After travelling back down the coast to Salvador I went inland to a small village called Lencois (not the same one as before- about 600km west of Salvador) which is on the edge of Parque National Chapada Diamantina which is national park in the mountainous region which an area larger than the Netherlands- it has mountains, swaps, valleys, gorges, waterfalls, jungles, caves, natural swimming pools and water slides. I went with the intention of doing a two day trek into the park but I ended up hiring a guide and doing 6.5 days with three lovely Isreali girls that I met on the bus. And although I have neve been so tired/filthy/achey/blistered/bruised/cut/grazed and generally exhausted I definitly think that it is the bvest place/experience that I have had since arriving in Brazil- I absolutly loved it! ... read more

Today I took a tour with a jeep to several nice places in Lençois. First we went to a very nice waterfall, with red water (because of iron), where we swam around a little. Then we went to a big cave with stalactites and stalagmites, which was very nice. Then we went to another place, where we swam around, then saw a grotto with crystal blue water (because of magnesium). Then we went up to a famous mountain here, and saw some great views. All in all, a fun day.... read more

I arrived in Lencois today, after spending a little more time than I planned in Salvador. Yesterday I went on a tour of Praia de Forte, where there is a sea turtle conservation project. I saw some turtles, and some sharks and other fish, and then spent a few hours on a nice beach. Also, I did a little more capoeira and had fun in Salvador. I am going to stay in Lencois a few days (it´s a nice place to spend Easter), seeing some nature (there´s nice waterfalls and grottos around here), and then head to Morro de Sao Paulo. From there I go back to Salvador, fly to Rio (hopefully all my luggage will arrive), and after 2 days in Rio fly home. See you all soon. ... read more

Three days of trekking, sunbathing and swimming in pools and under waterfalls. It was wonderful! Lencois is a 6 hour bus ride from Salvador. We took the 23.30 departure and arrived at an awful 5.30 am! Luckily our room in the hostel was available and we were able to catch up on some sleep. Day One We walked 4km or so each way to some natural swimming holes and water slides. It was fantastic. The water was cool and deep enough to swim in. Sliding down the slide was a bit bumpy and not advisable without your specs so Trish missed out. She also missed out on the bruises! Our map to get there was very accurate, but the waypoints seemed a bit sketchy at first: "Steep Up", "Big Building", "Yellow Wall"! In the evening we ... read more

Due to a before unknown sinus infection, Sarah was in tremendous pain during each of the three descents, but she made it to Salvador, incredibly tired and sneezing at every opportunity. We eventually made our way to an air conditioned room at the Hostelling International. I then went out and bought ourselves quite possibly the most expensive falafel plate ever at the Lebanese Restaurant next door. She then slept, and slept. We had to move ourselves to the Pousada (guesthouse) across the street, where Sarah slept for a few more days, and recovered from her illness. I explored the Pelourinho (the old city of Salvador) and helped Sarah recover. While we spent five nights in Salvador, we really only needed to spend one. While the Pelourinho is charming, unique, and full of music and life, ... read more

Well, the end of our trip is definitely in sight now and it is getting harder and harder to keep Andi off the beaches! This is my last chance, the town of Lencois and the national park of Chapada Diamantina, an outdoor hiking mecca six hours inland from Salvador. When we arrived in the town in the afternoon we were fairly mobbed by touts and guides offering us tours and services. It is all very friendly, but it gets wearisome to not be able to just wander along and check out the places you´ve already chosen from the guide book. Still, using the well-honed technique of leaving Andi in a cafe with the bags while I ninja´d unburdened through the shadows, we managed to get a room in a lovely place (who´s name I have totally ... read more

Lencois is a fabulous tiny town that evolved when diamonds were discovered in the nearby Chapada Diamantina National Park around 1800. I arrived on my own at 4am in pitch dark after a sleepless 6 hour bus ride from Salvador and for the first time since arriving in Brazil felt completely safe. The town itself has so much charm and is set on a river with waterfalls and fabulous rock formations including a natural waterslide - fun! The nearby National Park has some amazing features including several caves, underwater rivers and a fabulous blue grotto so clear it´s impossible to tell where the water begins. Our tour group took a snorkel in the blue grotto, definitely not for you claustrophobic types out there but again the clarity and colours in the water were truly beautiful. A ... read more
