This is going to be a short message, Karolina and I got robbed on a beach in Natal yesterday. We are OK but the experience wasn´t. Karolina lost her purse with money (wisely giving it away) but my handbag was snatched with my camera and some local cash in it and of course lots of other little things but thank God we kept our passports and cards in money belts at that time!!! The police told us we're in the unlucky 1% of tourists who are robbed in Natal each year (1% - yeah right).... read more

"Oi"! Ok, so far our Portuguese.... From a sunny (but today tropical rainy) Pipa, greetings from Mar&Mar ! Finally we made it to the REAL Brazil with samba, beach, capoeira, petit bikinis and of course caipirinha´s at sunset. Quite a different taste compared to the European touch of Argentina and Uruguay ... in terms of weather, food, landscape & the way of travelling (need to be more aware of personal safety). After the amazing Iguazu Falls, we had one day to spare and decided to visit Itaipu, the world´s largest hydro-electrical power plant (Andreas, even we, non-technical folks, enjoyed it. Thanks for the hint !). We did a specialised tour in which we saw all the different parts of this huge dam, a unique cooperation between Paraguay and Brazil. Wearing a safety helmet and other PPE ... read more

Natal - 24th April We wake up very tired as our flight landed late in Natal at 2am. We had finally got to bed at 3am and needed to be up early as we are going to explore the sand dunes today. We are picked up by George in his open top beach buggy at 9am. There are already a couple in the buggy so its a big squeeze on the back seat to fit 3 people in! This couple are very sweet and are on their honeymoon, bless! We speed off towards the sand dunes, there are several kilometres of them stretching away from Natal. Today we explore lots of them and visit several beaches. Once out of Natal we have to cross the river on a ferry. After this someone can sit on ... read more

With 1 week left in Brasil and indeed South America, it was definetely time to get into holiday mode, relax and unwind. We found a lovely place to stay in Natal with all you can eat breakfasts a swimming pool and the beach just a few steps. The beach was very nice, lots of people selling everything from CD's, jewellery, drinks and of course barbecued food, clothes and one guy had a stall with mannequins wearing dresses (the mannequins not the guy). The weather was hot, applying spf40 and you would still get burnt, the cool sea was a welcome relief. Natal was looking like the perfect place to finish, offering everything you could want from a week's holiday and with the second cleanest air in the world (second to Antartica) what more could we ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio Grande do Norte » Natal March 23rd 2007

As I woke up on the morning of the 21st March, I had no idea I wasn´t going to bed again for another 40 hours as I have my most interesting night in Brazil yet. I had a lot of fun, and yet not so much fun, a completly random night which ends in myself and 3 other Australians being forced to leave Brazil within 3 days. So sit tight and read on as I tell you about the night I got arrested in Brazil. I had spent most of the day hanging out at an airconditioned shopping centre, got a "pay by the kilo" lunch and the got worst haircut of my life. We also met this awsome Brazilian guy Luiz, who had travlled to Australia, spoke really good english, worked at the tourist information ... read more

As the title suggests, I find myself saying this sentance a lot, "Do you have extra large?", as my fat ass does not fit into tiny brazilian bikini bottoms. Maybe its also a hint that I shouldn't be wearing them at all, but I love being stubborn and i finally found a pair of bikini bottoms that fit me, Hooray!! (Please rejoice with me). Ummm... i just realised that I failed to recover this whole blog when the crash happened... oopps 2/10/2007... read more

Hello all Pria de Pipa is yet another beach town on the northeast coast of Brazil, as like all the others it is amazing. In the old Lonely Planet it is described as a bit more upmarket Jeri. I wouldnt say that it is more up market just a bit more modernised. The weather here has been so much beter than Jeri so I have enjoyed it in that way more. After leaving Jeri we got an eight hour bus from Fortaleza to a city called Natal, from which we got a bus to here. After we got off the bus we started to walk down towards the high street when a guy called Ray showed us to a pousada, we thought that it was fine and so decided to stay there. Since then though we ... read more

Beautiful Beaches South America » Brazil » Rio Grande do Norte » Pipa By Liz and CristianoMarch 8th 2007Liz Reid-Baumel Next Stop Natal and the surrounding beaches. Dunes, Red Sand, tropical beaches, and aqua waters. We wouldn't recommend Natal for more than a stop off to get you to the beautiful beaches in the South of Natal. We ended up using Praia de Pipa as our home base because we fell in love with the area. The town is an international hot spot of mostly Europeans and there are many amazing beaches to explore all around Pipa. ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio Grande do Norte » Natal February 21st 2007

It has been six days some may say way too long but with the craziness of carnaval and booking hostels and my rapid travelling through brazil it has been a welcomed change of pace. I tried to stay in Macieo but it failed dismally when i couldn´t find a place to stay... so since salvador it has been a 8 hour bus ride to Macieo which was extended by four hours as the bus broke down then 12 hours walking around the beatiful beach area in Macieo with my bag (and stupidly my camera locked in the bus station locker). i did manage to get one of the bus station for anyone interested and to prove that i have been there haha yes i was bored! it was then another overnight bus ride to Natal... this ... read more

Day 31 - Day 46 Natal Natal, the capital of Rio Grande de Norte, is a modern and clean city in the north of Brazil, famous for its sand-dunes, with the main attraction being beaches rather than museums! It is a 22 hour bus ride north of Salvador, and the people and culture differ greatly. We stayed in Ponta Negra, the tourist area of Natal where most people stay when they visit, 10 km from the centre of Natal. Natal translates as Christmas, and the city is characterised by statues of the three wise men on every corner. They have good shopping malls and nice restaurants here. One night, after being widely informed by many people including the locals, we went for our first Charcusserie (All you can eat meat place)! We prepped ourselves for the ... read more
