Thursday 7th June Last day in Cusco...following the early rises from the previous days, I thought I was going to get a long lie in...no chance! I was up at 6am, so decided to tackle the packing ahead of my departure to Arequipa later this evening. So rather than putting my dirty clothes to a laundry, I have instead re-packed everything so that the clean clothers are easier to access...I am sure my new washing machine back home can cope with the Peruvian dust no problem. Today is an unexpected surprise, there is a local Christian festival. So I arrived in the town square at 9:30am and got a prime spot to watch the parade and listen to the sermon and beautiful signing (what a turn for the books considering my lack of christian faith other ... read more

We arrived at the cemetery bus station in La Paz finally after a puncture en route in the taxi and the bus was just about to leave. This meant the only remaining space was in the front with the driver, George basically sitting on the engine. It was a fairly hair-raising journey, as all of them have been, but this was slightly more scary because we could see everything we were about to crash into. We checked into a hostal in Copacabana, had supper and nodded off. In the morning we decided to go down to the lakeside and do something vaguely aquatic. In the end we chose fishing and were promptly rented a rowing boat and two rods and pointed in the direction of where there might be some 'truchas' (trout). George rowed out there ... read more

Some things you may not know about Peru. The Incas were originally Japonese monks. The Inca civilisation invented ink. Peru means share the love. Peru is home to only 3 people. I find it har... read more

Alright folks I went to Machu Picchu. AH-MA-ZING!!! I now understand what the big deal was all about. Seriously, incredible, I mean words don't even describe it... the history, the views, it's just-- majestic. I would say it definitely counts as something you should do before you die (not to be morbid haha). I went with little Julia, the younger Julia (not my roommate) that was actually living in the Home. I'll be sure to post pictures. On the way to Machu Picchu, you pass through the city of Cusco, it's like included in any tour you purchase. Super cute city. It's very different from Arequipa; it's colder, and wetter but also greener. It was awesome, it was really touristy, but it was still fun to explore somewhere new. Did some serious shopping... get excited ;) ... read more

The road from Punta Arenas to Arica has taken us the entire length of Chile, and now it really is time to leave. A scant few miles to the north of Arica lies the Peruvian border, and beyond that a vast new country to explore. However, we're only going to be spending a few days in Peru - this time around, at least. While in San Pedro de Atacama, we booked flights to Colombia, at the very top of the continent. We then plan to swing southwards in a rough "C" shape, passing through Ecuador, and to visit Peru properly from around July. The reasons behind the rather odd itinerary are purely climatic - July and August will be a better time to do some hiking in the Peruvian Andes, which after the wonders of Patagonia ... read more

We arrived at Hostel Santa Catalina at about 7:30 in the morning. And this is something we have not really talked about, but is worth mentioning here. The check-in/check-out process/times for hostels is remarkable. You could never check in to a hotel in the US at 7:30 in the morning. It just is not an option. Santa Catalina, however, had a room pretty much ready to go for us. I am assuming the room had been occupied by people who went out on one of the early morning tours (read as early as 2:00 AM). The hostel setup was really nice with great views from the rooftop deck. We soaked those in before setting off on a self tour of the city. One of our Peru books had a short walking tour that highlighted the 18th ... read more

Hey folks, Happy Woman's Day! I didn't even know that day existed. Oops.. but they celebrate it here for sure. Ok-- that was from a saved blog I had started. Woman's Day is actually on March 9th.. haha. Remember when I said in my last blog, I'm going to try to blog more often and give you more information. Here goes for real this time. The Job Alright I currently have a job! I work in the mornings and some evenings and I'm at the Home in the afternoons (most afternoons). I teach English. I taught myself how to teach, probably not the best profesora in the world, but it works! Julia my roommate has helped me a lot as well. She’s very encouraging, and gives me ideas for my students. My classes are very small, ... read more

For a change, the border crossing from Bolivia to Peru was simple, no lost passport, no complicated change of transport, not even a problem with visas, stickers, or anything else border guards could deem necessary, it was wonderful! We spent a day on the Peruvian side of Titicaca at Puno and ate far too much candyfloss while watching the endless procession of colourful dancers pass by. On a sugar rush with the FANTASTIC Inca Cola (iron Bru with more additives) as its origin, we hopped on a night bus and crossed the Andes to the colonial city of Arequipa. We quickly realised that the wet season in Peru is a little different to the wet season in Asia, rather than 20 minutes of rain followed by a lovely day of hot sunshine the rainy season is ... read more

Good breakfast with yoghurt, granola, fresh fruits, eggs and fresh rolls. Tried coca tea which is supposed to help with altitude sickness. Just tastes 'green'! Neither of us have felt particularly well today - probably tiredness rather than altitude and getting dehydrated on the long bus journey yesterday. Wandered into Plaza des Armas, Arequipa's central square. It's just like Plaza des Armas in Lima only a bit smaller.... There was a demonstration happening in the centre with someone beating drums and everyone dressed in sort of white overalls with big placards and some of the people were chained together. They were being watched by a row of policemen with full riot gear. Apparently these demonstrations happen about 3 or 4 times a week and are always peaceful. Haven't a clue what they were demonstrating about but ... read more

Everyone awoke when it became light (5.30 am). Had a second shower and we went for a coffee at the nearby hotel which we ordered at 7.00 when they opened but actually arrived at 7.30. We wandered off again for a 50 minute walk near the ruins and came back to find breakfast prepared. A good night´s sleep for Ed. Jo got fed up of her sleeping bag sliding down off her mat and continually having to wriggle back up. Also the ground is harder than a bed!!! Got on the bus around 10ish for a very long drive, weaving along the coast for most of the way until we started upwards around 5.00 pm. Had a couple of stops along the way for lunch and necessities. We are both getting on with Stephen King's new ... read more
