Me, my husband and our 6 month baby girl are planning a road trip at the end of this year. We thought of NZ since it is quite clear on how to hire an RV and just drive around the islands then I thought of doing something similar but in Mexico since I think Mexico has many things to offer and see. I mainly see offers for all inclusive vacations but can't really find any information about driving around the country and if this could be done within a normal budget. Also, will it be safe?
Reply to this Hola. Well it definately can be done, and I spent most of my youth with my family doing just that, but unfortunately times have changed. Mexico is fantastic, but there is an element of risk when driving in an RV in Mexico, I'll get to that in a minute, but first, roads are fairly good, you will have stretches where it is narrow with no shoulder, potholes can sometimes be the size of small buses. Cargo trucks hog the road. Signage is in Spanish..with the last name Marcela Rojas I would think you should have no problem with this? The scenery is out of this world in some places, tragic in others. Mexican insurance is quite expensive, gas is fairly priced but you will spend alot, and there is roadside assistance in some regions. You will see desert, jungle, subterrain forests. The beaches are endless. A normal budget should spread fairly well if you are cooking your own meals and limit staying in expensive RV parks.
Back to safety, yes there is a risk. Having an RV pretty much puts a 'looking for trouble' sign on you. You may be targeted. However there are incidents of danger and violence everywhere in this world. If you stick to a well planned route, stay in RV camping parks, never pull off onto an isolated road to camp. Let people know your ETA and check in often, try not to fall for fake accidents, or injury/broken down car ruses, don't flash wealth, make sure you have plenty of supplies and extra emergency tires/gas/water with you, then you should have a descent safe trip.
Most people start in LA (USA) travel down the Baja, take the ferry across to the mainland Mazatlan, drive the west coast with stops in places like Guadalajara, cross through Mexico city, to Varacruz head towards Cancun, then down to Belize, then back up to Merida and follow up the East coast towards the USA. Depending on how much time you have of course. I hope this helped.
Reply to this A couple of my friends regularly rent a car in Mexico and camp around (including free camping). Mexicans love babies, so you're sure to get positive attention and good treatment. There are places plagued by problems with drug lords--read up and avoid these. There are tons of other fabulous, affordable, friendly places to stay. My faves are the Oaxaca area and the Yucatan Peninsula--both with lots of interesting indigenous groups. Enjoy!
Reply to this Thanks for the great advice! At the end we think a road trip to Mexico will be a bit difficult since our baby is quite small and perhaps it is a country to visit and remember, so we will wait a few good years and take her to see wonderful Mexico. I am Peruvian and I am quite aware of the dangers of travelling by road in Latin America, I think this trip will have to wait a few more years.
Thanks for taking the time to reply!
Cheers,
Marcela.
