Awaking the next morning after our long, long journey and collapsing into bed, we were amazed to see how wonderful the hotel in Ariquipa was. We were staying in a converted Bishop´s House with little court yards, beautifully tended gardens, rooms with antique furnishings and all sorts of intriguing artifacts decorating the hotel. It very much reminded me of the Heritage Hotels I´d stayed in when I was travelling in India. A picture paints a thousand words so you´ll have to wait until I get a chance to upload some photos. We set off with Max into Ariquipa, first to have a look around a local indoor market. Normally I would have found this fascinating, but in my rather fragile state the sight and smell of minging, raw animal parts covered in flies wasn´t exactly appealing! ... read more

The Santa Catalina de Siena Convent is an important landmark in Arequipa. Known as 'the city within a city' it is a large complex, closed off from the city by high walls. It was founded in 1579, less than 40 years after the Spanish arrived in Arequipa. The founder of the monastery was a rich widow, Maria de Guzman. Since the tradition of the time was that the second daughter in a family should enter religious service the nuns were typically young girls from wealthy Spanish families. The parents of these girls paid a dowry for their daughters, much as they would if the girls were to be married. These dowries could be up to 2,400 silver coins and the nuns were also required to bring 25 listed items, including a statue, a painting, a lamp ... read more

Note to self: Before landing in new countries do look up local greeting customs. Bestowing too many kisses on one's new boss is an interesting first impression to make...... I am in Arequipa! Three days of travelling, overnighting in Amsterdam and then Lima I finally arrived in my new home. I stepped out of the tiny airport to the gloomy world outside and was greeted by three figures huddling around a small placard bearing my name. The welcome party certainly gave me an easier start than I had in Mexico, my embarrassing blunder aside. I was shown to my new school and from there my new home whereupon left to my own devices I began to decorate with slightly battered pictures and photos which have now adorned the walls of three homes on three continents!

Hola! We sped out of Puno faster than the Millenium Falcon and headed to the city of Arequipa. The city has a lot of old Spanish colonial buildings and is situated in the shadow of three mighty volcanoes. We also dropped a couple of kilometres in elevation so theres no need to chew on the controversial leaf of the Erythroxylum coca or to drink coca tea. The cocaine plant has a lot of medicinal qualities to it, easing the strain of altitude sickness is one of them. One of the highlights was a visit to the Santa Catalina Convent, a Spanish-built building dating back to the 1500s. Hasta Pronto. T and D... read more

We last left you back in La Paz at the very start of the year. From there we jumped on a bus to Copacabana (of Lake Tititcaca fame, not the big waved, high bikinied Copacabana of Rio de Janeiro). The bus trip was pretty uneventful, although we did have to disembark at one point, and we all caught little wooden boats across a narrow section of the lake, whilst our bus caught a micro-barge which looked very unbalanced with our bus on, and ready to flip at any moment. After a slight delay caused by a young Aussie lad who left his passport in La Paz having a little trouble with the local constabulary we were back on our way and arrived at the very touristy lakeside town of Copacabana. We wandered around and were confused ... read more

Du coup, j ... read more

¡Buenos dias!

Arequipa and Colca Canyon One twelve hour luxury bus trip later, myself and an AMAZING (they might read this) bunch of Sydneysiders who i´d met in Cusco at Home Sweet Home touched base in Arequipa. I´d heard mixed reviews about the city, but other than not being too happy about getting thrown back into the desert after a too-short stay in the jungle, i was really impressed. It seemed incredibly modern after two weeks of Cusco, but the orange buildings and grand cathedrals lining the plaza (not to mention the fact it was FAR easier on the wallet than Cusco) quickly won me over during the hostel´s complementary rooftop breakfast on the morning of our arrival. The things written on the buttons of this keyboard don´t match what appears on the screen when you press them. ... read more

We got into Arequipa late afternoon and immediately went for some food. Funny thing was that we ended up having some Peruvian Chinese food which was actually pretty good. The next day we walked around Arequipa and got to know the sites. We went to the Plaza de Armas which is beautiful at night and went to the Inka museum where Juanita The Ice Princess rests. She was a young girl who was sacrificed on the summit of a mountain next to a volcano and got frozen to the ground as time passed by. It is funny how she sits currently in the museum at below zero temperatures so that her body can be preserved in the awesome condition she is in today, makes you think about life. At the end of the day we catched ... read more
