The clouds cleared so we thought we would attempt another peak called Mt. Fyfe. The grade was called easy/moderate in our book. SIKE!! If that is easy then I would like to see what they call hard. Maybe it was easy because it was on a road the whole way up, but it was also the world's steepest road. We figured out that we climbed 1000 feet a mile. The views were awesome though. The Kaikoura range was on our backside and the Pacific Ocean was on our front. After somehow making it back down we went to investigate the fur seal colonies. They were incredibly cute and smelled incredibly bad. I think that one of the layers in hell could be just having to sit in their stench for the rest of eternity. Musky with ... read more

After a fresh coffee at the beach camp the 5am start did not seem so harsh plus we were full of excitement about our potential dolphin encounter in the icy waters of Kaikoura. I was put at ease when we arrived at the dolphin encounter base and were issued with numerous items of thick, high quality dive gear. With a sleeveless wetsuit, wetsuit jacket with crotch strap (not the best look but soooo lovely and warm when in the water :-), booties, gloves and wetsuit hood - once we had the snorkel masks on - it was just our cheeks that were exposed and we were roasting and ready or action. After a short but very informative video we headed out to the launch area, climbed aboard a lovely 2 storey boat and headed out across ... read more

It was gloriously sunny, the water glassy and clear - perfect for an evening kayak. Kaikoura kayaks are a small, friendly family business ran by Matt and our guide or the next next few hours was Garry - a friendly kiwi chap - passionate about the ocean and very knowledgeable about the unique Kaikoura region and the marine, mammal and bird life living here. The Kaikoura peninsula has an unusually deep shelf close to land which makes it the best location for spotting a variety of marine life in New Zealand. There were 3 of us from the Flying Kiwi tour - 2 with some kayaking experience and one complete beginner. As we unloaded the double kayaks the sun glistened on the water and the mountains loomed above. With long paddle strokes cutting the water, in ... read more

After a short look around the pretty little village of Picton in the glorious sunshine I was greeted by Brett (Britt) and Holly. Brett - a friendly, laid back guy, mad on the outdoors has been guiding adventurers around his homeland by kayak, bus, bike and hike for years - keen to share his knowledge of New Zealand. Holly, the assistant guide is a super friendly, super enthusiastic, crazy kiwi who brings out the excitement and adventurer in everyone. Brett (Britt) and Holly are to be my Flying Kiwi guides for the next few weeks :-) We headed to the Sequoia lodge hostel to pick up more passengers - a varied bunch from 20 to 60 years including people from America, Germany, UK and Canada - they all seem up or a good time. We shared ... read more

Flight to Christchurch is on time and we even had time to invest in the business lounge before take off! Picked up hire car and we're driving out of the airport 20 minutes after landing. Two hours up state highway 1finds us in the small coastal town of Kaikoura. Very picturesque with snow capped mountains tumbling down to the sea (do mountains 'tumble'?) Extremely good meal at the White Morph restaurant (I'd recommend the seafood chowder ) & another excellent bottle of Cloudy Bay (of course! ) Early start the next morning (no time for breakfast ) as we have to be at the whale watch place at 7:15. The first doubts arose when the noticeboard suggested we buy sea sickness tablets from the gift shop. (which we did) A quick coach transfer took us to ... read more

Having A Whale of a time. Dunedin is a very favoured spot, sat at the top end of a long sheltered bay. It is also very hilly and out of the sun was pretty cold. I need to say in praise of the local New Zealanders that they are a hardy bunch, many of them wearing shorts 52 weeks a year, rain/snow or shine, seems that you are classed as a wimp if you have to revert to long trousers (puts me firmly in the wimpy class). At the end of the bay in which Dunedin lies is the Otago peninsula where at the tip of the headland is the world’s only mainland nesting colony of Albatrosses. Coughing up the £20 charge we took the guided tour which was conducted by a large Maori woman complete ... read more

Day two was our first real adventure. We drove 2.5 hours north along the coast to Kaikoura for our whale watching tour. The drive was scenic and beautiful. Kirsten tackled the job of driving on the left side of the road while Chester helped navigate. The landscape was filled with rolling green hills, hungry sheep, and bare wine vineyards. We did well managing the roads and made it on time to our destination, even when Kirsten pulled over because she thought she saw a ton of seals, it was only kelp. The tour was pretty full with all ages represented, but why someone would bring a two-year-old on a boat is beyond us. Chester took her Dramamine to ensure her breakfast stayed down, and it did! Victory! This was not so for many others. At one ... read more

Laura’s week in New Zealand – Part 2 (Wanaka & Kaikora) Day 3: Before heading out of Queenstown we visited the Kiwi sanctuary for our first close encounter. They house the kiwi’s in a shed with a glass viewing area, which is kept dark in the day and light at night allowing us a good look. They are bigger than we thought, with a long beak and whiskers; the female also lays eggs which are about a third of her size – ouch! We stopped off for some wine tasting and an amazing cheese board at Gibston Valley (they even had a yummy goat’s cheese for Tory so she could join in the cheesefeast!). We were slightly disappointed with the wine which was too oaky for our taste - check us out with our new found ... read more

Road Trip! Rosalie and I planned a trip to the eastern coast of the south island, to Kaikoura, known for its whale watching and dolphins - Rosalie's favourite creatures! Kaikoura is a bit of a fisherman's town, not much more than green hills, cliffs, boats and whaling statues. By the ocean front, there was this walkway that goes through arches made of whale bones. In the parking lots, sea lions could be found lounging. Kaikoura had the most beautiful sun rises! We jumped on a boat with our friends Charlotte and Sienna and went out to sea yesterday and watched for whales. One surfaced next to the boat, splashing water up into the air. It was magical! On the drive home, we stopped at the Moeraki Boulders to get a closer look at one of the ... read more
