Peering out the window of our 12th floor apartment on Copacabana beach we can see a stretch of coastline that usually adorns the computer screen saver of office workers. Mountains that sink into the sea, wide boulevards lined with palm trees, white sandy beaches dotted with coloured umbrellas and people splashing in the cool atlantic ocean. There is a massive market selling futbol shirts, buffalo hand bags, an assortment of handicrafts, fairy floss, bikins, masks and of course Havianas. Along the beach, touts sell sliced watermelon, cold beers, prawns!, sunglasses sarongs, blow up paddle pools, jewellary and laundry baskets. (Yep, i am not sure why either). They traipse up and down the beach all day in the searing heat, hoping to catch the eye of a thirsty beach goer. We often help them out by enjoying ... read more

Also we just checked into our hotel for 5 nights over carnival. Its so nice to have a room to ourselves instead of sharing with a load of strangers. Ok so we spent the first 5 days in Copacabana (couldnt find Lola now matter how hard i tried) The beach in Copa is beautiful. Alot of Brazilians take car of there bodies, running up and down the beach ... read more

It was a pity that the Sugar Loaf was in clouds and so was the mountain opposite, which was hiding the sun. Never mind. The Aussie girls left earlier. Vic and I had to get back to our place by ourselves. We found that the taxi drivers right outside the ticket office wanted to charge three times higher than the normal metered price for a taxi for the distance to our hostel. We refused. I suggested walking up to and along the main street and was right, we quickly got on a metered taxi and paid the fair price. That night we went to another "quilo" place, which was ok, nothing great. But I enjoyed having the choice of picking bits of different deserts to try instead of having to pick just one. We were ... read more

So we are finally in Brazil, thanks to an expected snow storm it took us a little longer than expected to make it here, but were here and that´s what matters! Thursday - Our first full day was spent at the beach. We´re staying in a hostel in Copacabana beach not more than 3 blocks from the shore line. The entire sidewalks are black and white marble mosaics hand placed in geometric patterns. You walk through the nieghbourhoods and cant help but be captivated by the lush vegetation, I saw plam trees over 12 stories high. The beach is beautiful, the waves were so huge that it was actually dangerous to swim. So we sprawled out and just took it all in. The beach is paraded by vendors who pretty much sell anything you could want, ... read more

What a crazy, messy, noisy, bright, sunny, head-foggy week. From the day that Rita and I arrived in Rio, two days before the start of Carnaval, the time we spent here was non-stop, with the hardest decision we were faced with each day was whether to go to another street party or to the beach. We didn't really know what to expect from this city as we'd heard so many stories about how dangerous it could be, ie. "they will cut off your hand to get to your camera", including a girl we met in Buenos Aires who had a knife held to her throat while checking out the sites in the main square in the city centre. Pretty much on arrival to the hostel, we worked out that the other backpackers fell into two groups ... read more

Hi again, A quick blog. More on Brazil to come. We have been having the best time in Brazil. This place is crazy at the moment with Carneval building up. Landed late at night in the pouring rain. Decided not to be wimps and got the bus into Copacabana. The driver was cool and made sure we got off in the right place. Met a nice Kiwi girl on her own. When she got off in Botafogo a local lady yelled at the driver to get out and make sure she was safe before we drove off. Our accommodation was good and they made us toasted cheese sandwiches and omlette so we didn´t have to brave the elements after a 10hr flight. Brazilians love cheese, meat, caipirinhas and hate clothes. Don´t mind a beer either. The ... read more

Iguazu falls- they are nice. go look up a picture of them online since i dont provide you any pictures on this blog. Rio de Janeiro, a tropical pais: First Impressions I havent been to a place like this. i have heard many things before getting here, usually along the lines that it is dangerous, the second most dangerous country in latin america after venezuela (colombia where there is a civil war is supposedly third!). around the city you sense a sort of uneasy peace that exists in the tourist areas of the city. the main beaches copacobana and ipanema, clean large beautiful beaches right in the middle of the city, are very safe but just behind the hills are large favelas (shanty towns). also on one end of the line of hotels, i think the ... read more

bom dia! Inkl. Wir freuen uns, euch alle ganz bald wieder z... read more

16th January - 23rd January Arriving in Rio was like a long drawn out dream finally coming true. it had played in my mind so many times. it was amazing that i had finally set foot in this wonderous city. Rio De janeiro definitely did not let me down. The capital of Samba, the birthplace of the hypnotic Bossa Nova, beautiful beaches full of hot tanned bodies. Christ the redeemer, sugarloaf mountain, the list is endless.... I checked myself into Mellow Yellow hostel in Copacabana. Very few hostels in South America hold the reputation of such hostels. like Milhouse in BA and Loki in Cuzco, this was definitely a big party hostel. Rooms are admittedly crammed to the max. but they had an awesome rooftop bar with mountain views from your bar stool. so having arrived ... read more

Rio has been conquered. Not that we got the best weather in the world while we were there, thus making it hard to do all the sights, but Rio has been done! We arrived in Rio on the 29th December, and we were booked into stay at a hostel in Copacabana called Stone of a Beach. It was a really cool hostel only 3 blocks from the beach, and the people that we were there with over New Years were a real blast - a mix of people that we had spent Christmas with, plus a truckload of others all looking for a good time! We went out the first night we got there to a street party in one of the suburbs of Rio, Lapa. The streets were full of people, and stalls selling food, ... read more
