Having been foiled in my attempts to get to Santiago de Chile by the unforseen happenstance of an earthquake, I found myself once more in Argentina, where Luke, Ana, Andreas and I had all booked seats on a bus from Bariloche to Mendoza. For Luke, Ana and Andreas, this got them to within a six hour bus ride of Santiago, from where they had booked flights to Easter Island. I on the other hand was using Mendoza as a waypoint on my journey north to Salta, up in the north west corner of Argentina. Why Salta? I'm glad you asked (even if you hadn't). Salta was close to San Pedro de Atacama, in Chile; one of the starting points for a tour of the Salar de Uyuni (a giant salt flat on the southern edge of ... read more

I landed in Buenos Aires, feeling the air of familiarity wash over me as I caught a taxi back into San Telmo. After another night enjoying the best night life Palermo had to offer I boarded a night bus which whisked me away to the north east corner of Argentina and the city of Salta. Salta is a very agreeable city hemmed in by wonderful green hills with a pretty colonial centre. The 18 hour bus journey had dropped me in Salta early in the morning and I had to walk for about 10 minutes in the blistering morning heat to get to my hostel, which was conveniently located one block from the main square. The city is quite vast and is the principle settlement in the north-east of Argentina. The colonial centre however is quite ... read more

Salta is in the north of Argentina and is surrounded by lush green mountains. The city had a lovely feel to it and seemed to be more civilised than Mendoza - but maybe it just seems more Mediterranean. In town, there´s a gorgeous deli which sells all sorts of hams and cheeses and chocolates and boozes. There is a plaza in the middle, and around it are a bundle of cafes and restaurants. There´s a teleferico (cable car) from a park in the city up to the top of a hill, from where there are some fabulous views. I didn´t do that much in Salta except work on my translation, fight with Student Loans, and eat. I had my last Argentine steak in Salta and it was delicious - and lots of lovely Malbec. I decided ... read more

Na ... read more

I finally made it to Salta and have more than two pesos in my pocket! I got into a hostel and ran into a girl that is in my program that I have happened to run into about three times this summer- the border of Peru and Bolivia, La Paz and now Salta. Small world! Salta is beautiful, I now understand why they call it ¨Salta La Linda¨. The plaza is a huge grassy space full of fountains and statues that is surrounded in cobblestone streets, outside cafes and pedestrian malls (that I have fully taken advantage of!). I have been soo good about not shopping throughout all of my travels, well, my self control came to a screaming halt yesterday! I started out just buying myself a Mate (the tea that everyone drinks here in ... read more

As we approach our exit from the great country of Argentina, we reflect upon the highlights and the top tens of places seen and things done, people met and personal victories won. Little did we expect that we would be embarking upon a city of profound depth that would rise to become one of the pinnacles of our experience here in Argentina. We arrived in Salta and settled into Hostel Yatasto; a very friendly hostel that made a convenient home base to explore the surrounding streets, countryside and hills of this cultural Northwestern mecca. If I have one regret, it is that we did not spend more time here. At this point I would like to make a quick note about ageism. Ok, not that we actually encounter any serious discrimination based on age, but ... read more

My sister has told me that she gets tired just from reading our blog entries; we cram so much travel and activity in such a short amount of time! I could see her point, although we tried to fit in a few down days where we could. Argentina was where we really lost control, although we were just as bad (if not worse) in New Zealand later on. After leaving the sun-drenched relaxed atmosphere of El Cafayate, we went nuts jig-zagging the country, with a jaunt to Chile thrown in. We didn't settle down until we hit Bariloche almost a month later. About a quarter of those nights were spent on buses or planes. Looking back at our travel calendar, I get exhausted just thinking about those times and trying to write about it all (months ... read more

Welcome to Argentina. Salta is a nice city with a comfortable feel but not too much to do. During our time in the city, we took a small tour which involved a nice ride around in an open bus for a couple hours. The bus was cheap and we were able to see several churches, monuments, statues and other important buildings so was worth the wait (it wasn´t an arranged tour so we had to wait at the bus stop for it to come around). We also took a ride up the Teleférico (which was over-priced and not worth the money). We had a couple nice meals at a fancy steakhouse and Braeden was really happy to finally have a good piece of meat (the steak was about the size of his face!). We also saw ... read more

Finished up Bolivia with this out of this world landscape of the Uyuni salt flat 3 day 4x4 tour. Leaving from Uyuni a small town in a 90´s toyota land cruiser over the desolate landscape for three days with a canadien/Mexican married couple and 3 Argentines. Set up to be an exiting time, luckily Antonio from Chiapas region translated alot of the tour for I. We started in the train cemetary where old rusty trains go to be forgotten (exept by tourist) Then off to the 8000 sq. mile Uyuni salt flat quite a sight, not possible without sun screen and a good pair of shades. Looked like snow in the middle of one of the driest deserts in the world. From there a quick stop of a once island with many cactus and then ... read more

Arrival in Argentina was not without a long 24 hours of travelling from SUcre in Bolivia but it seemed worth it when we saw beautiful blue skies and and locals wearing shorts and vests again. The Altimeter on my watch went under 1000 meters for the first time in over 2 and a half months which was interesting, I was starting to get used to the climate at high altitude. When our bus finally stopped the clouds opened up and began to pour rain to our surprise. We were camping unfortunately so we jumpde in a taxi and made our way to the camping site. It was creeping up to 7.30pm and the daylight was beginning to seep away so we knew we had to be quick. We arrived in a huge downpour but luckily when ... read more
