Ola, The bus ride from San Pedro de Atacama was long but beautiful! We rose up and into the Altiplano at approximately 5000 metres before continuing on to the Argentinian border where we had to wait for a painfully long time because three of the four men working there were too busy checkig facebook. When we finally got to show a border guard our passports, the woman we had was slamming with the stamp down with such force that we were surprised she was not putting a hole in the table. We continued along the road and went past some very pretty lakes before entering some mountains. At this point the mountains became a canyon that we sliced our way through as we ascended to the summit of the mountain on the otherside. There were plenty ... read more

Efter godt ... read more

¨Travel is the best form of education. Personal encounters with people who are different from ourselves make us feel more sympathetic. Intolderance often arises from ignorance of another person´s needs and way of thinking.¨ So says my little book of Buddhism that was randomly gifted to me in Chinatown, Singapore by someone who assumably thought I looked like I needed help... But I´m inclined to agree... But thus far, still under two weeks into my three month excursion through South America, I must confess that I have felt very much on the periphery out here. And I think it can be attributed to one factor... Language. And the problem is mine and very much an English one. Not Spanish. As someone who grew up in the Home Counties, a part of the world where many people ... read more

Arriving into Salta late after our epic journey from Mendoza we were left little time to decide what to do and see while there. Not having read much about Salta beforehand we quickly consulted our guidebooks and asked our hostel owner what to do. After quickly checking into our hotels we headed for the main street with all the tourist agencies. After visiting several we finally decided on two day trips to Cachi and to Humauacha. With little time left in the day we decided to grab some food and head up to the look out over the city. Unfortunately we had arrived on Argentina's childrens day. So the place was full of kids running about and rides etc. Due to the massive queue at the cable car to the lookout we were left unable to ... read more

Villazon was a bustling town, made prosperous for being cheaper than its Argentinian neighbour La Quiaca therefore more popular for thrifty tourists. Avoiding the numerous shoe, textile and cake shops that lined the route to the border, we changed our remaining Bolivianos into Pesos and completed the crossing, waiting for 30mins on the Argentinian side for our entry stamp (strangely, no entry form though - first country not to have one). We followed the straggling line of tourists walking to the bus station in La Quiaca and were dismayed to find that the next bus to Salta (that we could see - the station was rather a melee of offices and locals) did not leave until 8pm - in 4 hours time. This was doubly disappointing as the journey was only scheduled to be 7-8 hours ... read more

Upon arriving in Salta, Argentina, I was definitely ready to return to Buenos Aires and return home. However, it took only a day for me to fall in love with the city. The people there were as relaxed and laid back as the people I found in my travels to Uruguay. Perhaps them being one of the farthest cities from Buenos Aires helps. Unlike the people in Buenos Aires or Rosario, the people from Salta took everything lightely and were never rushed with anyone, especially those who spoke little or no Spanish. Our first day there was full of fun as we simply walked the city. Though none of us had any sleep the night before as we were on a bus and worried that we might miss our connection, we still found the energy to ... read more
