We appear to have very bad luck when we travel from one place to another. The bus I was about to catch after I wrote my last blog wasn´t the best. We were supposed to leave at 6pm then eventually left at 8.30pm. That wasn´t too bad but we reached the border at 12.30am due to running late and this resulted in the border between ecuador and peru being CLOSED until 4.30am. Not good, as it was supposed to be a 24hour journey which was getting longer and longer by the second. We thought to ourselves it wont be too bad as we could get some sleep on the bus until the border re-opened. Oh no, not a chance of that because we had a husband and wife with an annoying kid on board. However the ... read more

Heard horror stories from some British ladies of a certain age over breakfast this morning regarding food poisoning, gastro-enteritis, saline drips, money-changing horror stories and police corruption involving arrest, imprisonment and court appearances but, despite this, our raconteurs seemed to be enjoying themselves!... read more

Flight (after a mammoth struggle with KLM at Schipol) and arrival were fine and we expected to be confined to our hotel because of the national census. We didn't, however, do our research sufficiently well, because evidently alcohol cannot be sold or served on 20th or 21st October! Not to worry, we've got the Saturday crosswords and plenty of research reading to do... read more

After another wonderful breakfast and meager but honest conversacion with my beautiful host family, I begin a typical walk through Miraflores, Lima, to espanol school. This walk takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes depending on which lefts and rights I decide to take and provides me a healthy dose of toxic exhaust, tightly packed but beautiful homes enshrined in electric fences and a plethora of security guards dotted thoughout the city. The streets and sidewalks are swept daily, and the public grounds and parks are kept in immaculate condition. I am truly in the nicest neigborhood in a city of 8 million, and I am witnessing what happens when you have an extreme gap between rich and poor. A liikely scenario for the US in the future as our gap widens. There are parts or Miraflores ... read more

Hola de Lima! It's been crazy since July - a move to Vancouver from San Francisco, lots of cleaning/packing in Vancouver, our surprise wedding, a fun-filled, but chaotic drive down the coast, and Sarah had an emergency root canal to boot. But we have finally made our way down to Lima, where we're staying in Miraflores at the Inka Lodge, a nice, new hostel. We're rather tired from our craziness and our travels, and we're sure there's going to be plenty more. But so much awesomeness as well. Rather than listing our itinerary, we figure we can surprise you (and ourselves) with our adventures. Some observations: *Pupusas at the San Salvador airport are delicious, yet very different from those we know in San Francisco. While the flour had the same consistency of the SF ones, they ... read more

My life is starting to really settle down now; I have my daily routines, I can navigate around my house in the dark, and I am starting to recognize overplayed songs on the radio. I have moved onto the second level of my Spanish courses and am able to have basic conversations pretty easily. Besides the daily routine (which normally includes some sort of stomach pain; my stomach isn't a big fan of the Peruvian bacteria), I have gone to see a friend in a play (Bodas de Sangre), maybe half of which I understood, taken a trip to the Lima Zoo (nothing to brag about, but it was a fun afternoon), started volunteering at the largest orphanage in Lima (with the cutest kids ever), danced the night away at discotecas, headed into the mountains for ... read more

As anticipated, our move across the border from Ecuador to Peru did not result in any major observable change in surroundings or the environment. We had not heard hugely flattering reports of Lima (certainly vis a vis Arequipa and Cusco), mainly in terms of its standard of living and crime rate. Now just as we may have been unfair on Ecuador at times, due the relatively small sample we saw, maybe we are being overly fair with Lima, for the same reason, but we thoroughly enjoyed it. Mind you, we did stay in a great part of town, Miraflores, and in a nice hotel, and our main exposure to the actual city was just the touristy downtown area, so we didn’t get to see any of the “shantytowns” warned about in the brochures. Miraflores is ... read more

September 26th saw us leaving behind a cold and wet San Francisco at 6:30am, full of cold and a chest infection - a great start to South America and the Inca Trail! The flight from San Francisco to LA was a smooth 50 minutes and we flew in alongside the Hollywood sign as we descended. We had a 3 ½ hour wait in LA before our connecting LAN Peru flight to Lima. Most of that time was spent getting to the right terminal. LAX is absolutely enormous. We were expecting an old shoddy plane to get to Peru, in fact it was a brand new 767 - we had great seats with tons of leg room and the flight was really smooth 8 hours. We arrived in Lima around 1:30am, but there was no-one from GAP ... read more

So our journey comes to an end. We had a great day and night in Valipraiso, Chile. The owner of the hostal there showed us all the places to see there if we only had one day. Valipraiso is famous for´all of it´s ascensors, or elevators, that help the locals travel from the lower downtown area up the steep hill to the neighbourhoods on the cerres, or hills. They are old but still in working condition so we rode up one. We also went to LA Sebastiana, a museum of a house that was built but a Spanish man and designed by a famous Chilean poet, Pablo Naruda. The house was designed to make you feel like you are in a boat when inside. IT had amazing views of the PAcific Ocean. VAlipraiso is also famous ... read more

It is difficult to believe that Melanie and I have been here for about two months already. Melanie has lived overseas before but this is new for me. It is interesting going through the daily routines down here in Lima which usually starts with walking 20 minutes to Spanish class. I just completed the month of September spanish class but this month I am going to test to see how disciplined I can be by studying by myself. I will give it a try for about a month and see what happens. Check out the following youtube video to see what happens when I want to test out my Spanish skills on Melanie in the evening: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ngRq82c8Baw Melanie recently went on a week-long trip to Arequipa near the southern border of Peru to speak with doctors ... read more
