Hello all! I greet you happy but fluey on a warm Tuesday afternoon in Lençois. I´ve been sick for over a week now. I´m finding it damn near impossible to shake and I don´t know why - maybe the Brazilians have a stronger strand of flu here? It´s probably just yet another thing that I´m not used to about living abroad, like insects and odd fruits and the weather... I could do with taking some days off the properly recuperate, but the chances of that are slim to none, seeing as I´m now the only volunteer at the project. Work is extremely tiring. I have had to implement a kind of points system with one of the groups just to get through the hour with them, so its tough going. Fortunately the rest of the groups ... read more

Hello all! Sorry about the lack of contact, life has been hectic here lately and I´ve not had time to pop down and use the internet, so here is a bit of an update. Life here is still going well. The weather has improved massively and taken my mood with it. I´m always so much happier when its sunny outside - and believe me, Brazilian sunshine tops it all! The job is hard and has just got harder. The other volunteer living in the house, Jude, has had a falling out with Olivia and left today. And Gabriel, who worked just the afternoons, has had to increase his hours spent on his doctorate so will no longer be working. Which means its just little old me, all day everyday, and living in the house alone again. ... read more

Hi all! Another exciting week here in Lençois. The kids decided to behave themselves a little better, you´ll be glad to here. We have a new volunteer, who is now living with me in the project house. He is a 28 year old from Recife in the north of Brazil. He is really nice, but for now I reserve my judgement as to how well the housing situation will work. At least he is a clean freak, so I don´t have to housetrain him! Things continue to go well for me here, and my Portuguese is coming on in leaps and bounds. I´m even getting some of the local slang down to a tee! The highlight of my week was a trip to the nearby town of Igatu - a pretty little place with only 400 ... read more

Hello all! Sorry for the silence over past weeks, I´ve been very busy here but I´m alive, well and happy! I celebrated my 21st birthday on the 2nd October and my friends here threw me a surprise party on the banks of the river, with cake, candles, balloons and a few caipirinhas too! I´d had a lovely day with the kids, Friday is games day so we played a big game of twister and it was all nice and relaxed. Two of my friends also took me out for dinner so I have been really spoilt lately! Work as been tough too. I´m definately past the honeymoon period with the kids - I´m not a novelty anymore so they don´t always behave themselves as they should. One of them bit me the other day. But generally ... read more

We went on a 7 hour bus ride into the interior of Bahia to Chapada Diamantina. It is a place where diamonds used to be mined. It's in a semi-arid climate, there are plateaus, waterfalls, caves, etc. I also went to a little community that was started by runaway slaves. They are a small community with 400 people and 40 houses. Very poor fishing community. It is 25 km to Lencois. Lencois is a small town, I believe it used to be a place to trade in diamonds and slaves, now it is mainly a tourist town since diamonds are illegal to mine there. So, we climbed a plateau and there is a cross at the top. Then we went to the caves with stalagmites and stalactites. And then we went to a waterfall. Nice little ... read more

Lucky you! You'll get treated with a second blog entry today! Simply because I also wanted to put up pictures of the walk I did today. Yesterday, naturally, I was exhausted and did nothing as I had been checking in guests in the middle of the night. Today, however, I decided I would finally manage to reach the Sossego waterfall. I had already tried to reach it before, but by following the riverbed straight from the Ribeirão do Meio (the place with the natural tobogan), which made it extremely long. In addition, I didn't know the way, and when I tried the water level was really high which increased the difficulty considerably. Today, however, I went up to the Ribeirão de Cima with my boss, Chris, his girlfriend and her son. He had beforehand explained more ... read more

The day before yesterday, that is straight after our return from the failed attempt to reach the Michilla waterfall, the same group and guides went off to explore the Lapão cave. By then I had got to know much better the other members of the group, who were truly interesting and entertaining caracters: Filipe, from Portugal, had grown up in Namibia and had also studied in Germany; Ines, his Slovenian girlfriend; and Camila, their Norwegian travelling companion. They were all working in an orphanage in a small town near Rio de Janeiro, facing much tougher working conditions than I have over the last few months. Before reaching the Lapão, our guide opened up a trail with his machete to an area I had never heard of, and as far as I know, few locals have knowledge ... read more

Yesterday, I left on what was supposed to be a 2 to 3 day trek into the national park. It started well, with a decent amount of sun, and a lovely shower under the 35m high Capivarí waterfall. However, it rained quite a bit during the night, and much more in the morning, with no end of it in sight, so we decided it would be better to backtrack. I enjoyed it though. The capivarí was a lovely waterfall. I had taken a video of me under it, but internet here is simply too slow to upload it (I once heard from some tourists that they had found faster internet on islands in Papua New Guinea). I was with the same guide as my last trek, Feijão, who made great food for dinner. It is quite ... read more

I'm back! Unfortunately, the walk only lasted 3 days, as a couple in the group had to return early to São Paulo early. Pity, but it was worthwhile nonetheless. It was quite testing, actually. Long walking days, including large parts walking on very steep slopes of mud or wet clay, offering numerous opportunities for falling on your backside which I took full advantage of. We also had to cross river rapids with slippery stones, which was not too easy. Undoubtedly the most annoying rainforest feature though was the 'capim navalha' (I think I'm writing it correctly), a plant with long, sharp leaves which cuts your arms and legs as your walk around the forest. Luckily, it didn't rain too much, but the combination of tropical rain during the night and ligth drizzle during the day meant ... read more

I should really feel ashamed of my current blogging performance. My latest entry was on the 31st March, and was really uninformative. I will do my best to make up for it. I am still truly enjoying Lençóis. Its small size allows one to meet many of its inhabitants in a short period of time and to soon call it home, whilst its cosmopolitanism (a large part of the population came from other parts of Brazil or from ‘o exterior’) makes you feel connected to outside, makes you feel no different from many of the locals. My work at the pousada has evolved progressively. Initially, it merely involved translating standardized email responses, trekking information and website information into French and English. Next, I demonstrated some of my excel skills in the hope that it would extend ... read more
