Day 12 – Friday 25th of March Before we left Queenstown we did had two more items to tick off our to-do list. The amazing indoor minigolf and Fergburger. A few days ago we noticed an indoor minigolf right across the road from our camp site and thought we’d inspect. It was just like you see in the movies, real American style minigolf. It had mechanical obstacles. Everything opened, closed, make noises, spaceships lifting off, mines exploding. Gondolas carried your ball to the top, through tunnels, over bridges, down rivers.....was AMAZING! Next stop was for lunch. We were NOT leaving Queenstown without trying the world famous in NZ – Fergburger! We were most definitely not disappointed. Matt had the Cock Cajun burger – a chicken burger marinated in a spicy Cajun marinade and served with the ... read more

I wanted to stay in Wanaka for 3 nights, but as I wanted to catch up to some of the group I only stayed one. Wanaka is a small town and not many things to do as it's a skiing town and it is still autumn. But the views over the lake were breath taking. I do wish i stayed longer and just relaxed reading by the lake or did some walks. We did head to Puzzleworld which had a maze and some 3d illusions. The illusions didn't interest me that much as I've seen them before. The maze was fun though we decided to go in at different times and meet up at the check points which were towers. The maze had to be completed in a certain order, so was fun watching the others ... read more

BEAUTIFUL views, right on a rocky beach, but tons of bees flying around my ouzo. Wanaka - an awesome slightly heady lake town filled with boutiques, bars, the coolest movie theater ive been to, hikes, and bike rides. Tarras - a 3 building town which is home of the most famous New Zealand sheep, Shrek Lindis Valley - a DoC free campsite at the location of an old gold rush hotel in ruins. Our last big night with tenty so it was partytime. ... read more

Thank you all so much for the messages - it is a very strange lot of emotions we are going through now - on one level we are trying to act normally and at the same time the news from Christchurch is still so harrowing. And we feel exhausted all the time. Our drive down here - we took 2 days and stayed in cabins in campsites - which were lovely. A little side trip down off the main road yesterday had us picknickning at the foot of Mount Cook- and the clouds cleared so we did see the summit. One of the effects of the Quake was a HUGE bit of the Tasman Glacier fell off into the feeder lake - and I think we could see the effects of that in Lake Punaki ( ... read more

Sunday February 20th When will I learn? The answer to life's problems aren't at the bottom of a bottle, they're on TV! ……. Homer S. The rest of the story. Before turning in Jo called the Menlove’s and asked that they call which she did about 11:30. Sounding a little out of it and not really apologetic she said she was booked for the night but did have my info somewhere. The next morning she called back, very apologetic explaining that she had in fact screwed up. Jo told her I would just be staying with her. Moving along… So Today Jo took me on a ride up the Matukituki River Valley. At the end of the road we took a short walk to the obligatory swinging bridge that leads to the start of the areas ... read more

Wanaka and Queenstown Saturday 12th Went for a walk along the Rob Roy track today but not quite as simple as it sounds. We had to drive 20 km on tarmac roads and then 30km on a dirt road to get to the start. The dirt track was falling apart and also included 7 fords which got fuller as the slightly rainy day went on. Fun! When we reached the start of the walk the wind was blowing hard along the valley which made it a little scary crossing the swing bridge at the start as it was swinging well before you even stepped on it. Made it though - to complete the excellent walk up the hill through woodland to the base of the Rob Roy glacier. Sunday 13th Headed from Wanaka to Queenstown over ... read more

The above panorama is from Jackson Bay looking back towards Haast 7th February - 13th February 2011 Its been hard getting motivated to write these blogs at the moment. Its not like we aren't doing anything – we are busy every day. Its just that travelling round our own country is so different than travelling somewhere else, somewhere different, that we don't really feel like we are on holiday. We certainly don't feel like tourists (though we don't like to think of ourselves as tourists wherever we go) as here we speak the same language, drive the same, use the same money (no need to worry about foreign currency transaction charges), the shops are the same, the food is the same. We are far from bored, we are loving the time away with Samara, loving exploring ... read more

Monday 6th December 2010 (Franz Joseph – Wanaka) Our coach pulls away and we’re subjected to the Good Mornin’ DVD again (although Richard had missed it yesterday morning with the extra night’s stay and had been annoying Joanne whistling it all day!). We arrived at Lake Matheson hoping for mirror views of Mount Cook, but as we made our way round to the vantage point the heavens open. Joanne managed to get a few quick snaps but Mount Cook was nowhere to be seen behind the mass of clouds. We hurried back to the start to avoid getting soaked and treated ourselves with a nice full English breakfast! Our last stop before crossing the Southern Alps was at Ship Creek, a nice beach but unfortunately plagued with sand flies. A quick trip up the tower to ... read more

From Frans Josef we drove down to the twin lakes of Wanaka and Hawea. The blue must be seen to be believed. Stayed in a DOC campsite called Kidds Bush Reserve. Our van backed on to Lake Hawea beach. From here we went to wanaka for an aftrenoon of canoeing and walking around. ... read more
