Short flight from Lima and here we are in Cusco. This is only my third visit here, first one in 2002, second one in 2006. The past two times it was Cusco and Matchu Pichu for me, but this time it would be way more. My only real issue was to find out how Tiffany and Leslie would react to an altitude of 3400 meters. Altitude sickness is not something to take lightly in Cusco. At the same time, Tiffany and Leslie have both skied well above the 3000 meters mark without any issues. My last two visits in Cusco, we never splurged on accommodation…and I wasn’t going to splurge on the Monestario this time either. I found a nice deal at the Novotel…reading the reviews I was expecting a small room and average stay…how wrong ... read more

Cuzco was alot nicer than we thought it was going to be. Gorgeous old buildings, beautiful old plaza and garden areas. We did a walking tour out if the Lonely Planet guide which was food but bloody hot. It took us up to a lookout point which had a view of the whole city. Cuzco is the largest and oldest city in Peru. There are ALOT of dogs around, and occasionally smell urine. There are water channels running down some streets and then later saw a guy peeing in one of them (so the smell was explained). One thing we were surprised with was the number of bakeries. Exquisite pastries, cakes, and slices set up on stunning window displays. Looked very out of place. Walking around the city was great. Got to see the locals and ... read more

As I poke my head in and out of places around this lovely world, I figured it would be nice to document some of my experiences so 1.) I can look back on them when I'm older and finally capable of growing a somewhat normal looking beard and reminisce and 2.) so those of you who feel like following my endeavors can indulge (instead of actually working while at the office...slackers =). To give everyone an idea of where my travels will take me, please look at the map provided above; look at it dammit!...it took me a solid 13-14 minutes to figure it out and I'm not one to waste time. Kisses! MP... read more

I'm now nearing the end of my first of 2 weeks of Spanish lessons in Cusco. It's been a surprisingly enjoyable experience, if somewhat tiring. I don't think I fully estimated how tiring 6 hours a day of learning a language could be. Its definitely worth it however as my Spanish has gone from being non-existent to being at a level where I can order food & drink without pointing, unsuccessfully barter in shops and describe celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Shakira to my teachers in Spanish. This is something they find particularly annoying when the exercise is to tell them in Spanish where I live or what my hobbies are. The school has a great atmosphere with lots of different nationalities who all seem to get on really well. We ended ... read more

Taking a lunchtime flight from Lima to Cuzco I began to appreciate what a difference a few thousand meters can make at the same latitude. Leaving behind the hot, dusty, arid and rocky terrain of Lima it wasn't long before we entered the Andes to be engulfed by bright green hills and mountainsides contrasted only by the odd snow capped peak, lake or river. At 3500m the former Inca capital Cuzco is much fresher and cooler than the coast and obviously with the air being considerably thinner the altitude can take some getting used to. Having good fitness at present and being off the scale on a recent peak flow test I foolishly didn't think the altitude would be an issue so I dropped my bag off at my accommodation and headed off for the ... read more

We do need to report first for today’s start, that we did, indeed, conduct the scientific experiment with which way the water drains in the Southern Hemisphere, and yes, it does drain in the opposite direction! Job one today was to purchase Carol an Alpaca sweater, and complete our TUPAS purchases for the trip home, as our free time is getting limited. So we get to the front door to leave the hotel and are warmly greeted by (what we can only assume is) “The Bouncer.” This big dude, complete with a broken nose and Mafia suit, is right out of a God Father movie! Cuzco is sort of still a wild-west city and we have been warned many times about thievery, pick pockets and to leave the good cameras out of site. Most stores have ... read more

Well who would of believed time goes by so fast. I have been here for 11 weeks. I only have 3 weeksleft before the end of my Cusco journey. I am having very mixedfeelings about it. In one hand I am ready to leave and start a newadventure, but I will be sad to go, I keep thinking of stuff I stillwant to do and places I want to see. I guess you are always going toget that wherever you go. The house is a little strange at the... read more

Well, we spent a nice few days in the beautiful, crowded and scenic city of Arequipa. The cabs seem to outnumber the people and they are absolutely flippin´crazy when it comes to spontaneous lane changing, ingnoring stop signs, incessant honking and completely ingnoring pedestrians. They have the right of way and that´s just a fact jack! We just got back from a 4 day jaunt into Colca Canyon and actually got to see a number of Andean Condors, but not at the famed Cruz del Condor vista area where the tour buses and minivans drop hundreds of tourons each day. Hell no, that place was shrouded in mist. Well actaully we took the locals bus up there from our hotel in Cabanaconde along with the farmer, their shovels, and the numerous local gals and their wares ... read more

We spent the first couple of weeks together in Cusco after Ron finally got his act together and flew in on 11/11/12. Demi had found a lovley little hotel overlooking the entire San Blas district of Cusco. It was a little bit of a hike to get up there but well worth the effort. Our first week was spent touring around the city and nearby Incan ruins of Saccaywaman (sexy woman for short), Tambomachay, Puca pucara and Quenca--all spelling is from memeory. In the evenings we took spanish lessons and enjoyed the local music and food scene. Even found time to catch a football game at a local Irish sports bar. Demi had already had a round of sickness and I had my time shortly after necessitating a wonderfull 5 day course of Cipro (thank you ... read more

The quick update for those who prefer :) I finished my TEFL course at the end of October, then went wwoofing in the jungle for a while, yesterday I got back from hiking the Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu and tomorrow I´m off to Trujillo in northern Peru to teach English - it´s all happening!
