we arrived back in Cusco in the evening and bid farewell to Harry and Richard who were on their way to Arequipa and Puno. I quite fancied to sample some street food and a black market so Ali and i headed to the poorer area of the city. There were mass celebrations going on in the centre but as we passed though the crowd and into the next district of the city, the number of foreigners dissipated and i was just in the company of the locals. As we entered the market area, there was a cart selling meat kebabs, i indicated that i would like one that looked like beef and topped with a potato and smothered it in chilli sauce. On the first bite it didn't taste like dog so i continued. It was ... read more

Very late waking up after the night before, i wandered out of the hotel into the hot lunchtime sun for some breakfast, a huge bowl of fruit salad and some sugar puff like stuff with yoghurt...yum!! Harry, Richard, Donald and I decided that we would go quad biking for the afternoon. Probably not the wisest thing to do after a night out..... but we wouldn't be on the public road....so we thought!!! we got a taxi to an industrial site and where introduced to the death machines!! I clambered on the bike and learnt how it worked. I think it was fair to say i was bricking it just riding around the yard but then the guide jumped on his bike and headed for the main road..... he stopped briefly to warn us about the rapid ... read more

So it's fair to say we celebrated and we celebrated well. Ali, our host for the whole tour, took us out to the local bars in Cusco. At dinner we dined on Alpaca, drunk very good Chilean wine, tasted some suspect Peruvian wine and had a lot of Pisco Sours!! Then we hit the clubs and the rum and cokes started flowing, we introduced Ali to the 'Jaeger Bomb' which he thought was crazy! I was grabbed by a 'local' who taught me some salsa..... he kept shouting 'let me lead you'.... 'where?' i thought, then realised he was talking dance, they take their salsa very seriously and are not amused when you ask for nachos on the side!!!! I think i did ok despite my rum consumption. The pop tunes started pumping and we all ... read more

I arrived in Cuzco, and in spite of the worries; and maybe from the medication I'm taking for it, I don't have altitude sickness. Whoops, the hotel has earplugs on the nightstand. I here there's a disco next door.... read more

October 2, 2012 After my first bed in four days and arguably my best sleep in a while it was time to get out and explore the mighty Cusco...had a taste of it the week before as we transited between Puno and the Sacred Valley, but now I had three solid days to poke around, relax and wind up this fantastic adventure... Awesome place: Great narrow cobblestone streets surrounding the Plaza de Armas, beautiful churches and museums, with fun pubs, shops and restaurants thrown in for good measure! Hectic enough pace at pretty much anytime of the day but the vibe to me was relaxed, absolutely loved it...hawkers aplenty, but again not a hard sell and a simple "no, gracias" would end the encounter, no worries... The gang pretty much split up for the day, and ... read more

Long story.

For the past couple of weeks we have been traveling with Oasis Overland and our tour leader Ricardo. We have seen so many sights and have had an amazing journey, but our tour and time in Peru is coming to an end. We had two days in Cuzco to rest the body and chill out with a bit of market shopping after completing the Inca Trail and 24 hour challenge. Cuzco is a great place to bargain because there are so many stalls selling similar or exactly the same items. Our mission was to bargain as much as we could and in most places it worked. Don’t feel bad for bargaining, in most places they expect it. Whilst in Cuzco, a local food on the menu to try is Guinea Pig. A very salty meat that ... read more

So, we went straight from Santa Cruz to Copacabana on the shores of Lake Titicaca for a few days R&R before crossing into Peru. Not the most exciting of places, but a great chance to witness the Pachamaman hypocrisy first hand. Pachamama is like a super-deity, the Andean mother earth crossed with the virgin Mary (the conquering Spanish just kind of amalgamated all this shit), who the Bolivianos pay respect to.. by smashing their rubbish all over the parish. Walk 10 mins out of Copa and there is a kind of market, which presumably sells bottles of stuff just so people can hoy it against the rocks. A large mound of broken glass rises out of the Lake, out of which most locals fish. This is Bolivia all over though, generally locals spill a little of ... read more

Español / Català Lima is at sea level. Cuzco is not. It’s more than eleven thousand feet above. The consequence, arriving to the second one on a direct flight between both cities, is to have nearly guaranteed to get soroche, the altitude sickness. It’s recommended, at least in the first hours from arrival, not to stress too much, eat sparingly, drink in moderation and, if possible, not smoking. No way. We’ve got a lavish meal tasting also cuí, a halfway rabbit and guinea pig local rodent, washed down with a couple of bottles of red wine, and more than enough cigarettes besides the coffees. Only suffered sorochethe one who took care about recommendations. A kind of contradictory local curse. A perverse evil of Mo... read more
