Alexandra and her husband were busy on this day, so we decided we would visit the zoo and ride the funicular to the top of Cerro San Cristobal. We awoke early, got ready and headed out to the metro. We rode it three stops to the Baquedano station. From there it was about a 15-20 minutes walk to the funicular. We had been in this same are the day before when we ate lunch with our friends at Shukran. We purchased our tickets for the funicular and got off on the first stop, which was for the zoo. The funicular does not stop at the zoo on the way down so that is why we chose this first. The zoo here is a real deal at around $3 per person. It is also very nice and clean. We walked around the zoo for several hours, making sure that we saw every animal.
The location is great, as it is a little ways up the hill and so there are great views of the city. I think the aviary was the best and it had a great overlook of
Santiago.
Later on, we went back to the funicular and finished
our journey to the top of the hill. It was hard to believe how high we were up there. We were able to get a wonderful view of the entire city and the Andes Mountains. We also went up to the base of the Virgin Mary statue. On our way back to the funicular, we saw a Basque Church up on the hill and since my wife has Basque heritage, she loved it! It is a beautiful church too.
The ride down the funicular was easy, but they had to stop a few times due to a street dog in the tracks.
It kept weaving in front of the train and I thought for sure it was going to be hit. Thankfully, it wasn't.
At the bottom of Cerro San Cristobal, we started to look for a place to eat a late lunch. We couldn't really decide on any place we saw. They all seemed good, so it was a tough choice. Then we saw The Pizza Factory. We looked at the menu and it sounded great. The owner was out front and talked to us a little so we gave it a try. It ended up
being very good, and the staff very friendly! We were happy with our choice and relaxed there for a couple of hours.
It was early evening when we went back to our apartment. The girls stayed there, while I went out to the market. I bought us some wine to take home on the flight. Of course, Chilean wine is some of the best in the world, so we just had to bring some back! The market lines were insane! I waited in line close to an hour. Grocery shopping in Santiago is not fun.
Back at our place, we all went to sleep.
