26-27th April ’13 Arequipa Our final couple of days in the lovely city of Arequipa, but before I go into that I have to add in a bit I missed about our Colca Canyon Trip. The whole of the time we were in the minibus Howard was opening and closing the window so he could stick his arm out and take pictures – infact he took well over 200 pictures on this trip! He was so attached to the camera I had to virtually prise it out of his fingers to take the few snaps I wanted. Anyway despite taking pictures on the journey there he had to then take pictures all the way back again to Arequipa – as ‘we were now on the opposite side of the road so the view would be different’, ... read more

The Arequipa Cooking Experience is great for learning to make a certain dish and building your confidence level in your abilities. It WILL NOT instantly turn you into a world class cook of Peruvian cuisine, but you will know how to make the dish that you signed up for. Being the first to sign up is the trick. If you are first, YOU get to select the menu item that you will prepare. Get in touch with them as early as possible: http://www.peruviancookingexperience.com/ If memory serves, the three menu choices are lomo saltado, ceviche and chorillos pan fried fish, and rocoto relleno. Rocoto peppers are the chiles that make Habanero peppers cry. Since my wife, Rose, is Peruvian she is already an accomplished lomo saltado cook, so she selected ceviche, a dish she has never made ... read more

22/4/13 Arequipa I slept the whole night through, no gasping woo hoo! Today we did next to nothing, just getting acclimatised or rather sitting in the garden being lazy! Hunger eventually drove us out and we ate with the locals in a tiny little place with about 8 tables squashed into it, luckily one was free. For £1.30 we had a huge bowl of Peruvian broth (like scotch broth with lots of lentils), followed by chicken, rice and salad, a glass of orange squash and 8 slices of banana for pudding! Bargain!! We walked back up to the main square and had a bit more of a mooch around the city streets looking at the lovely white buildings and architecture before heading back for more lazing about. Arequipa is known as The White City, with building ... read more

Basílica Catedral de Arequipa http://www.museocatedralarequipa.org.pe/home.html The Cathedral of Arequipa has, within the last two years, incorporated a very worthwhile museum. Due to the nature of its construction, it does not seem very handicap friendly, so I would not advise even trying it for wheelchair bound individuals. There is a LOT of upstairs climbing to get to the surprise at the end of the tour. Photography is allowed inside the cathedral but NOT inside the actual museum. This is done primarily for security reasons as they do not want potential thieves mapping out their security systems. There are a LOT of highly valuable artifacts in the museum. I did encourage them to suggest to the management that they have professional quality pictures made of all of the exhibits and sell them on CDs for ... read more

Peru! 21/4/13 Arica, Chile to Tacna and on to Arequipa, Peru Last night Howard had to make a stand, or should I say sprag on the bunch of Chilean lads who were making a right racket after the official 11pm SILENCIO! He gave them until 11.30pm and then off he went to the office to complain. He shot back into our room just before the member of we heard one of the staff giving them a stern telling off ha ha. All was quiet after that, well if you are going to post rules you have to be prepared to enforce them! Up bright and early to do the border crossing, we attempted and failed to eat the dry cheese sandwich that was for breakfast and then called for a taxi to take us to the ... read more

Be to gera proga daugiau pabendrauti su Alexu. Kontrastų mieste nemažai, kaikurie kvartalai gražūs i... read more

El Monasterio de Santa Catalina de Arequipa. The Peruvians use monastery and convent pretty much interchangeably, so it is really the Convent of Santa Catalina. The price for general admission is $35 soles per person (roughly ten bucks) and to get the full benefit, you will want to hire a guide for an additional 20 soles for the group. After an hour with the guide, you can return at your leisure to the places you saw for study in greater detail or more picture taking. Flash photography is allowed. We were very lucky to get Sandra for our guide. Not only is she a very nice young lady, she is not too hard on the eyes either. She studied English in the United States, so her abilities in English are far better than most and she ... read more

Okay, I'm a bit grumpy right now. I had about three pages written for this blog (none of it saved). I touched one wrong key on my laptop, and pfttttt, GONE! Now I am saving every other sentence. I am behind on my posts because my wireless card in my laptop took a dump. I got a neat little TC Link device and we're back in business. We arrived in Lima on 4/9/2013. For those of you from other countries, that is April 9. The LAN flight was very turbulent (and perhaps a bit flatulent) the entire trip. We were met at the airport by a friend of the family and he took us to set up our cell phone that we use for traveling. We also changed a bunch of dollars to soles. When that ... read more

Autobusas gerokai patogesnis nei tie kuriais teko važinėti Bolivijoj, tad naktį visai padoriai pamiegam. Alexo mama... read more

Well, here we go again. We're not gone yet. Heck, we're just half packed, but as they say down south, "We're fixin' on it." This time we are heading for Arequipa, the White City, so called because a large percentage of the buildings are built from white sillar stone. We are only going for a week this time, ostensibly to attend a wedding, but really just because we want to go and that seemed to be a good enough excuse. We will be staying at the Casa Arequipa, a highly rated B&B. If the comments are even half accurate, I think we should be able to survive. We are thinking that the Colca Canyon trip might be too much for a single day trip, so we will have to decide based on the number of "oooo's" ... read more
