Lima´s mass transit is about as different from San Francisco´s as you can get. From the airport we took a minibus to Miraflores where the Sisters of Mercy own a house. These buses are owned by a private business and leased out to local people. A team of 2 guys will rent the bus (usually an old Toyota with seats for about 10, made in the 70s or 80s) for about S./30 per day. One person drives while the other hangs out the slide door, shouting at pedestrians to ask if they want to get on. He also collects the money (S./ 1 for a short journey, 2 for longer). They drive along prescribed routes (there are people who sit on street corners all day counting buses to monitor the performance) throughout the day, trying to ... read more

Well the bags are nearly packed, Oliver & I have had every injection known to man, (and more besides,) the malaria tablets, passports, currency, flight tickets and accomodation vouchers for the first two nights have been checked. We fly KLM from Norwich International at 06:15 GMT on 28 June, to pick up a connecting flight in Amsterdam. After a two hour stopover we board a further 13hr+ KLM flight non-stop to Lima. Our accomodation has been pre-booked by GAPadventures at Stefanos Hotel in the Lima suburb of Miraflores. Thanks once again to my fabulous wife Lorraine for her encouragement & support! ... read more

We are in Lima, Peru! Can't believe it! We are leaving for Cusco tomorrow so we are having a mellow evening here at the Loki Hostal. A really nice hostal, with lots of cool travelers, right in the center of Miraflores, which is the nice part of Lima. We went to a fantastic outdoor mall, right on the cliffs above the ocean. LA is smoggy, but it would feel like fresh air compared to here... crazy buses with people jumping on and off without it stopping, playing frogger everytime we cross the street, and dodging through the gauntlet of people trying to entice you into their restaurant. Not much to report other than that...we are really looking forward to Cusco, we hear its really cool, well cold I guess I should say. ... read more

...and it had only just begun! Big news in the world of Lizzie and Spud - Mark has arrived! Yay! It is fun to have an addition to the group, and such a welcome one at that (Faye almost peed with excitement before his flight got in yesterday)! Having spent the day wandering around central Lima, we are all travelling to Ayacucho tomorrow on an overnight bus, and from there, who knows?! Heading towards Cusco, ultimately...and anyone who read my last entry can guess how ridiculously happy I am about THAT! Much has occurred since I last wrote; Faye and I set off from Cusco to Arequipa, which was a minor disappointment as we had been told such wonderful things about it, but in comparison to where we had just been, it was a let down! ... read more

Well... Im back to normal...I use the word normal loosely... Heres the link to pictures: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=30946&id=705205031 http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=31056&id=705205031 http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=31064&id=705205031 Britt left about half an hour ago, so Im on my own again now, its hard to say goodbye but I will see her in....26 days We had alot of fun together, since I last updated... Day 5: We woke up early for the Sacred Valley tour, which is a very popular tourist trip here, but was very interesting. The ruins we saw were very cool, amazing what the Incas could do back then, the technology they developed was pretty impressive. Britt and I both agreed we could have never done any of the things they did with what little they had. We got home late from that and had a nice dinner. Day 6: Spent half the ... read more

USD40 for a 15minutes thrill compared to USD120 for a full package trekking in Huaraz is relatively luxurious, but what the hell - Im getting older and before I get more chicken shit I should do it now!!! It is just beside Parque del Amour, where the spot for paragliding is, and as told by the guide right now is the best timing for paragliding. The guide was flying with me as the pilot to control the parafoil where I basically just sit at the harness and enjoying the view. Not as scary as I’ve thought - was terrified at the moment of takeoff - jumping off the cliff, but after a few seconds have got used to it especially when the guide told me to let my hand go and start taking photos - and ... read more

We touched down in Lima Airport at about lunch time and we were both shocked at the contrast between here and Brazil / Argentina. At last it felt as though we really were in the depths of SA! Although Lima is the capital of Peru it was very under developed compared to Rio and BA. We hopped in our taxi and feared for our lives.....the driving was mental. They don't like to use their breaks, they'd prefer to use their horns!!! Seems to work mind you! haha. We stayed in the Mirofloures area of the city which is where all the hostels are. We hadn't booked in anywhere and couldn't get into our first choice hostel but wondered down the road and managed to get into a place called "The Flying Dog". It was briliant! ... read more

I think one of the main reasons why we were looking forward to Lima was being back at sea level again, and thus, hopefully, feeling a bit warmer! Alas, we'd been warned that there would be too much fog. And so the story would be. Also, the suggestion was made to stay in Miraflores, the "ritzier" tourist part of Lima, in the Inka Hostal. I think neither we would recommend to anyone, unless you like concrete, shopping malls, and have industrial strength ear plugs. But anyways, it's still the nation's capital, and there were things to be seen. So we made a management summary, and made sure we did it all ASAP! So day one we got organised, and morning day 2 we got picked up for a half day city tour, yes, another one. Not ... read more

After a series of almost catastrophic events including lost train tickets, wrong train time and inaccessible airport terminal we did finally arrive in Lima. We managed to meet up and get into our taxi, well we think it was ours as the name was Helena Moran! Our new travel nick name! Our hostel in Lima is swish, they even make the beds! We were woken by some crazy drumming teenagers advertising Cristal beer, the national beer or Peru. Good welcome to Lima! We spent the first day wandering around Miraflores, a suburb next to the Pacific. By far the best bit was the HUGE craft market selling classic peruvian jumpers, hats, socks, bags, jewellry, gloves, rugs, blankets, purses and much much more! So we mainly shopped! Probably not the best plan as we have to ... read more
