Off to the "Love Park," where EVERYONE is making out, v. strange when you actually see it. I wonder if tourists in uncontrollable fits of giggles ever puts them off- I suppose they get used to it. Not that we were laughing in their face but the concept is simply so strange. Great photo opportunity. Watch the Champions League semi in the presence of none other than "Hector Chumpitaz." Who? Well thats what we said when he was mobbed. After he left we discover he is Peru´s version of Pele and one of SA´s all time greats!! Of course. Opportunity missed! Especially as he was signing shirts. We then catch the May Day celebrations in the main plaza all music and dance. Then something cultural: the church housing the tomb of the 1st black saint and ... read more

So today is our last day and we will be spending it in Lima, the city that many told us was only full of crime, pollution and traffic. What we have found is many people looking out for us, a beautiful city center, an amazingly cheap and wonderful hostel in an old colonial house and yes traffic and security issues the same as any city in the USA. One more day and then it is back to having no excuse for not understanding what people are saying, hot summer weather, George Bush as president (we have met no one who likes him here) and school and work. On one good note, the new president in Peru Alan Garcia wants to renegotiate the Free Trade agreement being considered with the USA.... read more

We did not get to spend much time in Lima, just a day's layover. So we took a taxi right from airport and went to see a museum, and then just hunted for food before returning to Airport. Finding vegetarian food, while easy in Cusco, was definately a concern in Lima. We were there for just a day, and it was really hard to find vegetarian food. Not even plain rice, apparantly they all make their rice con pollo, chicken. We roamed a lot in the main square, half of the places were closed too. Then spotted a hare-rama hare-krishna group chanting away in middle of the road. I had a very overwhelming urge to go and ask them where can we get vegetarian food! But I did not, I was sure I am going to ... read more

After so many alterations of plan, we finally made a decision to travel on New Year's Day! 48 hours of traveling by land, with a measly amount of money... I'm proud to say, I MADE IT!!! A year back, I couldn't imagine myself traveling alone by bus even in my own country. Such gutsiness caused a bit of hysteria from my family members, and respect from friends... To note, this is also my first time to travel with a Colombian which laxity almost drove me nuts. A couple of days before the travel, neither one of us had concrete step-by-step plan. When asked, Julieta would simply say 'Relax, everything will just be fine!´ I was doubtful and were crossing my fingers...but then again, she was right, everything turned out right!!! ... read more

It seems the best cure for walkers who have completed the Salkantay or Inca trails is to party hard when you get off the train back in Cusco, and who am I to argue with this tried and true remedy. As such I went out to Mama Africas that night with the hostel crowd for much therapeutic drinking and dancing all night. I booked on an overnight bus trip the next day south west to Arequipa with two English girls who had become travel friends. At this stage of my trip, there are some travellers I've bumped into four or five times on the gringo trail. It really is very social and a lot of fun on the trail in South America, but you do need to be constantly vigilant looking after your possessions. The bus ... read more
