Central America Caribbean » Haiti May 30th 2007

Today we toured the slums of Haiti, where The Salvation Army operates schools for some of the poorest children in the country. Students are not only given a good education for a fraction of the cost of other schools, they are also fed a nutritious hot lunch, the best (and possibly only) meal many of them will have each day. The Salvation Army school in one of the suburbs, Fort National, was the smallest school I have ever seen. Located in a densely populated suburb, the school was a very narrow, three storey building. In one 3metre x 3 metre classroom sat 26 students, neatly cramped into bench desks! However despite the difficult conditions, the students are happy and getting a quality education which enables them to have a better start in life than many ... read more

25-27 May 2007 The sun crept up over the mountains and caught us napping. We were onboard the Caribe Tours bus on the three-and-a-half hour ride back from Barahona to SDQ from where we would connect to Boca Chica. A few minutes ago, a suspicious bus driver had demanded to see Vibert's passport thinking, of course, that he was a Haitian. There is a slight undercurrent between Dominicanos and Haitians. Shanna sharply told the driver that it was not necessary and Vibert quickly relinquished his "Haitiano" status. Back in SDQ we wrangled, pretty efficient this time, and lowered the taxi fare from 1000 pesos to 600. The bus didn't do the Boca Chica run and we were too tired to gua-gua. The coast was scenic as we sped past the airport on to what would be ... read more

Located at the bottom of the Leeward Islands just above the Windward Islands, Guadeloupe is an accessible cruising destination in the Caribbean. Guadeloupe has up-to-date yachting facilities and several ports of entry. Travelers can also explore a number of the small outlying islands while cruising the area. see; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guadeloupe Guadeloupe is a lively center of Creole culture, boasting a spirited blend of French and African influences. As well known for its sugar and rum as for its dive sites and resorts, the archipelago offers an interesting mix of modern cities, rural hamlets, rain forests and secluded beaches. See: http://www.antilles-info-tourisme.com/guadeloupe/p2-in-gb.htm We made it Bas du Fort, called them on VHF radio, we needed diesel and gasoline badly. Maribel struggle with the French, finally getting a lady that spoke fairly well. We went in, fue... read more

We filmed again at The Salvation Army’s clinic in Port-au-Prince today. More suspected cases of malaria, TB and malnutrition. Moving to the back of the clinic, we got to see the Nutrition Clinic in full swing, with mothers given a cup of milk mixture to feed their babies. The mixture is made up of sterilised water, milk powder, oil and sugar. The mothers are also given enough of the mix to take home with them in order to ensure that the child is fed properly until the next day’s clinic. A lot of these malnourished babies were still being breast-fed, but because their mothers were also malnourished, they weren’t getting their usual dietary requirements from the breast-milk. In the late afternoon we headed out to dinner with Steve from the orphanage but our attempt was ... read more

Just to make things clear, Im not out of the country again, though I would sure like to be. I have a idea that I have been spreading some word around and I wanted to start to make some final plans up. Heres the plan. I am going to plan a trip down to Utila from around the 29th of July through August 6th. Utila is an Island in the Carribean that I have been to over 7 times in the last 4 years. Its a magical place that will be totally different than anywhere you have ever been. This is not a typical Sandals type vacation, which I despise, but a journey through paradise with Reed Whiting as your guide. I will have everything lined up ahead of time and we will even have ... read more

Hello Tarts one and all Today sees the start of my second week officially on the Ship. Apparently on this blog thing you can upload a map or something but I can't be bothered and the internet connection is a bit, no wait very poo. So to let you know, I am at a small island owned by the company called Princess Cays (think little island like Jack Sparrow was marooned on, but with shops, cabannas and oh yes, ME! Well, yesterday I had an insanely hard day shooting the first embarkation of the next group of suckers that are cruising with us for a week. To give you an idea of what this means - Mea and another photographer have a backdrop each of a very cheesy beach scene complete with idyllic boat and palm ... read more

24 May 2007 The 415 km bus ride from Rio San Juan to Barahona started at 8 am. It would take us back thru SDQ. At the tiny bus terminal in Rio San Juan, we met the nicest guy - Manny. He helped us store our backpacks and took us to the only open breakfast spot - Pica Pollo Benito - aplace we would have normally bypassed in our search for culinary delights. But Benito seemed to be a local favorite and that morning he served up hot boiled yucca and bacalao with egg (saltfish and egg). Another specialty was deep-fried cheese. We passed up on that one. At the station again, we wolved down some of the goodness before saying 'adios' to Manny and then we were out of there. What a pleasant little village. ... read more
