We thoroughly enjoyed our sojourn in Lima, especially the last few days exploring the avenues of Miraflores on the coast. Much of our time is spent being active, which is great, but we also need time out to rest up, recover from jetlag and more importantly reflect on our time in a different place. This is one way in which it differs to a fortnights holiday. We also agree with our friend Michael ( working a year in St Helens) that time is quite a miraculous concept in that our time away has flown by and yet seems a long time. A long time away from friends and family and now that it is less than 4 weeks we are increasingly getting excited about our return. We hope for a warm and sunny summer ahead, as ... read more

Saqsaywaman: The remains and fondations of a colossal strucuture, featuring three-tiered defense walls made of stones fitting with razorsharp precision. /it means /saatiaite /falcon and was built in some 77 years (1431-1508) under the ruke of incas Tupac Yupanki and Wayna Qhapaq. Then the Spaniards use the stone to build their own-house and churches, and a Cathedral. The largest stone weight about 70 tons! Very nice view over Cuzco.... read more

If you're looking for Ayahuasca in Cusco, you're bound to find a Shaman offering the service on every second street corner. I came across many, but was impressed by Etnika's professionalism and particularly the warm welcome I received when I inquired. I did a 2 night/3 day Ayahuasca ceremony which I can highly recommend. I found the Ayahuasca Shaman, Jesus, truly amazing, a really wonderful, warm person who guided me through an intensive and healing journey, along with Teddy our translator, who I can't thank enough for taking care of me during the process. We stayed at a great retreat in the mountains, which was very comfortable and offered wonderful food, transportation and schedules were timely. Everything was very organised. Thanks Etnika's! url=http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g294314-d2459571-Reviews-Etnika_s_Shamanic_Healing_Centre-Cusco_Cusco... read more

28/03 to 04/04/13 - Cuzco: Nice town, lots of churches, and paved streets. The main attractions are around Cuzco is to visit the as it is full of Inca sites like Saqsaywaman and not only the Machu Picchu. Lots of museums offer information on the folklore culture, art of the region (boleto turistico costs 130 PEN valid for 10 days). The ticket will allow you to visit archaeological sites and city museums. It is Worth it if you got time. We did the Museum of contemporary art: paintings and ceramic arts from renowned Peruvian of the 20th and 21th century and the Museum of Popular art: Belongs to the American Institute of Art and exhibits sculptures,ceramics..of contemporary Cusco Craftsmen. Finally the Museum qorikancha is interesting for the momies.... read more

Before I start I must admit I was in no condition to do the Inca Trail. If I had known how arduous a task it was, I would have never even considered attempting it. Well I did not know it and sometimes ignorance is a blessing. To compound the problem it was almost a personal trek and the only other person in it was a Canadian student of Russian parents who was fit as a fiddle.Having said that Alexander was very understanding and encouraged me a lot to go on. We were picked up from the hotels 0430hrs, transported by bus, in two hours, to Olaytantambo from where we boarded a train to KM104 where the train stopped (in an hour and a half) to let us out to begin our trek. There was no station ... read more

Cusco and the Sacred Valley. I had often wondered why there was no major conflicts in the Andean countries between the Spanish descendents and the indigenous population in spite of the fact that the former had intellectual supermacy and occupied top echelons of society, the latter forming the lower rungs of society. My Cuzco tour guide gave me an insight into why this is so. She was very passionate about her Inca heritage hated what the Spanish for what they had done to her (may be stupid) forefathers and their heritage, but she could not deny her staunch Catholic beliefs the spread of which was the main reason given for the distructioin of their Inca Culture. Like the ideotic Muslim zealots of Bhoomiyan, distruction of ancient statues of Buddha in Afghanistan, and Timbuktu recently the Spanish ... read more

Here I am in Cusco, all on my lonesome. Ben went off to do the Inca Trail on Monday and gets back tomorrow tea time. It's the first time we've spent a day apart in five months so it feels very strange and I feel like I'm at a bit of a loose end! I don't know what to do with myself! I'm missing him! We both agreed that it was best for me not to do it because of the trouble I've been having with my knees. It would have just spoilt it for us both. I'm gutted but it's not so bad because I did the Inca Trail seven years ago so doing it again was just greedy really!! That leaves me in charge of both the blog and the photos so I best ... read more

No, the title has nothing to do with a movie from the early 90’s, nor does it have anything to do with illegal substances (or even some of the legal ones I have been known to enjoy). No, today it is about lack of sleep, layovers and altitude. In my mind I had visions of a slow night at work the night before I left. I would slip out, go home and quietly unwind before the alarm went off at 4:30 AM. Perhaps I should have included winning the lottery in that scenario because it wouldn’t have happened either. But here I am in Cusco, Peru, so all is well. At over 11,000 feet elevation, altitude sickness can be an issue here. I started taking Diamox on Sunday to help prevent this and actually felt pretty ... read more

We have completed our first SA long bus ride - we got on the bus at 2pm and 21 hours later arrived into Cusco. We were very, very thankful to have paid a little more for some luxory to ease into the travel style! The bus itself was the 'suite' and was filled with tourists only, I guess as it was expensive - although $65 for a 21 hour bus including recliner seats, in-built videos, meals and toilets didn't really seem that ridiculous. It was my turn for the Man Flu this time - which has been made alot worse by the altitude of Cusco being 3,400 my head has felt like it is going to burst the past 2 days, walking around always short of breathe this Inca Trek is looking harder by the minute! ... read more

Our arrival in Cusco certainly meant we were going to visit the famous Inka city of Machu Pichu. But, we had heard from many people that you need to book up the fabled “Inka Trail” many months in advance to have a chance of getting one of the restricted number of places. What we hadn't reckoned on is that turning up in the middle of rainy season in late January, demand for the Inka trail does actually drop off, and one of the most reputable agencies, Llama Path, offered Chris, Andrew and I a spot on their trip. I had declined the use (and cost!) of a porter, so I was testing myself by carrying all my stuff (except the tent and cooking equipment which were taken by the porters) throughout the four days. One of ... read more
