Day 14: Friday, August 24th, 2012 This morning we said goodbye to the Intrepid group at Hostel Buena Vista and headed off the other hostel where we were staying that night in Cusco, Hostel Pascana (our original hostel in Cusco). Then we headed off on a city bus (which is basically a van, they leave when the van is full) to Pisac to go and explore the inca ruins. When we got to Pisac, we met a couple from the Netherlands, and we took a taxi together up to the Pisac ruins. Renata and I estimated that the ruins would take about half a hour to explore. Were we ever so wrong. The Pisac ruins are enormous. It seemed like we were walking forever, trying to find the exit. It took us about 2 hours to ... read more

Day 8: Saturday, August 18th, 2012 Today is the official start day of our Intrepid Inca Trail Express tour. We started the tour at a different hostal because apparently the hostal that we were staying at was overbooked. At the last minute they must have changed hostals again because the hostal on the vouchers they gave us was incorrect. We finally ended up in the right hostal after contemplating whether we had a place to stay and two taxi cab rides later. I did not understand why Intrepid could not inform us before hand that they changed hostals, instead of us making an unnecessary stop which cost us an extra 5 soles. They were pretty disorganized and I was not impressed. At the Hostal Buenovista, we met Fernando, our tour guide and the rest of the ... read more

Day 6: Thursday, August 16th, 2012- Puerto Maldonado to Cusco After a 2 hour boat ride plus drive to the Puerto Maldonado airport we boarded our flight to Cusco. When we arrived in Cusco, we booked a tour to see Moray, Maras and the Salt mines for the day after. We were a little nervous at the airport, because we could not find our prepaid transfer to our hostal (Pascana). After trying to call Intrepid, we finally located our taxi driver. We stayed at the hostal Pascana, located around the Corichanca area. It was a really nice hostal and the staff were exceptional. They would bring your bags to your room and book tours for you. In Cusco, I started to get attitude sickness and I was getting a massive headache. Although I took my attitute ... read more

Hi All, Been in Cuzco for a week can't believe how quickly time is going its almost time for me to pack up and fly back to Lima to start my G Adventures tour. I arrived at 9am last friday after getting up very early for my flight and made it to the girls orphange. There are 13 girls of various ages all with different stories as to why they are there. Its the school holidays here so the girls have the days free. They love to sing and dance the youngest girl is 4 and the oldest 17. Their are lots of volunteers ranging from 17 - 40 in age, they are all lovely and have made me feel very welcome and at ease for the rest of my trip. The weather here is crazy ... read more

Before heading off on the Inca Trail, we spent three relaxing days exploring the town of Cusco and acclimatising to the altitude. Cusco is very similar to Arequipa with its main plaza surrounded by cathedrals, restaurants and shops, but it has its own distinct style with a mix of the Incas and Spanish. We enjoyed exploring the narrow and often steep streets which we used not only to gain the best vantage points for views of the city but also as training for the upcoming trek. We were a little concerned at this stage as we were very puffed and our hearts racing by the time we reached the top of one of these streets. On the first day, we happened to stumbled accross a military parade in the main square and throughout our stay we ... read more

On the TACA flight from Lima to Cusco, I (Greg) pondered why I ended up with this wanderlust. Perhaps spurred on by the impending completion of another of my bucket list entries (Machu Pichu, after Galapagos) I thought about those things prior to entering university that really whetted my appetite: once uni started there were a hundred things. I came up with three things that my parents provided: the Time/Life series on countries; Sir Francis Chichester’s book on circumnavigation; and repeated entreats to “see the world before settling down”. Catherine remembered her Father always encouraging her brothers and sisters to look for what is “just over the hill” rather than sticking on the main road. The flight was packed with tourists. Many – probably most – were significantly younger than we four. We flew past a ... read more

Cusco is as pretty a town as any that South America has to offer. Situated in the Sacred Valley it’s the gateway to the world famous wonder Machu Picchu, and is surrounded by green, rolling hills. From the main Square of Plaza de Armas you stand upon ancient cobbled stones amidst colonial era churches for which the boulders were pilfered long ago, from even further back Inca placed stones. In Cusco, you have a real sense of place... and what a place! What a place! But there is more to be found in Cusco than Inca adventures. Home to the “World’s Highest, Irish run, Irish Pub” Paddy’s, which forges within some delicious Irish pub-grub; cottage pies, mash potatoes, gravy... (oh how our Northern tums have yearned!) Want Vegan food? Then take the advice of “The Road ... read more

Hi Everyone, Well I have made it to Cusco and the girls orphange, after 3 flights and some interesting taxis rides. Cusco is beautiful it is really warm in the sun and cold in the shade I haven´t explored much at the moment but looking forward to walking round the old inca buildings. The orphange has 14 girls of all different ages they are on scholl holidays at the moments so just playing games and keeping them entertained. The other volunteers are lovely, really friendly so have made me feel very welcome. Some of them hae been to the areas I´m visiting on my trek and it sounds amazing. only a short on today as I have no photos and not much has happened yet. xxx... read more

Day 289 Thursday 26th July As soon as we boarded we knew this was going to be a bad ride. I know we are very precious about our space and the conditions on a bus but it is annoying having someone’s scalp in your lap. The people in front had their seat fully reclined when we boarded and had to struggle into our seat and left it that way even when we were served dinner. We know they have every right to do it but we guess that we would expect them to have a certain level of courtesy…I guess we are just too old fashion. Soon after leaving Nazca we were served a tiny and fairly unappealing feed and the bus was heading up into the mountains. The trip was windy and slow with it ... read more

Now that i'm with Sofia (hooray!) we often lament about the price difference between here and Asia - I have been pissing money away. Not that I regret splashing out a few more soles on trying cerviche the other day- it was a bloody bargain away for the huge pile of seafood i got, but i maybe regret a little staying in such fancy expensive hostels, and getting fleeced by every taxi driver I come across. Well no more! We are feeling poor and have pledged to do better. The poverty may have been inspired by splashing out On a more expensive (well, mid-range) Salkantay trek... But you know what, I don't like being cold and i want a blow up mattress damn it! And an energency horse. I really really wanted an emergency horse included ... read more
