Tuesday, my fourth day in Chile, was one of the most beautiful days I have ever spent. We had signed up with ilovechiletours.com, for their Andes Mountains Gem Route tour, which included a visit to the Concha y Toro Vineyard, and then a visit to Embalse El Yeso in Cajon del Maipo. Once again, it was a very nice experience with only my friend and I, our guide Fran, and our driver Gabriel, on this trip. Both Fran and Gabriel were young and fun, and very enthusiastic. We immediately developed a rapport with both of them. I guess the advantage of being the only guests on the trip, plus the fact that it's a new and small company and their services are very personal, and their interest in our enjoyment very genuine. I had already been ... read more

On Day 3 of my visit, Monday, I had one of the most unique and meaningful experiences in Chile. We signed up with a company called Instant Tours. This company provides participants with a vintage Polaroid camera to create your own unique souvenirs. We signed up for the Urban Tour, which advertised exploring off the beaten track and learning the history of street art and muralism in Chile, whilst using the Metro System to get around. Anticipating the fearsome prospect of trains being too full, we set out an hour before our meeting time. We overestimated the transit problems, so we arrived early at our meeting spot at a coffee shop in the Centro Gabriela Mistral. As it happened, our guide Camilo (Milo) had also set out early to avoid unexpected problems. Camilo was delightful. In ... read more

My second day in Chile, Sunday, we decided to visit the historical neighborhood of Barrio Lastarria, which is a very popular tourist hub packed with cafes, restaurants, and eye catching street art. We reached the “Alameda” (Avenida Liberador Bernardo O’Higgins) by Metro via the Universidad Catolica metro station. The Metro wasn not too crowded on a Saturday, and it is certainly a very quick and efficient way to get around. It is certainly helpful not to have to try to find parking, which is always difficult and expensive. Our first stop was GAM, or the Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral, and the two exhibits it was hosting. Built in 1972, it was originally a convention center, and since 2010 it has been a cultural center open to the public, devoted to promoting performing arts and music. When ... read more

As the museums are closed on Mondays we decided we could just take it easy today. Daisy had a good sleep-in and we didn’t get out until 11:15am. We walked over to the Mercado Central Markets and discovered the fish markets and a section full of seafood restaurants. As it was lunch time we thought this was a great place to have some seafood. My first choice based on Trip Advisor scores was closed unfortunately so we took a chance on another one called San Antonio Lalita. Daisy had a seafood soup and I had a seafood stew and both were delicious. The waiter even gave us a couple of complementary pisco sours which is a Chilean drink made from Chilean pisco brandy, lemons from Pica, sugar and ice. As you all know, I don’t drink ... read more

We spent today with our friends and locals, Pakita and Emanuel whom we met in Vietnam three years ago. Emanuel had to work in the morning so Pakita came out and met us 10:30am at our apartment. As the museums are closed on Mondays, we were keen to visit the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art and the nearby Monseda Palace. Our timing was perfect as there was a large crowd gathered at the rear of the Palace for the Changing of the Guard and we got there just as they were starting. It was very entertaining as there was a brass band playing music including a tune my father use to always whistle or hum. When that finished we walked around to the front of the Palace for a look and then went into the Cultural ... read more

Left home 8:30am. Krissy kindly drove us to the airport. Heavy traffic and got to the airport around 9:15am. Had checked-in the night before so just had to drop-off the bags. Everything gets more automated as time moves on. Self-serve to get your luggage tags then check in the bags yourself. Problem is the machine kept saying we had straps on our bags and we ended up having to put them in tubs before they went through. At 19.4kgs and 18.5 kgs we don't have much room for any extras. We tried reducing our luggage but it's hard when you have to pack for cold and warm weather. As usual the automatic passport check didn't believe it was me and I had to be checked through manually. Then I was asked to go through the full ... read more

As parents with small kids, I think you end up taking those small moments where everything is going well, be it five minutes, ten minutes, or whatever, and they make an entire day worth it...even though there may have been a lot of effort, a fair bit of whining (not necessarily just from the kids), and a few moments where you thought that maybe the whole endeavor you’d undertaken could have been a mistake... ...yesterday was like that for us. As I mentioned in my last blog post, we had all been smacked in the face a bit by the undertaking of moving here, and the weekend had been ruled somewhat by that stress. We did make the effort though on Sunday afternoon to focus on going to a festival called “Chile Lindo” (loosely translated it ... read more

After a complimentary Pisco sour at the hotel restaurant we slept until about 9:30 - very unusual for me. So it was up and about in quick order, after breakfast of course. First stop was the fanicular - or cable car - 300m up to San Cristobal hill where there is a very large statue of the Virgin Mary. The view was good if a bit hazy and there were heaps of people especially cyclists exploring the park. We headed back down and explored the Bellavista area, famous for it’s street art. There are lots of restaurants in the main part but we soon got down some side streets. Needless to say I took tonnes of photos and could have stayed there for hours. However with only one day in town we had no time to ... read more

After an uneventful flight we arrive in Santiago at 2pm Friday. It is surprisingly grey and cold but the airport necessities were efficient, until we looked for our pickup. Lucky though, Linda found an alternate pick up (I am going to have to keep an eye on her..) and we determined that Flight centre had let us down. I negotiated a taxi rate of $35 US with Linda’s new friend and we headed off. He introduced us to a driver and we got on a bus, to go to a car park where our driver scurried off and got a car - not sure whose! Half way to the hotel he says in his broken English 35,000 peso. The Chilean peso is approx 666 to the USD so this means about 50 USD. Needless to say ... read more

Life tends to be a series of small decisions, like where to eat, what to wear, whether or not I should I should click on “yes” when Netflix asks me “are you still there?” (yes I am, and thanks Netflix for making me feel like a lazy piece of s***). And a small decision that paid off big this morning that we made, and by “we“ I mean “Steph”, was to not drive and set up transportation to take us down to the immigration office today to register with the authorities (part 1) and then to the registrar’s office to get our RUT (part 2, and a separate cab ride from part 1), which is essentially a SIN and gets your life going here. I can’t imagine what would have happened if we would have been ... read more
