And relax! That's exactly what we've been doing. It's hot, hot, hot and the beaches of Natal are wonderful. We found a fantastic loft apartment for just 60 reais per night at Pousada Coco Verde and by the time we leave, we will have spent almost a week making the most of the sun, sand and sea (well, the ocean really)! We have been out and about too. One of the things you can't fail to do is a beach buggy ride. We spent a whole day with a Uruguayan couple and our guide exploring the beaches to the North of Natal. It was an amazing experience and we did a bit of dune bashing, sunbathing, swimming, and Russ even got to slide down a zip-line into a lake. To the South of Natal is Pirangi. ... read more

So after three flights and more than 30 hours of travelling, I finally arrived in Natal where my trip would begin. It was just a very short visit (2 1/2 days!) after I managed to get in contact with my friend Marcos, whose family is from there, right at the last minute. Although Marcos told me that we would be staying at his family holiday place, I did now expect to be greeted by 16 people!!:-) He also forgot to tell them that I speak Portuguese so there was a comedic 5 minute of people speaking very slowly and shouting at me:-) The look of sheer relief on their faces when they realised we could converse in their language was very funny. So I just spent a few days by the beach in Buzios, which is ... read more

After yet more travel combinations, bus, metro, bus, mini bus, we’d arrived in a little beach town called Praia da Pipa. A few people had recommended this place to us so we were looking forward to it. We eventually found our little pousada which we had pre booked on the internet for 12 pound a night, which was cheap as it had a/c, t.v and breakfast included so were glad to get decent value for money for a change. The town is a strange place, the main street is lined with posh boutiques, with some very expensive items even for U.K prices! Lots of nice restaurants and a decent nightlife, but under all that glitz is a nice laid back feel. We ate well every night, lots of seafood unsurprisingly and the best pizza place in ... read more

A Fortaleza tomada, que ... read more

Hello, Travelling up north means that we approach the equator again, weatherconditions are improving and we are glad this is springtime and not full summer. We have been exploring the Praia do Pipa, a nice beach in Tibau do Sul, walking around on the beach almost alone, or trying to spot dolphins in the sea at low tide with a lot of spectators, or looking around in little shops on mainstreet. In this region you find many shrimpfarms, and we can say they taste really good. Tonight we continu to Fortalessa with a nightbus. Hallo, Hoe meer we naar het noorden reizen en we de evenaar naderen, hoe warmer het wordt. We zijn blij dat het hier lente is en nog geen zomer, het is hier voor ons al meer dan warm genoeg. We zijn aanbeland ... read more

Mon 1st Oct: An early morning swim before breakfast; it´s amazing how many there are out surfing at 7:00 am, an ideal spot for surfing as the waves are 2/3metres and roll a long way. However I found them very strong and after 20 mins was exhausted and ready for breakfast. ´Decided to explore Natal today and use the local omnibus to get there. Although only ~15 Km away it took over an hour to get there. No different to any other city ...usual high-rise offices, shopping mall and individual outlets like C&A, Carrefour and of course Macdonalds. Just browsed, bought a few snacks and ´Headed back for Ponte Negro.Tried a minibus this time which only took 20 mins. ´Investigated getting to Forteleza and bought a coach ticket for travelling tomorrow night - leaving just before ... read more

Sun 30th Sept After yesterday´s energetic thrills decided to have a fairly quiet lazy day. Shared a taxi with the couple from Sao Paulo and journeyed inland - looked at sugar cane fields; they grow a lot of it here, not just for sugar (which they eat a lot of anyway) but for making alcohol for fuelling cars and drinking. Also went to a big attraction, way inland - a competition judging the skills of young cowboys ( it looked a bit like a cross between sheep-dog trials and a rodeo) - very interesting. We drove further south along the coast and into Pipa, a popular resort (expensive). 'Had a long swim but did not like the beach - lots of hidden rocks. As we thought Porta Negra was better, we just and a snack there ... read more
