Over Four Years….. I’ve been so busy I missed the fact until just now that on June 5th I marked my fourth year of living in Costa Rica. It has been an amazing time. Since living here, I’ve gone to the beach more in the past four years than perhaps in the last 20 years, repaired/replaced my car brakes more times than in the last 25 years, and have laid in my hammock—well I never had a hammock in the states! In all seriousness, my time here can be described in many ways: rewarding, interesting, enlightening, enthralling, exciting, and even frustrating at times, however, I have no regrets about living here whatsoever. So, overall, it’s been very good. You might be wondering what has made living here a good experience. Of course, each person’s view is ... read more

It’s been a little while since I wrote so I thought I’d take the time once again to share my thoughts with whomever is ready this—hopefully many people. I get many emails from people. Most are from people who want to be here, others are already here and want to learn more about San Ramon (where I live), and others just want to get to know other people in the area. Whatever their reasons, it’s great to hear from people who also are taking the “road less traveled.” The photos throughout this blog entry are fairly random—just a smattering of our properties and our clients. Some of them I will admit were taken by clients who apparently have much better cameras than I do give the crispness of their photos vs. mine! Back in the U.S. ... read more

When will the rains come? We’ve had some spurts of rain lately and I would have that thought that by now the rainy season would be in full force with the typical afternoon/early evening showers but we have not seen that yet. Maybe I’m just forgetting as I enter mine fifth rainy season in Costa Rica. I’m sort of hoping they come soon (even though most people that realize I prefer the dry season), because this transition season is no fun. At least in the U.S. fall is a great transition to winter, but here it is as if the weather makers cannot make up their minds so they just make it overcast or cloudy for much of the day (at least where I live on the outskirts of a cloud forest). This only seems to ... read more

It’s been since March, 2008 that I updated my blog. That’s over a year! I didn’t realize it had been so long. So, just to get a few facts straight: 1. I’m still alive (and well!). 2. I’m still here in San Ramon, Costa Rica 3. The B&B is still here—and we now have super-duper high speed Internet. 4. I’m still doing tours and real estate development. 5. And, I’m still traveling the world when I can! Photos The photos throughout this entry are various scenes from the San Ramon area. What’s up!? So, what’s happened in over a year or lately? Well, I’m settling in nicely after four years of living here. No, it didn’t take me the entire time to settle in but now I’m extremely comfortable with life here. I’m more patient, take ... read more

It’s hard to live in Costa Rica and not get to the beach frequently. Even if those of us living the Central Valley complain about the heat and humidity, too many tourists and higher prices, it is still fun to get to the beach. This is definitely a benefit of living here—being only about one hour from the coast and 1.5 hours from a nice, white sand beach. I wish I could go more often but work keeps me busy most days. We are in the midst of summer here now which means sunny days, warm temperatures and most importantly, no rain. As I’ve said in many blog entries, I prefer the summer, or “dry season.” Sunshine just does wonders for the spirit and doesn’t cause the problems I’ve had in the rainy season such as ... read more

Since I moved to Costa Rica and have been keeping up this blog, I have been writing a “year-end review,” which is essentially my take on the preceding 12 months. With the holidays here and everything going on, I thought I’d get it done now—well now, meant I started it several weeks ago but I finally finished it today. So here goes, and it’s bound to be long-winded! Looking back… Wow, what a year! I never thought I’d be as busy as I was this past year and the “life-changing” events have been numerous. A few highlights: 1. Finished up addressing some medical issues—with a clean bill of health! 2. Helped (mostly moral support) friends/colleagues transition from bad business partners to….good ones! 3. Figured out (finally!) who to work with and trust! 4. Definitely determined I ... read more

This blog entry includes some recent pictures I took of San Ramon—all fairly random—but they give you a flavor for this terrific town. It’s been windy today! And chilly! I’m sure it is still in the 50s but it seems like it is freezing out for someone now used to semi-tropical and tropical temperatures. The winds are supposedly a signal that the season is changing. I do this every year and usually I’m wrong (as it’ll probably rain again tomorrow!). However, AM Costa Rica (www.amcostarica.com) reported that the season is beginning to change as evidenced by the winds picking up, pushing out that sometimes miserable rain! We’ll see. I do know it is getting closer! More signs of change…. Another of signs of change has been the views of the Pacific Ocean looking out from the ... read more

It has been quite some time since I went horseback riding, perhaps as long as six months. A number of factors have contributed to this fact. First, one of my horses died of old age and the remaining one I donated to a friend’s collection of other horses and animals since my surviving horse seemed very lonely. Second, I’ve been working much more than I should. This needs to change! I do enjoy horseback riding and I had a terrific experience recently. The photos on this blog entry are from this trip. So, we saddled up five horses with the premise of going to look at a large farm in the Magallanes section of San Ramon. While we saw the property—or some of it, as it was 172 acres—it was mostly just a fun trip through ... read more

This is the longest I think I’ve gone between blog entries with my last one being on August 29th! I’m usually a fairly prolific (okay, long-winded!) writer but I’ve just been so busy the past few months that there has been barely enough time to keep in touch with friends and family let alone write my blog. Tours, tours and more tours…. May through September have been extremely busy running our Boomers in Costa Rica tours—www.boomersincostarica.com. We’ve been really fortunate to have met many terrific people from different parts of the U.S. who are considering retiring in Costa Rica or just looking for a new life or business in this friendly country with a terrific climate. The biggest benefit of the tour for most people is that they get a real sense of what everyday life ... read more

It has been quite some time since I’ve updated my blog. It’s been well over a month actually which is unusual for me. Since my last entry, travelblog.org crashed and lost a lot of people’s blog entries. Luckily for me, I type all of my entries in MS Word and save them in multiple places (just in case my blog becomes famous after I’m long gone). In fact, if you look at my last blog entry, which travelblog “found,” the captions on the pictures of my trip to Thailand all read, “recovered:” http://www.travelblog.org/Central-America-Caribbean/Costa-Rica/San-Ramon/blog-183513.html. Luckily, travelblog only lost two my 73 blog entries. Now I just need to figure out which two! I think the main reason I have not written is that I’ve been so busy and the only time I seem to have to write ... read more
