Hi Everyone, So after the mess that was yesterday, we woke in our freezing cold room, well according to Vick I was toasty. We got our free breakfast, of tea or coffee and 2 biscuits not the breakfast we were looking for bud it was something. Also the owner offered to drive us to the bus terminal so we were happy. We packed up and soon were at the bus terminal, so far in South America we have found that the buses all run very late, both turning up and getting to your destination. Today was no different, the bus was about 30 mins late and it ended up 4 hours late!! YES 4 HOURS!! The seats on the buses are really good called semi-cama, which is half bed, the drive was amazing, the views are ... read more

After almost 20 hours of travel, including sitting on the tarmac in Cairns for an hour, and then running for 2 different planes in both Brisbane and then Auckland we finally arrived in Santiago on time. (BTW, in Auckland, when the information board says 'Final Call', this doesn't mean the final call. It means the final call before we start calling the important people onto the plane first....). After spending more than hour in Santiago Airport looking for Renee's bag, we left with the assurance it would appear the following day. It appeared at our hostel that evening via special delivery. Santiago is an interesting place. As my first experience in a country where I didn't know the language, I was overwhelmed yet excited. I loved the anonymity of it all, and the struggle to try ... read more

Finally, as promised, I have updated all my blogs of South America with photos. I also edited the blogs too as I noticed that the tablet I'd been using while we travelled had, annoyingly, kept altering what I'd written (damn predicted text) and some of it just didn't make sense. I will just re publish this blog and if you're interested in the photos you can keep going to the next one and the next one and the photos will be there. If you're not interested , sorry for cloging up your in box with the alerts. Chilly in Chile We arrived in Santiago to a crisp 6 degrees C. Felt like Manchester to be honest but by the time we'd collected our bags and found a bus to take us downtown the sun was out. ... read more

“I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where. I love you simply, without problems or pride: I love you in this way because I do not know any other way of loving but this, in which there is no I or you, so intimate that your hand upon my chest is my hand, so intimate that when I fall asleep your eyes close.”Pablo Neruda, 100 Love Sonnets. Pablo Neruda is adored by the Chileans. The Nobel Prize winning poet was a collector of beautiful things. His houses are full of furniture from all corners of the world and art from many cultures. Books and maps were some of his most treasured possessions and his houses were oddly designed and resembled the interiors of ships. His love of the sea was evident in his ... read more

Yesterday afternoon, after a swim and nap by the hotel pool we drove to the highest point in Santiago to view the sunset. Our driver, Hector, was challenged by the hoards of bicyclists also climbing the hill. Also, some of the vehicles that were going up were crawling so that they would arrive just before sunset, not a moment earlier. I taught Hector an American word that if taken literally, described an antiquated device that women used to use to clean their unmentionables. It was very hard to explain this with my limited Spanish but once it was clarified, and once Fran was finished pummeling me for being immature and disgusting, both our driver Hector and our guide Alwin, found the term hilarious. They practiced their pronunciation until they got it right. Now Hector knows what ... read more

We woke up pretty early and walked down to Santa Lucia metro station to meet Alexandra and her husband at 10 am. They were free until 1 pm, so we took the metro to the Quinta Normal station, where we would visit the park by that same name. The park is massive, and has many museums inside it. The entrance is nice too and you need to register before entering. I think that is to keep Vagrants out. The park reminded my very much of Gorky Park in Moscow. We strolled by the little lake with the boats in it and past a nice fountain too. Our first stop was the Museum of Science and Technology. It was about $2.00 to enter. Although I think it is outdated, it was still a good experience. We then ... read more

Alexandra and her husband were busy on this day, so we decided we would visit the zoo and ride the funicular to the top of Cerro San Cristobal. We awoke early, got ready and headed out to the metro. We rode it three stops to the Baquedano station. From there it was about a 15-20 minutes walk to the funicular. We had been in this same are the day before when we ate lunch with our friends at Shukran. We purchased our tickets for the funicular and got off on the first stop, which was for the zoo. The funicular does not stop at the zoo on the way down so that is why we chose this first. The zoo here is a real deal at around $3 per person. It is also very nice and ... read more

Today, Alexandra's husband had to work early, so we went to explore the Museo Chileno de Arte Precolombino. My wife had really wanted to see this and I am glad we did, because it was a nice museum. We saw all the exhibits in a couple of hours and learned a lot. We were meeting Alexandra and her husband for lunch at 2 pm. She knew we had been disappointed about the Doner House, so she suggested a place call Shukran, for some shawarma. This place was in the Bellavista area and was easy to find. The shawarma meal was huge and we could not finish it, but it was very good. The staff there were awesome too. After that great lunch, we walked around the neighborhood and decided to get some ice cream. We ... read more

We awoke at 8 am and got ready so we could meet Alexandra and her husband at 9 am. He had to work in the afternoon, so we would explore a little until then. We met up inside the Santa Lucia metro station and then went to the top of Cerro Santa Lucia, which translates to "hill". The climb to the top is easy and there are awesome views from up there. There are different monuments and fountains to see during the climb up the steps. We stayed at the top for 10-15 minutes taking in the massive city below us. It was overcast so you could not see the Andes Mountains very clearly. When we went back down, we walked down some city streets to Plaza de Armas and visited the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the ... read more

We drove from Valparaiso back to the airport in Santiago. Our Santiago landlord had arranged a taxie for us and it was nice seeing the driver holding a card with our name on it. We knew we liked Santago before getting out of the taxie. Our studio is located in the Bella's Arts neighborhood, the streets and sidewalks are clean, lots of green space and views of the Andes. We are only half a block from the metro station, one block from the Art Museo and restaurants, cafes and a grocery store right outside our door. We rented bikes one day, the city has lots of bike paths so you can ride in the city safely. We rode up to the San Cristobal Hill which was steep and then down and around the City. The park ... read more
