Moved out of the bach today, said farewell to Heidi, Andy and Maria as they headed off home. We were the last out of the bach. Headed into Wanaka and moved into the motel with Helen’s Parents. Went to puzzling world, I sat out the maze this time, we all did the illusions room Dinner was a hot chicken, and we then discovered we had made the local paper!!! There was a decent half page article describing the race and, more specifically, the headline was talking about me and having been helped to the finish by the crowds and my wife! Went on to quote Helen, and had a really lovely photo of us just after we had crossed the finishing line! Well cool. ... read more

Awake at 6.20am wide awake, called my mum and dad to tell them our news, and report back after the race. Also called my sister, too. We then pottered about a bit before the Post race awards ceremony, which was at 10.30am. Limped along there and afterwards I asked Felix, the chairman of the Challenge organization if he was going to the volunteers party so he could pass on my personal thanks to those who hung around so late to help me finish, and he said i’d be welcome to do so myself, please come along! Went to a café met up with everyone in there, Mark had to fly back today to be home for work on Monday. Came back home for a sleep and then headed into town for the volunteers party. I was ... read more

New Zealand South Island Part A: Queenstown Region It's been quite some time since we've last used the blog, in fact, probably pretty close to 2 years. However we've decided to make use of it again but more as a journal for our own keeping than to stay in touch with everyone, but feel free to read on. Much has changed since our trip to the US and return home through Europe – namely the birth of our son Patrick, so I think the manner in which we record our 'adventures' now will differ greatly. I expect that much of what we record will be watching Patrick's experiences and responses to encounters on our travels. This will probably bore some, but I'm sure it will make for great reading for Fiona and I in the years ... read more

We left Te Anau and headed north towards Queenstown arriving quite early as it was not too far and the roads were fairly quiet. As we approached the town, stunning Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountains came into view as we skirted the edge of the huge lake. The aptly named Remarkables and the Eyre Mountains form a breathtaking backdrop to this town which has become a popular tourist destination particularly for those seeking ‘adventures’ which has seen the town grow quite rapidly compared to other towns. We planned to stay in much smaller Arrowtown nearby as we had been recommended a campsite on the edge of the town by someone we had met in Oamaru. Arrowtown is just like being in a living museum, the feeling of being transported back to another time is instant ... read more

And the rain kept coming. Vicious winds drove sheets of rain crashing to the ground. I watched the rain pour in all evening and I heard it splashing onto the tin roof of the backpackers all night. The staff party led to much madness in the bar with a live band and much silly dancing but thankfully my bed was far enough away from it all that to allow for some sleep. This morning, it rained some more. The clouds did lift briefly as I was leaving Mt Cook but nowhere near high enough to expose the great mountain itself. So I reversed yesterday's 200km journey and landed back in Wanaka not having seen as much as one of Mt Cook's ridges. But I did enjoy being there - watching the ridgelines of the surrounding mountains ... read more

Day dawned cloudy but not as bad as predicted so optimism levels quite good. Breakfast on the front, stop at shop for more muesli bars (well, oaty slices, but close enough - forgot to tell you that one of the farmers I met on the Dart leg of the Cascade Saddle produces something like 85% of New Zealand oats, so now I quite like the idea that I probably know where the oats come from whenever I eat muesli / oat bars). And then I drive down to the road end. The road is fun - lots of dirt track and lots of fords as well as the odd bull to coax out of the way. Unfortunately, the cloud is also building. Rain comes and goes, some quite heavy which I don't mind really but the ... read more

A quiet night last night in Queenstown following the emergency purchase of some anti-histamines that all but put me to sleep. Of course, I pretty much instantly found the pills I'd brought with me after having bought a whole load - no change there. Collected hire car again this morning and drove over the bare and brown Cardrona range to Wanaka. Popped in to the DOC office for them to confirm that is going to rain from now until I leave which is a bit of a pain as I was hoping to get up high above the Matukituki valley tomorrow. Tomorrow afternoon actually looks the worst of the current weather (thunderstorms and low cloud) for ascents so I may need to postpone - will make a call in the morning I think. Been feeling exhausted ... read more

Rise early trying not to wake the German couple who decided to sleep in the main room despite the fact that I had the bunk room to myself. Need to get out early in the hope of completing the punishing ascent before it gets too hot (it's another clear day and the sun is bright). The challenge for the day: 1. Climb a Munro (nearly 4000ft ascent) with a 20kg pack on, reaching the Pylon (4 hours?) 2. Cross a wee glacial valley, fording a creek that may or may not mean wet feet, depending on how the day's melt is doing to reach the top of the Cascade Saddle and look down on 1000ft of sheer rock (1 hour?) 3. Hike down a massive glacial valley (the Dart valley), skirting the Dart glacier itself - ... read more

Transport arrives a wee bit late - the driver is sure he recognises me from a few years back which is possible but it's also quite likely to be one of my many twins he's actually thinking of (they get everywhere). Bumpy but fun ride to the road end - an interesting Austrian couple (he's actually Japanese but lives in Austria and he's wearing trainers) are sharing the trip - they're also heading over the saddle but are camping instead of using the huts. Road end to the hut in two hours through more agricultural land - sheep and cattle polluting the wilderness. Last night's rain has cleared and it is very warm but beautifully clear giving stunning views up to Rob Roy Glacier, Mt Liverpool (the hut still nestling up high, looking tempting) and Mt ... read more
