21st July - 28th July 2006 Arrived in Buenos Aires late at night. The hotel had a taxi organised which made life so easy. Our pad is not as luxurious as Santiago but we’re in the heart of Recoleta, the Parisian quarter of the city. It’s really chic here and we’re feeling grubby and dowdy. A quick shop will sort things!! Recoleta Cemetery is at the corner of our street. Eva and Juan Peron are buried there after some years in exile. Eva was quite a gal. Apparently hated by the military and ruling classes because of her support of the poor. She got women the vote and legalised divorce. You can tell we haven’t been to see Evita!! The cemetery is a tourist attraction. There are some pretty grand tombs around! Having bought a pair ... read more

NEXT STOP...........Rio de Janeiro. After our very long bus ride and several stops at juicy meat restaurants, we made it to Rio. We were in luck, Nadja spoke to an old friend who lives in Rio and they invited us to their luxurious flat on the Copacabana, the place where music and passion are always in fashion. This family even has an elevator that comes right into the house.NNIIICCEEE! We had an absolutely fabulous time at their place. On the first day we went straight to the famous beaches of the copacabana and Ipanema. The weather on day one was great. The beaches filled with thongs, thongs and more thongs. Beautiful toned bodies everywhere. Brazilians love to flex their muscles and play football on the beach. On a good day you can see the makings of ... read more

RIO AT NIGHT

Hello everyone! Just to update you as to where we are at on our trek around Brazil - We're currently in Salvador, having completed a massive 29 hour bus journey from Rio - not a pleasant experience I can tell you. So in this travel blog, we will update you on our time in Rio. Initially stayed in Ipanema Thursday onwards, gorgeous beaches, and visited Sugar Loaf Mountain on the Saturday and spent some time on the beach watching the Volley Ball. We took the cable car to the top of Sugar Loaf, which had a fantastic view of Rio, if a little cloudy as were so high up. Hostel that we stayed in was pretty cool, enjoyed some very nice Caiprinhas at their bar very chilled out place. Also, visited the bar where 'Girl from ... read more

There was only one reason for us to head back to Rio and that was for the Copa Final between Flamengo and Vasco Da Gama. To pass the time, the afternoon was spent visiting Sugar Loaf, 396 metres high overlooking Rio. The views from the top were spectacular and i'm sure even the photos don't justify how amazing it was. Early evening, Rio was buzzing with everyone awaiting the kick off between two of Rio's big guns. Fans lined the streets constantly letting off fireworks and singing. Arriving at the Maracana was unbelievable, the atmosphere was something i've never experienced at a football before. We were standing in the Flamengo end so it would have been suicidal to have supported Vasco. I can't describe how noisy it was inside the stadium but the fans were always ... read more

Back to Rio This was a bit annoying but due to the circumstance of the flights that we booked we had to return to Rio, despite the fact that the iguassu falls are about half the way to our next destination. It did however give us a chance to see the only "must do" activity we had missed in Rio which was to visit the Maracana stadium. I think that visiting a stadium with such history and reputation as the maracana is always going to proce a little dissapoining, especially as this one has the all time highest football attendance of 199,000. It was though interesting to visit all the the typical stadium sites such as the changing rooms etc, especially thinking of all the famous names to have graced them. But as always, in my ... read more

After a 12 hour flight from Heathrow sitting next to the smelliest guy on the plane, Gurth and I eventually arrived in Rio heading for the Copacabana Mellow Yellow Hostel where we had planned to meet our friends Matt, Wash and Sam. We arrived about 8:30am and woke up the boys, the confused look on Washy's face said it all. Once the boys were up we headed straight down to the Copacabana beach, 4.5km stretch of sand and sea. It wasn't long before the Popcorn Filled Chimney Sweeps AFC 5-a-side team were in action playing against 4 other lads from our hostel and a brazilian guy who thought he was ronaldinho. After taking the piss a couple of times it was only fair we started putting him in his place and put few reducers on him. ... read more

Cariocas Arrived in Rio after a rather long flight, i think it was 14 hours including the stop off in Sao Paulo, which luckily we didnt have to leave the plane for. We also had the good fortune to be upgraded on the flight to ´world traveller plus´ which afforded us an extra 7 inches of leg room, which doesnt sound much, but when you are attempting to sleep for as much of it as possible its very much a welcome addition. After leaving the plane experienced our first ripping off of the trip in the shape of an over charged taxi, which we paid outright at the airport to the tune of 72 Reals which is about 18 pounds. To be fair we didnt actually consider it a rip off until about a week later ... read more

So England were out, it was raining and due to our predictable laziness the bus we wanted to get to Rio was sold out, not a great start to our final day in Salvador. Anyway after booking a later bus we split up to contemplate the loss and basically potter about. The night before we had met some French girls and boys and after meeting them after Englands demise i thought the best way to avoid the dwelling of the defeat was to get involved in the next game. After returning to the square where we watched the prior Brazil game tension was high and police were searching everyone, being French they decided to speak English for the game which was a good idea as the mood was tense anyway. During the game i was attempted ... read more

We arrived in Rio on April 9th pretty late and, getting a bus because the airport taxis were very overpriced, it seemed really exciting, a new country, a new language, arriving in the middle of the night. We’d booked ourselves a nice hotel online. $100 for the room was well over budget but nice for the first few days in a place like Rio, and only a block from the famous Copacabana beach. For the next three days we walked around the beachside neighbourhood, sitting on the beach in the day, and checking out the stalls selling gear to tourists and the restaurants at night, drinking beer and watching prostitutes flirt with potential customers. We both liked Rio from the start, and it felt exciting, even if we were only there a few days. I’d heard ... read more
