hi everyone, well hopefully Í´ll be able to attach some photos today. The photos take a while to load, so there are only a few. just a taste of our first ten days. So far it´s been a wonderful experience overall. We have settled into a hotel in Miraflores, Lima for the next few days, and will get practical things done like laundry and emails, before we head for the Amazon on 15 july. Everything we have been wearing is dirty and dusty from the Inca trail. Machu Picchu was stunning, nestled in the valley with mountains towering on every side. We have had some hair-raising bus rides along single lane dirt tracks up mountains, but it´s all part of the adventure. We were quite sad to part from the friends we had made on ... read more

today was an ok day i figured out what my cultural paper is going to be on. we visited a town called villa el salvador. it is a young town that was founded in 1971. it was founded by indegenious people ( about 150 families) that wanted a better place to live with more opportunities. they migrated to lima with material to build there homes. they had 4 sugarcane leaf walls and tarp to build their settlement. they were almost forced out of their area but they rioted against the police and the police ran away. today their are 70,000 in habititants with 40 schools and a town that 75% of jobs are from furniture making that is absoultely gorgeous. they sell their beautiful furniture to department stores and they put their label on it and ... read more

today was a little boring. i was absolutely exhausted in spanish class. the teacher would ask me a question and i would be like...please ask someone else i cant think this morning i just need a break! our history lecture was very interesting! we had a guest speaker that is an expert on the shining path. the shining path is a terrorist organization that got a group of people together to try and change peru through terrorism and violence. this event in history went from 1980 to 1992. abigael guzman is in jail till this day because peruvians do not believe in the death penalty. he killed over 40,000 innocent people. 75% were illiterate, indigenous people that mostly spoke quencua (not spanish: an inca language) and all of the supporters were mostly women and children and ... read more

Sadly this was to be our very last day in Lima. So we decided to go and visit the Huaca Pucllana ruins. This looked reasonably closeby on the map .... so we thought we'd catch a young walk from the hostel. Yeah right! Ended up taking us over an hour to get there ..... and much to our delight we were rewarded with a free tour of the place ..... by an actual English speaking Peruvian woman! Anshu at this point realised she had done the dumbest thing - she had hidden her money under her matress and started praying and hoping it would still be there when we got back =)) There was a museum section before the tour of the ruins and these housed, amongst other exciting things, a preseved mummy! This was the ... read more

Decided to explore and see a bit more of Lima, maybe venture into the heart of Lima, city center. We were told that it was about a 20min ride by bus. Not speaking any Spanish and virtually nobody speaking English, we thought it might be safer to catch a taxi. The cook at the backpacker volunteered to come with us to the city by bus - but we would have to wait for his shift to finish. Though we are cautious and suspicious by nature, we felt we would trust the cook to take us to the city by bus. In fact it was a good combination - as Anshu is the over suspicious and cautious one and I trust too readily =) We hung around at bit and talked to some of the other backpackers. ... read more

It´s official! Peruvians are absolute maniac drivers. This covers various kinds of transport such as trucks, buses, motorickshaws, boats and today the plane pilot has confirmed my theory once again. I nearly vomited in a small plane today as our pilot gave us spiralling, rapid views over the dry desert as we tried to see the Nasca lines. We saw them, very cool designs, supposedly created but not confirmed by ancient pre Inca Shaman people for only they know why. Unfortunately I spent half the time focussing on my lap, as did the 5 other passengers as the pilot screamed in our ears to look outside at the animal shapes. Maniac driving that was basically an hour of sky acrobatics was pretty hilarious now I think of it, but we all ended up greener for the ... read more
