Carnival continues with nothing other than parties, beers, good times and fantastic friends! Notice there is no mention of sleep!! We managed to bag ourself some tickets for the Sambadrome on Sunday night (the carnival dancing you see on tv) and wow it was FANTASTIC. Words and photos will never do it justice. From 10pm to 7:30am we watched five samba schools strut their stuff for an hour each with unimaginable costumes and floats with every colour you can imagine. It was literally an orgasm for the eyes!!! You just cannot fathom organising that many people on that scale! Some people may have seen that there was an accident after the first school, where the last float crashed into the crowd. We did witness this but we're unsure of what exactly had happened. Local news did ... read more

Hello. We have to begin by reporting something that has never happened before on one of our cruises. Last night we got a phone call from our son-in-law Ron Chinn. He was calling to tell us that Stephanie had to have emergency surgery on Monday morning. He said she was doing alright and did not want us to return home. We gave it a lot of thought and decided to hear what he had to say when he called again this evening. In between calls Valerie sent an e-mail that Stephanie seemed to be doing alright and that she and Elizabeth were thinking about going to visit on Friday, but it did not seem urgent to get to her right away. When Ron called this evening, Stephanie was also on the phone and told us she ... read more

Geo: -33.4691, -70.642Chile is increasingly famous for its wines. So today we have a wine tour Concha y Toro which is one of the largest wineries in chili and maybe even the world. This region is for red wines and over the coast is for the white wines. Chile is border on both sides by mountains (Andes on the east and coastal mountain range on the west. The Maipo River Valley is home to many wineries known for their red wines elaborate estate. The Casablanca valley is the one between Santiago and Valparaiso. The ride out there was okay and not very scenic. There is some very poor regions here. We toured winery which was nice. Bought two bottles to,take on board the ship. The Chardonnay was not good. We will see about the rest. We ... read more

Buenos Dias from Santiago. We had a good long sleep last night and are much more rested today - hopefully adjusted to the new time zone here. We got up and went down to the complimentary breakfast buffet by the pool. It is a very nice open-air area and they had a fairly comprehensive set of choices. They had English-style bacon (somewhat undercooked) instead of American (crispy) bacon, but most everything else was good. And there were no pesos needed this morning. For anyone who took the time to figure out how much our meals were in “real money” you see that the hotel food is pretty pricey. The monopoly-style Chilean cash creates some mental confusion trying to think how much something is actually costing. But we have to say that yesterday’s food was quite good ... read more

Geo: -33.4691, -70.642February 13We had a long uneventful flight. Just so tiring but was worth extra money to upgrade. Arrived in Santiago right on schedule. Customs wasn't bad but then I got ushered through the handicapped section. Took bus to hotel got signed in and had a chance for a short rest then grabbed a bite to eat. Already drank water at hotel. Just habit when I took my meds. So heres to hoping that it was well purified. Will try and do better until we get on the ship. It us beautifully warm and sunny. Lots of haze and about 80. Boarded a bus after a lunch for a 3 hour city tour. Saw downtown presidential palace where president works. The country does not provide living quarters. Plaza de Armas - Santiago's main square, Constitution ... read more

Our trip began yesterday morning (Saturday) with the “final packing” of the suitcases. We anticipate that much of the time we will have nice warm weather, but there may also be some cooler days as we explore some of the southernmost locations. This means we had to bring more clothing than usual so we brought a 3rd suitcase. Anyway, we got it all packed and only time will tell whether we actually brought the right things. We were given a ride to the airport by our friends the Schmalbecks. They picked us up at 10:15 and delivered us to the airport in plenty of time to perform the check-in with United and the TSA activities - HOORAY, we were PRE-Check approved. Our flight didn’t leave until 1:25 so we had time to get some lunch at ... read more

SANTIAGO, CHILE IMPRESSIONS I arrived in Santiago in the dark. The taxi was overpriced and that makes me cranky. I smoothed my own feathers, not liking the persona of the grumpy old woman tourist. I forced myself to chat amicably with the taxi driver, and when we arrived at the hotel I allowed the driver to carry my bags into the hotel, which I do myself, all the time. The driver stood in the lobby waiting for a tip and all I had was a fifteen dollar bill in local currency, forcing me to hand it to him. It left a really bad taste in my mouth. Not an auspicious beginning to my stay. I am ashamed to say I had no expectations for Chile. Santiago was simply the point of embarkation to my next dive ... read more
