and NOW, particularly so I can chide my friends in the northeastern U.S., but she knows I ... read more

They say man isn't meant to live underwater. Well I survived my first few ocean dives. Previously I had only dove in a small man-made lake in Ohio for my certification in June. Reef-diving in Belize is a little different! Belize has the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere and the largest in the world after the Great Barrier Reff in Australia. I stayed on Caye Caulker, one of the main islands off of Belize mainland, about a half-hour boat ride from the unfortunate capital Belize City (i will put off my experience of this city until next time). The island itself is supposed to be a tropical paradise...and it is pretty, though I didn't really like staying there because of the noise and there are all these decrepit characters lying around whose main job ... read more

Today we drove into Escazu after Bill's dental appointment in the nearby town of Pavas. We wanted to visit the EPA store, the Costa Rican Home Depot to get ideas for the new house. At EPA we ran into another woman we know from the San Ramon area who'd come into the city with two other couples to shop at EPA and our version of Price Club, Pricesmart. It's a small country. I got in trouble for taking pictures of the orchids in the garden center. I hope you appreciate the pics Mom. Luckily, Bill didn’t understand what the lady said so he wasn’t embarrassed. We left EPA shortly after my scolding and decided to find a place to eat. With all the traffic Bill was thrilled we decided on a hot dog stand we'd eaten ... read more

So I forgot to mention in the last blog about my costa rican experience with the fucken banks there. So when I first arrived I had to try and track down an ATM well theres hundred of banks all over the city but none of them worked. So that night I thought I was gonna go hungry until this guy from Melbourne staying in my dorm whom was also traveling the world bought me dinner and a beer. I didnt even catch his name, nice guy. Next day I went inside a bank only to be told that ATM´s dont accept all cards and it depends on the bank weather they take only visa or master card. That was lame. Also on my first night at the Hostel Pangea in San Jose I met this older ... read more
Trail up to Gary´s

So I get to Gary´s place and was surprised to see a tent in his yard and a small little house. After the small talk Gary takes me inside the little house and tell me that it only has a bathroom and a kitchen. The sink and shower (which was just the head) are outside and so is his tent where he sleeps. I couldnt help but ask then was the point of building a small house if everything was outside. His response was that he needed a place to store his surf boards. Hardcore. After the intro it really started to rain and I thought great, I came here to get away from the caribbean rain. I could see Gary getting cabin fever and says to me at one point if it stops we should ... read more

We then headed back to Guatemala our new home it feels and it was good to be back. We made it to Rio Dulce in one day from Placencia, stopping in Livingston en route; realising there’s nothing there and finding digs in Rio Dulce instead, lake Izabal! We have found a very nice place to stay to celebrate Michelle’s Birthday (30 Nov). It’s a bit luxurious and pricey compared to what we usually pay but still only about 11 quid! The website is www.tortugal.com if you wanted to have a look. We have our own little bungalow and Michelle is well chuffed as it’s very nice and all romantic, so a perfect place to spend a birthday! It’s been great, free kayaks, stunning views, swimming and chilling. We visited a little place called Finca El Paraiso, ... read more
