Travel and Volunteer work in CA?

I just need opinions and facts! Anything will help.

I am a 20 year old female and would love to travel in CA sometime this year, probably closer to Christmas-time. I'm just in the planning stages right now but super excited! I know basic Spanish and will continue to study the language until I leave, so I'm not worried about that.
Does anyone have suggestions as to where I could go? What countries are your favorite? Best scenery? Safest? Cheapest living? What cities should I stay away from? Etc, etc....
Also, does anyone know of orphanages or schools I could volunteer with? I love working with children, so anything along those lines would be perfect!
Any suggestions or advice would be awesome! Reply to this

Hey Abbi,
I´d really recommend coming to Guatemala! I´ve been living here for 3 months, volunteer for a community development organization that works in health. I got my placement through EntreMundos, a local, non-profit NGO that has placements with over 130 different projects. Depending on your interests, Spanish level, and time commitment, you can volunteer with children, education, agriculture, construction, the environment, health, women etc. All the information is available free in their online database, you can stop by for a personalized consultation for 3$ if you are already in Guatemala, or they can place you ahead of time for $40. I used this last service and was impressed with how efficiently they worked.
Best of luck!

Hi Abbi and welcome to Travel Blog,
The Sapir Family You may want to read some blogs by The Sapir Family as they have done extensive travel in the areas you are traveling to.
Costa Rica is by far more developed, modern and easy to move around in so you may want to start there to get your feet wet. If you have basic Spanish that will serve you well and I'm certain your skills will improve.
If you google volunteer opportunities in Central America you will find many opportunities. Haiti is still in need to volunteers and help. You will need to arrange this ahead of time. You cannot just walk in and start helping. They will need to do back ground checks and make certain you have had proper vaccinations.

Guate is my favorites. But regardless of where you go, you should definately check out Barefoot Atlas (www.barefootatlas.com). tons of cool volunteer opportunities that don't cost anything and add a lot of meaning to a trip Reply to this
