12/12 Following on from the trekking and a couple of adventurous days for Tasha and Amy, we decided to have an indoor day - a decision aided by the rain. We got up late, read our books and hung at the hostel - Pousada Daime Sono. It's a pretty worn hostel and is run by Rodrigo, a well-known guy about town who has done nothing but make us feel welcome since we arrived - he also has a dog called Tatu, who, even for someone like me who doesn't like dogs, ir pretty darn cute. We watched the Silence of the Lambs (as you do) and Rodrigo and his friend kindly cooked us Gailinha Caipira - stewed country chicken with vegetables, it was probably the best meal we have had since we arrived in South America. ... read more

so we arrived at our hostel in the early hours of the morning and promptly fell to sleep, really sound of the owner rodrigo as techincally we had not paid for the beds. after a couple of hours of kip, rosie decided to head out on an over night trek into the wild. obviously i was not up for this, especially when over breakfast one the guides began to talk about the snakes he would go out to find, it seems this is some local past time but it freaks me right out! rosie headed out and me and tasha decided to have a wonder around the village and then just see what to do. after sucessfully managing the ATM seriously in brazil its like doing the kypton factor to get money out of the things. ... read more

10&11/12 We took the night bus to Lençois to save on a nights accommodation and so that we could make the most of our time in Chapada Diamantis, a national park in which Lençois is the tourist town. We were knackered when we got on the bus but still failed to sleep really through the night - the air conditioning was freezing, Brazilians were snoring and the coach was generally uncomfortable... not the best start! Still, we arrived in Lençois and were guided to our hostel - Pousada Daime Sono - and the guy let us get into bed which was kind of him - got a couple of hours in before getting up for breakfast. Chapada Diamantis is beautiful and a mix of terrains - some of it almost jungle like, as a consequence there ... read more

I had a fantastic time relaxing in salvador, the city had everything i love beaches, football, music, dancing and of course beautiful people! The hostel we stayed in was like a home and the guy that ran it was russell a manchester bloke so he became our source of information throught out the stay, the language barrier is still pretty hard at times, i find myself having a mental block when ever i attempt any sort of portuguese. However i must try and crack a few phrases by the end of this month. The hostel was great for meeting people, it was pleasant to meet such an assortmont of people, we were the only brits bar the boss and it was interesting to debate at dinner over our free caphrinas! We were really lucky that during ... read more

After a very early morning arrival in Lencois (at approx 5.30am) we were led to our hostel and given beds to rest our weary heads. We awoke about 2 hours later, and there was a bit of a mad rush with Rosie deciding to head off on a 2 day trek. This left me and Amy (dumb and dumber) to fend for ourselves. Not being so great with the Portugese ourselves, we decided to take it relatively easy, and following advice from a girl we met in our previous hostel, we asked for directions to a nearby natural waterslide. The owner of the hostel (Rodrigo) led us up the cobbledy streets (it is a gorgeous little town with houses of all different shapes, sizes and colours) and with a few basic directions off we trotted. He ... read more

Hello all, It's Tal again. We left Porto Seguro (after a few days in Trancoso), and arrived at Salvador de Bahia at 0630 only to find out that we have a bus to Lencois in less than 20 min. Great Connection! A "short" drive of 6 hours (after 12 hrs night drive..) and we are at Lencois. Lençóis is a small city in the state of Bahia in Brazil, with only 9000 inhabitants. The town has a well-preserved colonial atmosphere, laid back people and a charming location amidst hills and tropical forest. Lencois is the starting point for treks into Chapada Diamantina, the most famous National Park of Brazil. “Chapada” is a Brazilian word that means a region of steep cliffs, usually at the edge of a plateau. “Diamantina” refers to the diamonds found there in ... read more

Hi everyone! Sorry its taken so long, I´ve been so madly busy. Hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and that you have a Happy New Year there in the cold. Right, its going to be brief I´m afraid! Ever since Madelaine arrived things have been a massive whirl of excitement and bustle. I went to meet her in Salvador - which is a really horrible city and one I´ve been spending too much time in lately what with visas and picking up and dropping off my wonderful sister. Then we came back to Lençois and I itnrduced her to all my friends and showed her all my favourite places. We did a trek to the beautiful, incredibly peaceful waterfall of Sossego and my friends also took us to several of the other beauty spots surrounding ... read more

Hi all! Sorry, very lazy of me to miss another week, but as you all know I´ve been having a pretty hard time being here with everything going on at home. I´ve wanted so much to be there with you all, especially as things haven´t been easy here either. One of the kids had been stealing from me and all in all things were getting rather on top of me. But, you´ll be glad to hear, things are looking up. 1) We have a new volunteer, an English guy who seems really committed to the project, he speaks good portuguese and is really nice. So that´s a huge step up. 2) We have blackboards now - might seem like nothing, but I´ve been trying to get it sorted for three months and life is sooooooo much ... read more

Ok, so I know its been ages since I last wrote, but life here has been crazy. I went on a trek called Grutas, where I went to a waterfall, a pitch black cave full of stalactites and stalagmites (I´m sure I´ve spelt those wrong) of varying shapes and sizes, went snorkling in the bluest water you´ve ever seen and then climbed the poster child Morro do Pai Inacio, the heart of the Chapada. It was an awesome day, despite getting eaten alive by mosquitos. Work is difficult as ever, I´ve been really tired and stressed with it lately, but a group from the US came last Monday to volunteer and they cleaned the whole project and helped me with lots of tasks so that was amazing. Joana, one on the old volunteers, is back for ... read more
