Our New Zealand adventure continued as we drove south from the glaciers past a very wet and wild Knights Point, and then cut east across a very snowy Haast Pass. The town of Haast is on the west coast and to access the east side of the Southern Alps we needed to drive up and across the Pass of the same name. With the weather as it was, the brilliant white snow made the scene look beautiful and very wintery. Due to the amount of rainfall over the few days before, there were a lot of very pretty waterfalls tumbling down amongst the white snow, gunmetal grey cliffs and green foliage. We were very thankful that it was a little late in the day and the snow had cleared from the road so that we didn’t ... read more

Hello, hope all is well back on the other side of the world. It's obveously quite a small world as we've bumped into loads of people from xscape the Castleford snowdome here in Wanaka. Which was quite handy for getting discounts on hire gear etc!! So we left Dunedin behind us and escaped back into countryside in the Taieri Groge railway. Phil wa sa little disappointed that the light wasn't very good for his photos - not sure when he turned so arty?? The trip is nice and there are some amazing views off the edge of cliffs where they just let you get off the train - health and safety at home would have a heart attack if they saw what they let you do here!!! We arrive in Wanaka to some cloudy rainy weather ... read more

It’s two days since my last haunted little missive and things have radically altered. Actually, that’s not true at all. After the latest camera debacle at Greymouth on the West Coast, I boarded the bus for Fox Glacier. I spent the whole journey chatting with the driver. This was because I wanted to sit in the best viewing seat. This is, naturally enough, the seat next to the driver at the front of the bus. The bus is a fifty-seater luxury bus. There are a total of nine passengers on board. Over the course of the next few days I am going to get this same seat three more times, and consequently find myself engaging in conversation with a total of four different drivers. The driver’s names were Dave, Maurice, Paul, and Ed. Dave told me ... read more

Well, it’s been a long time since I posted a blog entry. In fact, it’s been months since I started a blog entry that began “well, it’s been a long time since I posted a blog entry.” This is my third such start. It’s time for new tactics. My old blog entries weren’t really “blog entries”. They were a journal. Hopefully, I will find the time and the will to take the jumble of notes I have gathered on Sydney (any of my three visits), the East Coast of Oz, and Indonesia, and document the adventures. For now, though, a blog—which is to say, a log -a description of what I am doing. My loyal fans deserve something! Currently, I am in a coffee house in Wanaka, New Zealand. I’m listening to For Emma, Forever Ago, ... read more

We made our way to Wanaka and got there quite early. Dropped our stuff at the hostel and then we got dropped off out at Puzzling world. They have some cool illusion rooms and a room where you feel like you are slanted and your balance goes all wonky. They also have a two storey maze. Me, Julia (german) and Laurie (Netherlands) stuck together and we did the maze. You have to get to all 4 corners and up the towers and then get to the exit. We did the first 3 towers ok but the 4th was hard. We got stuck in one corner for what seemed to be forever! FInally got the fourth tower and made it out. We had to walk back to the hostel and then we walked around town for a ... read more

We arrived in Wanaka after a week or so of continuous travel around the south island, and decided to stop off here for a while and relax, staying four nights. We stayed in a fantastic hostel which overlooked Wanaka's picturesque lakes and mountains so it was a nice place to recharge our batteries. We did several walks, one up to the top of Mount Iron, which produced more impressive views of the region. We also spent lots of time wandering around the town and sitting by the lake reading our books. Wanaka itself is one of the most scenic and beautiful towns in NZ, as you can hopefully see from the pictures, although they don't really do it justice! We then moved on to Queenstown and again spent 4 nights, walking and relaxing in amongst the ... read more
