Miraflores is a district of the Lima Province in Peru. Known for its shopping areas, gardens, flower-filled parks and beaches, it is one of the upscale districts that make up the city of Lima. So we started the day with a good breakfast, the freshly made papaya and mango juice was to die for, very very delicious. We then quickly showered, dressed and set of to explore Miraflores district on foot. We were advised to start off by exploring Larcomar the newest shopping mall in the area (we love shopping) and only two block away, towards the ocean. We went around in circles for a while - unavailble to find this large shopping mall and our map was of no help either, we decided to give up and walk over to the railing and enjoy the ... read more

We woke up early, because our flight was at 5:45. Sally was very sick, and Len wasn't feeling much better. We discussed rescheduling our flight and staying in bed another day, but we were anxious to get home. We got to the airport, bought some imodium, and got on the plane. Luckily, it wasn't full, so we had extra room where Sally could lie down. The first leg of the trip was 3 1/2 hours. We had a one hour stop in Panama City, and then another 3 1/2 hours to Orlando. Sally was getting sicker and sicker with chills and a fever. By the time we arrived in Orlando she had to be taken through customs and immigration in a wheelchair. Not a wonderful ending to an unbelieveable trip! We had hoped to go to ... read more

Loving Lima and Peru and everything that´s going on in general for this trip right now. New excellent guide, refreshing small group of 7 with no whining people, and very cool cultural stuff happening. Feeling super excited about the next three weeks and best adventures yet to come. Since I wrote I´ve had a massive cultural injection and found my dancing groove, let alone some good Afro-Peruvian music. Perfect blend of drumming African beats and salsa soul, have bought plenty of CDS to share for some loungeroom dancing on my return :) A few days ago we set off for some amazing Moche or pre-Inca Sun and Moon temples. It´s really incredible to stand on a pyramid, look at the chosen place of a civilisation at the base of a protective mountain and imagine how they ... read more

Departed from Auckland airport at 1630 hours on our flight to Lima (Peru), with a stopover in Buenos Aires. The first leg of the journey took 12 hours, with a 6 hour transit in Buenos (where we realized that no one spoke any English at all!!) We had a good laugh on the plane as we had on actually planned the trip as well as we could have. We roughly knew where we were staying on any given night. After the exhausting 6 hour transit, we started the second leg on the journey and arrived at Lima airport at 2300 hours, the journey had been about 5 hours. Managed to get some pictures on the Andes mountains while flying over Chile. Anshu collected her suitcase at the airport, only to find that the suitcase had been ... read more

Well next instalment on the travel drivvle is bound to be odd. To be fair, my idea of Peru has always focused on mountains, lushness and Machu Picchu. And for the last few days I have struggled to remember where I am. Its a mash of previous places and experiences and not at all what I expected. So thats pretty cool. Feels like Morrocan desert, Indian poverty and Asian rickshaws thrown in. After a long overnight bus from Southern Ecuador we arrived at some ungodly hour at the Peruvian border and due to the darkness along the way failed to see the change in landscape from lushness to dry coastal desert and much more poverty. We are in the Northern coastal region of Peru now, doing some killer bus hours over a few days to make ... read more

Well, I honestly don’t even know where to start. So much has happened in the past 3 days! My flight and airport time was seriously boring. I didn’t think I was going to make even the wait just to get on my first flight out of SFO. So, to liven things up I tried to get on the wrong flight. No, really, I did. The best part is that when the lady came down the line to check and make sure people were in the right line before we go to the front, all I could think was, ´who the hell gets on the wrong flight?!?´ Well, as it turns out, that would be me. I did meet Fanny, a super nice preschool teacher from Peru who now lives in Bay Point. That certainly made the ... read more
