By this time it had become very clear that sticking around the boat with Alex and the gang was not an option. Fixing the sail boat for more than a couple days was just not in my travel agenda on this trip so I took off for Langebaan Lagoon for an epic kite surfing adventure… so I hoped. I arrived to 30 knots of wind in near perfect conditions. Keep in mind that you get conditions like this about once a year on any MN lakes so to say I was stoked was an understatement. The only problem with wind this strong was my gear was too big so I searched out a local kite shop and rented a smaller 6 meter kite, which was ideal. I had a brilliant day on the water making a ... read more
After a few days in Knysna Harbor I was really starting the like the logistics of our marina spot. With 20 restaurants, a Yacht Club with Bar, and Hot Showers only meters from the boat, this was clearly paradise as far as conveniences when sailing. While sitting around the boat making some repairs we met a young local couple that invited us to come to a party down the road about 20 miles in a town called Plett Bay. We showed up for drinks at a casual bar on the ocean as they told us they had bought us tickets to a huge foam party at some bar called Vegas in Plett. This night was clearly getting more interesting by the second and I had high expectations for a remake of my Cancun experiences 10 years ... read more
After a long night at a coffee shop in the Johannesburg airport my journey was close at hand. I hit the ground in Durban, South Africa early in the morning and it was hard to miss Alex with his two year beard and a huge smile waiting to greet me. We headed back the boat in the harbor and basically ran errands and prepared the boat for one of the most difficult stretches of coastline in the world over the next couple days. As usual Alex knew everyone around the marina and had some cool friends which we hung out with during my short stay there. Late Tues. night we had our last of the crew come in from the US. Diego sailed with Alex from the Galapagos Islands for a few months and has been ... read more
As if the Running of the Bulls was not enough fulfillments for one vacation I still had 5 days left to drive to Africa and wander Morocco for a few days. So after dropping off Alex and Irish at the Airport, we picked up our new Canadian companion Erin. I don’t think she had any idea what were in store for her over the next few days, but then again either did we. We hit the road from Madrid heading across Spain to Gibraltar, where you guessed it the Famous Rock of Gibraltar lies. It is actually a British colony so when we got there late that night we had to go through customs. We tried to get a hotel here, but everything seemed to be full and expensive so we decided to head back 100 ... read more
8 Times going back to the little island of Utila and it still gets better every time. Mostly because we had a great group of guys that gave it all we had for a hell of a week that seemed like an eternity. Usually I remember vacations going by fast but we jam packed so much in to everyday I think we tricked our brains into thinking we were there a lot longer then we were. That just means I can lay low for a few weeks in Rochester. Not like there’s anything that comes close to these traveling experiences anyways. So it all started as I met with my good friend and ex Ohio State teammate Paul Turc down in Atlanta. Lucky for him the flight was delayed or he would have missed it. The ... read more
This blog has been a long time coming as I got back from this trip over a month ago, but with all that happened on this trip I needed to write something to remember all the things that happened. Before I start I just want to say that this festival called San Fermin, better known as the running of the bulls, was one of the greatest experiences of my life. It was complete sensory overload for 2 1/2 days. You see on most trips you go for a specific purpose whether to party, the culture, sightseeing, sports, or a small mixture of them, but San Fermin is everything to the max and to top it off some of the most beautiful girls in the world. It was really like being on a total high the whole ... read more
I survived, barely that is. That marathon was definately the most difficult physical thing I have ever done in my life. At this point I am over coming my last pain in my torn achilles tendon. I want this puppy to heal so I can start running again and training for my next one. Running that race was like finding a drug Ive been looking for ever since I played my last game for Ohio State. Now I know I kind of called the Thong thing off, but as I was packing my suit case on friday I saw it and through it in with no real intentions of wearing it. I mean how embarrassing would wearing that thing be, I just couldnt bare it. Yeah Right.. So the story goes were at the mall after ... read more
Here we go. After 6 months of running, running, and more running the race is finally upon me. Its been an interesting road. I definitely started this journey thinking I was going to conquer this thing on my first marathon and qualify for Boston. What I didn't realize is doing a advanced training program and keeping injury free is tougher than I thought. Over the course of the summer and fall I had to taper things down from time to time with a knee injury and plantar facsitis. In Reed terms thats when your heel hurts really bad and its tough to walk. So here I am days before the marathon and getting extremely excited. To be honest Ive been so consumed in hunting the last couple weeks and that I haven't thought to much about ... read more
Two weeks in Honduras, Actually on the Bay Islands off the coast of Honduras and Mostly on a little island called Utila. Most people dont know this as a big tourist destination yet, but it rivals and surpasses most better known destinations in the carribean and is now really starting to get put on the map. This isnt close to my first trip to this part of the globe, but it was sure my most memorable. A couple months ago I was able to round up a couple good friends Alex and Paul to join me on what I said would be an amazing experience of Rafting, Diving, Women, Fishing, Sun and lots of partying. Im pretty sure we got everything we expected and more. We started our journey meeting up in San Perdro Sula Honduras ... read more
I hate to say it but it looks like I might be. That is if I can get you all to help me out a little bit. So heres the deal. I have decided that I want to run the ING New York City Marathon this year after somehow getting hooked on this running stuff. You know I always used to laugh at those dudes running in there skimpy shorts with the weird hats on and its sad to say that I am now one of those dudes. Anyways. This is a goal I set awhile back after running my first half Marathon in Rochester, MN. I did halfway decent on it with little training so I though what the hell might as well go to the big show. So here I am about a ... read more
