Op ... read more

Driving through Haast Pass we stopped to check out waterfalls (they are everywhere). Entering Wanaka we were amazed. I mean, when we both think of places we want to live we basically list everything that Wanaka has. Green grass, huge turquoise blue lake, mountains galore, and lots of pasture land with lambs running around. We didn't think such a place could exist, but we were wrong. We hiked up Roy's Peak through sheep and lamb country to see the views and they were stunning. We love Wanaka. Maybe we'll start a sheep station here. The next day we drove into Mt. Aspiring Park (the ride itself made would have made the whole thing worthwhile) and hiked to see the Rob Roy glacier. We even got to see a Kea, which is the only alpine parrot in ... read more

We then traveled to Wanaka to meet up with friends and enjoyed the beautiful hiking opportunities on Lake Wanaka. From the main street, a stunning view of the lake and the misty mountains could be seen. After a day of small town festivals, and hikes, the weather turned and stormy clouds rolled in. Thankfully, we weren't too far from the car and quickly scooted back to our friend's house, where we could watch the storm over the lake. The following day, we visited New Zealand's Puzzle World, for a day of silliness.... read more

A Day In Wanaka The day started off pretty early and was busy trying to make the decision whether we'll be able to make it home or not due to bad weather approaching from the south. After studying Metflight and discussing with local pilots useful knowledge of the area, the decision was made that we would wait out the weather. We possibly could have made it out of Wanaka in the morning, however we felt the weather would have caught up with us and we didn't want to risk being stuck at a not so populated aerodrome! We used this time in Wanaka to our advantage and got to experience the local training areas, being much different to the ones back home. Ben managed to finished off his mountain flying in some "real" snow covered mountains ... read more

QN-WF After waking up to a great nights sleep at base backpackers, we headed off to explore the beautiful scenery and exciting things to do around Queenstown. We headed up the famous Skyline gondola and were met with 360 degree views of the city and surrounding lakes. After lunch we set off to the Wakatipu Aero Club to preflight and get a breif from the friendly locals. After briefing ourselfs, we contacted the tower to confirm that they were happy to have a student depart solo for the first time from QN to which they were happy with. We left on runway 23 with a Caldrona Ski Field departure, it was true what the CAA GAP Publication "In, Out and Around Queenstown" said about taking off on that departure with the mountain range being so close ... read more

Leider spuckte unser Kü... read more

New Zealand part 2 The drive from Abel Tasmin to Westport was a long and uneventful road, although the various things for sale by the side of the road kept Will in a constant state of excitement. We went to our first seal colony in Cape Foulwind (named, like many things on the coast, by Captain Cook) and stayed in an excellent campsite where we had the site and the beach to ourselves. We drove via Hokitika (where we had our first NZ cooked breakfast) to Franz Josef glacier. The glacier is one of only a handful in the world that is still on the move (about 2cm a day - still beating Will in a foot race!) and we stayed in the Rainforest Campsite (which FYI was pretty shoddy). Will strapped on his crampons and ... read more

We arrived to a cold and blustery day in Christchurch airport and picked up our car for the one day free rental we had booked. We quickly got on the road west through the mountains and towards our first stop at Arthur’s Pass. It was a beautiful journey as we winded our way through the mountains, the visibility wasn’t great with the cloud hanging low round the mountains and the rain but this kind of added to the scenery making look mystical and still very impressive. Arthur’s Pass the highest settlement in NZ and was very pretty if not a bit small and by this time we were in a cloud and the views were non existent. The accommodation was great though, we had a lovely little cottage with three bedrooms and a big living area ... read more

Ich... read more
