19 Aug Day 7: Puno - Cusco We were picked up at 6:30 this morning and taken to a coach for the trip to Cusco, arriving at 5:00 pm on the dot. We were told when we got on the coach it would 5:00 pm. Liz was clock watching and picked up the fact that it was exactly on time. It was just as well we had some-one who knew what they were doing in the driver who picked us up and dropped us at the bus station. He got all the right stamps and so on added to the tickets. From there it was off to Cusco the ancient Inca capital. This is one of the most spectacular road journeys in the world as we travelled right along the spine of the Andes and is ... read more

Hola chicas and chicos! Tomorrow we are off onto the Salkantay Trek And we're pretty excited/nervous. We had a thorough briefing last night by our guides. They informed us about all the sights we will be visiting along the way and the amount of walking we will be doing, which is a lot! On Monday we began our Spanish lessons with our teacher, Roxanna, she is lovely and really helping us bring words together To form sentences. On Tuesday we were picked up at 9am by our organiser, Pablo, from the mundo verde scheme. he took us to the local government hospital which is just off the main square, Plaza de Armas. There, we were taken into the dental clinic which is a small room consisting of 2 dental chairs, one for extractions and the other ... read more

So after 23 hours of travelling, we have finally arrived in Cusco! It has been an extremely exciting journey where we've bumped into lots of interesting travellers! We met a lovely Peruvian family in Lima and they were giving us facts about Peru and lake titicacca. The view from the plane between Lima and cusco was beautiful and it included the snow capped mountains and valleys. When we landed in cusco, Saadia and I were picked up by Betty from Mundo Verde. The driver and Betty were amazed by the fact that we were Asians from England! They expressed their love for bollywood movies and Shah Rukh Khan! We are staying in a lovely hostel with very friendly staff and the view from our window is incredible! We've been around the town and had a lovely ... read more

Cusco was the historic capital of the Inca empire and became the centre for the Spanish colonisation of the Andes when it was captured in the 1530s. The city centre features some impressive colonial and Inca architecture, such as the Spanish-built churches in the Plaza de Armas and the Stone of Twelve Angles in San Blas, which forms part of an Inca-built wall and is an example of the precise way in which the Inca carved stones such that they fitted together without the need for an adhesive. Inca walls were so well-built in fact that many have survived earthquakes which destroyed colonial buildings. In addition to its beauty, Cusco is the closest city to Machu Picchu and as such it is very touristy. The downside of this is that you are constantly hassled to eat ... read more

Jetzt gibt Essen. Drum Adios y hasta pronto. Besos... read more

Cusco is the oldest continuously inhabited city in South America and was the capital of the Incan Empire. It was a wonderful surprise. We didn´t know what to expect but it was a beautiful city full of wonderful architecture, churches, museums, plazas, fountains, narrow cobbled streets, inca ruins, and fabulous restaurants. We spent a bit of time here after Machu Pichu (about 10 days) just deciding where to go next (hard life I know!) and making the most of the fabulous restaurants and bakeries. We ate cake every day! Modern day Cusco is built on, and surrounded by many Inca ruins. One of the sites that we visited was the monestery of Santo Domingo which was built ontop of the old incan sun and moon temples. Some of the original Incan stone walls remain and have ... read more

The bus from Puno to Cusco was 7 hours, a lovely ride through lush green valleys following winding rivers along the way. We had two days to orientate ourselves and confirm our bus-train and entry tickets for Machu Pichu. It was a 1 3/4 hour bus ride to the train station to catch the 2 hour train to Aguas Calientes. The journey was beautiful and we booked the train with windows in the roof so you can fully appreciate the scenery. The vegetation changed to more lush and tropical as the altitude lowered following the river Vilcanota. This is the region where the Andean spectacled Bear lives, no bear sightings but we saw so many orchids, over 250 different varieties can be found in the Machu Pichu valleys. Aguas Calientes was once a tiny village consisting ... read more
