So I am a little behind; sorry, it is my first attempt at blogging. August 20 though the 27 was my first real week in Lima. Spanish classes hadn't started yet, so it was a great time to relax (finally some down time - what I had been waiting for all summer) and familiarize myself with the city. Monday was rest-filled since we had been traveling all weekend and Tuesday Paco, a professor and author who is our father-like contact in Lima, took a few of us on a walk around the area we live in (San Isidro). He showed us lots of cafes, one of which we are now pretty addicted to. It's called San Antonio, its about three blocks from my house, and you can get a gorgeous and delicious pastry and coffee for ... read more

We arrived in Lima, Peru safely after missing the earthquake by a few hours...Felt a few tremors since then though! The journey took us 20 hours from leaving Heathrow so it was a long day. Spent the next few days exploring Lima, eating tapas and trying to learn some last minute spanish. Not much to do in Lima, bit of a strange place so after two days we are ready to leave. We head to Cuzco tomorrow, the start of the Inca Trial. ... read more

Today we were supposed to be travelling to Pisco but obviously that isn´t possible anymore. the full extent of the damage is still filtering through to us. we are all walking around in shell shock. Sally, Jo and I have been to the supermarket and bought things like bottled water, powdered milk, packet soups, cooking oil, pasta and rice and have donated them to the rescue mission. It´s quite a shock to see that almost every person in the supermarket was doing the same thing. puts the UK to shame, we didn´t see that kinda thing when the midlands flooded !!! We tried to occuply ourselves by visiting some places would not have otherwise had time to visit but all were closed due to the quake. would really like to get out of the city now, ... read more

The english version is just a little further down...

Last nite we were drinking our first ´Pisco Sour´drinks in lima when earthquake struck. we all ran out into the streets. really weird sensation quake, proper scary - didn´t see any damage or any major disruptions in Lima so continued drinking. met up with tour guide and his mate and went out on the town´drinking but most of the clubs/pubs were shut cos of quake, found one anyway and watched the news. this quake was 7.9 on the old scale. followed by several at 5ish each. last one to hit Peru was in ... read more

So our body clocks are still alittle out to say the least. Ate breakfast in our hotel - seriously struggling with our lack of spanish ha ha but met with good humour from our hosts. We took a stroll around the ´posh´ part of Lima, a district known as Miraflores. Apprently less dangerous !!! but what ever you ask for, you will always get directed to one single tourist place which is heavily manned by security and there is only 3 ways to enter - all via guarded stairs. Its a seaside place called Larco Mar where all the tourists hang out. Prices represent this and my photos of the sea are from here. You can eat take out McDonalds, Pizza Hut, KFC etc We have been checking out the local shops (for local people) WE ... read more

Another cold cloudy day in Lima. I don´t think I have seen the sky once since I have been here, only clouds. We did quite a bit of exploring the city yesterday and came to the conclusion that Lima has the feel of a Euopean city despite the fog and areas of extreme poverty. A guided tour of the city brought us around central Lima and Mira Flores. We began at El parque de amor or the park of love which was created in the image of the park in Barcelona. It was beautiful on top of a cliff overlooking the pacific. Mosaic tiled walls of poems lined the walkways and a large staue titled The Kiss was in the center. From the park we drove through the wealthy neighborhood where many of the ambasadors live. ... read more

Leaving a beautiful sun shiny day at my parents house we set off with trepidation and then promptly got stuck in some serious traffic jams on route to airport due to closure of whole M25 between two junctions. Thankfully made it with just enough time and after a tearful farewell, we boarded the plane and set old blighty firmly behind us. Bye bye A fairly uneventful flight saw us arriving at Sao Paulo airport in Brazil at about 05:30 on Saturday morning. Our flight wasn´t until 20:05 later the same day and due to passport controls, we spent 15 hours kicking around the rather dull and SMALL airport departure lounges trying (and failing) to blag our way into various VIP lounges. At first we were very well behaved and respectful, but as boredom and cabin fever ... read more

Awoke slightly later, and staff reconfirmed our flights back to the UK. We were provided with vouchers for breakfast, in a restaurant situated on the square where we had previously eaten with our tour group on another occasion. Best free hostel breakfast yet, cooked breakfast and freshly squeezed juices! We will miss the fresh pineapple and passion fruit juices! Then we prepared ourselves for our journey home. We enjoyed an early lunch at one of the local pizza restaurants, fantastic service, as we were the only ones there! After, we briefly visited the nearby Inka market, some great handmade crafts and high quality jewellery - perfect for some last minute shopping! We discovered some great little artisans on our way back towards the square. We decided to treat ourselves & enjoy some apple pie in one ... read more

After quite sometime I´m back. Sorry everyone. Between the site being down and traveling I haven´t had much time to update. There are some entrys that have been lost and I will try to recover them someday when I have time, probably back in the states. As for now I am in Lima, the grand city of Lima. Ok, actually its not that grand at all. The city is always over cast and filled with smog and the traffic is unbelievable. With this out of the way though its not really a bad city, just large and loud. We arrived here in Lima this morning around 8 am and made it to Mira Flores around 10 to start our backpacking adventure. First let me give a quick over view of the previous weekend and week to ... read more
