Mi casa
My house in Lima! My room is the one on the second floor with the balcony. So I am a little behind; sorry, it is my first attempt at blogging.
August 20 though the 27 was my first real week in Lima. Spanish classes hadn't started yet, so it was a great time to relax (finally some down time - what I had been waiting for all summer) and familiarize myself with the city. Monday was rest-filled since we had been traveling all weekend and Tuesday Paco, a professor and author who is our father-like contact in Lima, took a few of us on a walk around the area we live in (San Isidro). He showed us lots of cafes, one of which we are now pretty addicted to. It's called San Antonio, its about three blocks from my house, and you can get a gorgeous and delicious pastry and coffee for about US$2-3.
Wednesday the four of us not yet in classes took a walk along the beach (about 4 blocks from my house) and wandered around Miraflores, a really desirable and popular area of Lima. At night Paco and the seven students from UVa went to a restaurant in Barranco, a nightlife hotspot, to eat anticuchos and picarones. What is that? Anticuchos are
La playa y la mar
The ocean!! At a park about 6 blocks from my house. kebabs of the meat from a cow's heart; a little weird to think about but absolutely delicious!! Picarones are peruvian doughnuts that are made with flour and sweet potato powder and smothered honey, mmmmm.
Over the weekend, we went out with some friends from the university we are studying at and went to see a play, Pinocho, a Spanish take on Pinocchio, that another new friend was starring in. It was a really cute play and since it was made for kids, I understood maybe 75% of it. After the play we went out for ice cream. Even though its really cold outside ice cream is everywhere and all of it is delicious and freshly made. I really like Peruvian food, in case you can't tell.
We had been trying to plan a trip to Cuzco and Machu Picchu, a new world wonder. After unsuccessful attempts at trying to get train tickets, we gave up. On Monday afternoon, however, we got a call from the travel agent that UVa uses saying he got reservations for the planes, trains, tours, and hotels. We ran to his office to pick up the paperwork at 6pm, ran home to pack, and
Mis amigos
Some friends from UVa headed to the airport at 3am that morning!
