Today we spent all morning filming at The Salvation Army’s Health and Nutrition Clinic inside the compound at Port-au-Prince. The clinic opens at 8am but when we walked around the corner to the entrance at 7:30 there was already a crowd of more than 50 people lining the “waiting room” benches under a shelter outside the facility! The clinic is mainly for mothers, babies and young children, but because it is one of the cheapest health facility in the city, adults who can’t afford to go anywhere else are also treated. The clinic is a great example of how The Salvation Army runs in Haiti. It is not just a service but a ministry. Every morning before the doors open the clinic staff have a time of devotion with the waiting patients. They sing, read ... read more

Hej allesammen!

Catarata de Rio La Fortuna I A 70m sparkling ribbon of pure water, cascades down from on high.Yesterday Jenny and I were determined to make it to the La Fortuna waterfall, and that we did. After paying a moderate entry fee (3,500 colones each) we walked down the trail to the falls. The LP guide book claims it´s rather challenging, ´think stairmaster with a view´but it´s really not difficult at all. There´s concrete steps! The whole way! On the way back up, Jenny was able to easily keep ahead of some reasonably fit-looking local guys, food poisoning and all. Part way down the trail there is a view point with what would be a great view, if not for one tree sticking right in the line of fire for basically any good photo. Isn´t there some ... read more

Lähdettiin Antiguasta ajamaan Lago de Atitlanille, Santiago de Atitlaniin.

Sunday today and we were off to the local corps bright and early. We visited the many Sunday School classes that were running - the kids are so cute with their white outfits and the girls with their hair done in bows! It was Mother’s Day in Haiti and they had a visiting pastor in who was very lively! The singing was spirited and we had a great time even though we didn’t understand a word of it! Luke hadn’t been able to work out why he was getting so tired… turned out that the cold-and-flu tablets he was taking are for night-time and cause drowsiness!!... read more

HEy guys, once the travel bug bites, there is no cure. So, I went back to SB, got straight A's through a random semester at SBCC and now, somehow wondered into Panama. After being here for 4 days, there is not much I have seen. I flew into Panama city, and drove around the city for a while then caught a bus straight to Bocas Del Toro. Bocas Del toro is a palce where everyone should go. I admit, It is touristy and a little pricier (but still cheap ) compared to the rest of Panama, however, it is wonderful. Being rain season, you can expect rain everyday, even though it comes and goes. For the past three days, I have been soaking up the sun, going to the beautiful secluded beaches, hiking, biking around ... read more

We boarded the 8am bus out of Santiago and on to Sosua. We liked Santiago with its big city allure and then not, a kind of big little city feel. The intention was to spend a few hours at Sosua and then gua-gua to Rio San Juan. When we disembarked after two hours, we were met by a taxi driver who attempted to hussle us away from Sosua and on to the ´touristy´areas of Puerto Plata and Cabarete. "Only Dominicanos, nothing to see here", he said. Shanna explained that we were headed to Rio San Juan and since Caribe Tours didn´t do that leg we would take a gua-gua. "No good. Must take 4 gua-guas. I take you drive around and then Rio San Juan for special price - seventeen dolares". We thought it was way ... read more

Food Poisoning and Rivers Running Brown Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » La Fortuna By TicoTime May 26th 2007 Immaculate Scenery Caño Negro, in all its glory.Recall how we gushed about the best meal we´d had in the Teatro Nacional, in San José? Well we´ve been gushing for days, and paying for it aplenty. The entire time in the Caribbean side and our journey back to La Fortuna was fraught with headaches (of the loco local type and other of the melon kind) and stomach pains and let´s not forget, diarreha. Jenny got the worst of it. That´s because it was in her avocado chicken salad, full of sprouts and broccoli, and I just cleaned up her leftovers. So the first morning we were here (after suffering with it three nights in Cahuita, one more ... read more

The last 2 days have been wild. Intensely hectic trying to get things sorted, taken care of. I haven't done all of the things I've wanted to get done before leaving. It will mean doing things at home for people and mailing things to the ship, putting off auditions, long emails making decisions rather than having face to face conversations. Somwhere in all of the madness, I've done my best to savour the moments I could. After yesterday's lovely day in Costa Maya, it was my last formal night on the ship. A lot of people, nearly everyone I socialize with, went to the disco. It was a lot of fun. It was sad at times. I danced. I had DJ Brian play all my favourite dancing songs. I drank my last mango daquiri. I took ... read more
