Hello all, I left the tango, clubs and sophistication of Buenos Aires behind and have headed up country, first to Iguazu Falls, thence to Salta. I was a little sad to leave, having made some great friends, none of whom, sadly were coming this way, but also excited to hit the road again. It's been wonderful so far, it feels like I've only just arrived I'm so excited by everything. You may not have heard of Iguazu Falls, but I don't know how they aren't more famous. Higher than Niagara they aren't one cascade but 150 stretched across nearly 3 kilometres of sub-tropical rainforest, divided by small islands, with trees hanging precariously onto the edges. They are beautiful, but also tremendous- easily the most awesome thing I've ever seen. There are walkways to allow you into ... read more

Hello people, Just a quick blog for Northern Argentina. After the incredible Bolivia tour (see previous blog) we had a nightmare 2 day trip on trains, foot and buses across the border to the city of Salta. Salta is a really beautiful city and it was nice to be back in Argentina which really has a feeling of continental Europe about it. We celebrated being back in civilisation again by heading out to one of Saltas famous parilla (meat restaurant) and gorged ourselves on amazing food before sampling Saltas pretty decent bars and night life. Salta like all South American cities is built around an amazing square which is perfect for people watching with a cold beer. The region around Salta is famous for two things, one is oranges which grow everywhere the square is lined ... read more

Valle del Elqui Na ... read more

We ventured on another nice long bus ride from Iguazu to a smallish city in the north of Argentina called Salta. There is not a lot to Salta except a small old town, good steak and wine and lots of motorbikes. This was our first sight of the crazy motorbike riding that happens in South America - the most concerning bike we saw had a guy driving and a woman on the back holding a brand new baby!! We spent on afternoon up the top of one of the mountains surrounding the city admiring the view and watching the tiny sparrows plummet towards the ground after insects. The people in this city were so so friendly and did not seem to stop grinning !! One thing that was special about Salta was the abundance of sandwich ... read more

Going North When in Tandil, a place South East of Buenos Aires, we Were invited to come along to a gathering of gauchos who would take part in a yearly parade, showing off their horses and attire, very much in the way we had seen in the museum/silversmith in San Antonio the Areco. It was a hot day and entering the place our attention was caught by the quantity of beef and wors that was being braaied for lunch. Not your “big” South African set-up, but much and much bigger in scale. We had seen chicken being braaied in another place on a bed, about 1,5x 2,5 meter with glowing coal underneath, so we were prepared to look at our South African way as not the ultimate way in braaing. But this was BIG. Anyway, we ... read more

Salta la linda, meaning Salta the beuatiful. Named this I suppose because of the lovely colonial buildings and plazas and the way it is surrounded by the lush foothills of the Andes. Salta is part of what was the Southern most reaches of the expansionist Inca Empire about 500 years ago, before it was toppled by the Spanish. It is also home to some of the most interesting archealogical museams in Argentina and a base for tours into the northern villages reaching into Bolivia. I stayed there three days. Originally I was there to get my bearings and check out the churches, plazas and museams but I soon met some nice Argentinians at my hostel and hung out with them, drinking mate, eating empanadas and drinking beer. Gabrielle and Jose were two 21 year old friends ... read more

domingo, 2 de mayo As seems to be customary these days we arrived in Salta early doors and slept through at our hostal (Hostal por Siempre) until lunchtime. Salta itself is not especially large and is mainly used as a port for day trips to Cafayate and other surrounding mountainous excursions. These mostly start before the sun rises so today we climbed Cerro Bernardo, a 300m high mount (total 1500m as we are 1200m above sea level already) displaying the city before us. Climb is perhaps the wrong word. Wrong because we caught the Teleferica. What? We climbed all the others. After 5 minutes in the Teleferica we wished we had this one too. We initially enjoyed the translation of the safety warnings telling us not to "extract our arms" and that the "cabin is yours" ... read more

Here we are in Salta, all safe and well and I have retrieved my trusty? KLR from the moto electrician, they found a broken wire somewhere under the tank, so I can only trust them that everything will be OK. We had an uneventful ride from Cafeyate to Salta, doing the tourist bit and checking out the large dry waterfalls that have eaten into the rock, they must be a wonderful sight in the rainy season. Today we will ride a new route to Permamaca for the night, as tomorrow is going to be our really BIG day. We could not get any accommodation any closer to the border, so it adds another 100 km to an already big day, as we head into Bolivia. It looks like we will loose Gerardo for a couple of ... read more

The 23 hour bus journey was not the most enjoyable aspect of the trip so far but it was not as bad as it sounds. We stopped quite a bit and had some food from the bus stations and also has some food served on the bus. There was a toilet on board and although it was emptied once it was nearly unusable by the time we got to Salta. I spent three days or so here and in the surrounding area. Salta is in the North east of Argentina but one of the first cities to be estalished by the Spanish and the colonial architecture is much more in evidence here. Baroque churches, white painted buildings with arcades attached or upstairs balconies with wooden balustrades. There is also a cable car which you can take ... read more
