An uncomfortable night’s sleep (must’ve been all those crossed limbs!) broken again and again (and again) by what had to be huge road-trains haring down Highway 1, just behind the campsite, was followed by the most beautiful sight. Sunshine, no rain, light winds and a clear view of the snow on top of the Kaikoura mountains. None of us dared think the best … but a short nip through the hole in the fence (NOT officially recognised) and across the railway to the Whale Watch office confirmed it. We would be going whale-watching – YIPPEE! A pootle around the gift-shop, a sniff of the wonderful fried breakfasts in the café (good option only to sniff these, as you’ll discover later) and a genuinely interesting introductory video and safety briefing and then we were on the coach ... read more

Another huge drive ... four and a half hours across the country to the pacific coast ... I am often seriously confused about N,S,E,W here ... such as why is the E coast(facing the Pacific) the colder one? Back-tracking from the Abel Tasman NP towards Nelson and then crossing the Marlborough wine plantations before heading into the grassy hills on the way down towards Kaikoura. Passed many beautiful wineries but decided not to stop given the mileage to be covered (oh … and the driving rain and gale-force winds probably swayed our decision). The Montana vineyard was especially impressive, stretching as far as the eye could see up into the foothills of the Kaikoura mountain range – well, as far as the cloud-bank at any rate. Perhaps it was the sheep, the rolling pasture over hills ... read more

Upon leaving Nelson we decided to try some of the local wines since we were driving through some nice looking vinyards so we dropped into Vines Village & tried some Bouldevines (leaving with two bottles of a nice Pinot Noir that was 2 for $20) then down the road to Domaine Georges Michel to try some more & discovered a very palatable Pinot Noir rose! We also found some tasty venison pies for lunch before heading down the east coast to Kaikoura stopping off at Kekerengu where Julian nearly left his shirt on the beach! Lovely black sands there & I got to test my new hairband created from a find in the scraps box of the quiting shop at Vines Village! Other brief photo stops also occured along the coast which was well worth the ... read more

Tuesday 15th November: Hi everybody, sorry for the long gap but I'm now sat at a computer that doesn't have a time meter on it. So can think a bit before I tap the keys. I'll try and pick up from where I left off after reaching the south island. Once off the ferry we were heading south east on highway 1 heading for Kaikoura. Drove through some small town like Blenheim close to Cloudy Bay and the Big Lagoon. Carried on south and passed along Lake Grassmere and further on to Wharanui. This is where the road meets the Pacific ocean, for mile upon mile we drove a long narrow winding passes with shear rock to our right and the sea to our left. We stopped when we saw a population of fur seals basking ... read more

We set off early driving through Blenheim, the centre of the wine growing region with over 40 wineries in the area although a little early to be sampling the wine!!!,. Crossing the ‘dry hills’ of the Marlborough ranges we headed towards one of the most spectacular coastlines of the South Island, the Kaikoura coast. The views were again absolutely stunning, mountains, hills and extremely rugged coastline. The road hugs the shore for about 50 km and there were many places to stop and see the native wildlife including New Zealand fur seals playing on the shores of the turquoise South Pacific Ocean. We stopped to watch a large group of adult seals on the shoreline and noticed a Department of Conservation sign, Ohau Stream Seal Pups and Waterfall walk that Natalie and Allan (the couple we ... read more

(Guys, Dave has managed to add some glow worm pics to the Waitomo caves entry if you want to go back and have a look). Wednesday 27th October: Beautiful drive from Omarama to Kaikoura (about 500 km but in the sunshine it didn't seem to take so long). We had a quick stop at Lake Pukaki with its backdrop of snow-capped mountains and arrived in Kaikouri at about 4pm. Guess what....we're staying at a backpacking lodge for 2 nights!!! It's actually really nice and has a hot tub and sauna (just concerned that one fellow dreadlocked resident might not have had a shower before jumping in the communal hot tub!! Grabbed take away fish and chips and an early night. Thursday 28th October: Up early to go swimming with dolphins. We are soooo lucky - it's ... read more

Kaikoura is the Whale Watching Town from NZ, unfortunately the Tours are too expensive. The first Night i slept on a nice Rest Area near the Town. The Beach was full of wood - Campfire Time. On the next Day i had my first Breakfast only in my T-Shirt without Jacket etc... Blue Sky and 20 Degress - YES it's getting Spring in NZ. The whole Day was awesome. I walked around the Peninsula of Kaikoura, Seals everywhere and crystal clear water. The second Night i slept in a small Campsite directly on the Ocean. On the 3th Day i walked a Bush Walk near the Town and leave the Town for my Roundtrip to the Arthurs Pass and back to Picton to do the Trek on Friday. ... read more

We've been driving up from Christchurch to Wellington after some beautiful days in the Banks Peninsula. It wasn't the first time, but we always forgot to look for the famous seal colony where loads of baby seals swim up a stream and play under a water fall. Well, here it is! Just north of Ohau Point the road widens a bit into a small car park and you can walk along the stream up to the waterfall. It's incredible, and it's no surprise that the place is becoming quite popular. You don't get to see something like that every day. It's definitely worth a stop, assuming is the right season!... read more

Hi! Well, we've been busily ticking off things to do over the last few days. We didn't go to the glow-worm caves but we did go to Milford Sound which was, as pretty much everyoe who's been here before said, amazing! We were lucky enough to not only see the beautiful fiord (not technically a 'sound', something to do with the receeding waters and glaciers) but we saw some Bottlenose Dolphins, New Zealand Fur Seals (not actually that rare but reasonably entertaining nonetheless) and a single Yellow-Eyed Penguin, the first of the season apparetly, which was waiting patiently on its own for the mating season to begin! The next day was a pretty intesive driving day, takig us from Te Anau to Haast. While all of the drive was picturesque the last bit, from Wanaka to ... read more

Hey! It's been a while... but I'm alive and well! I have tried to type this thing 2 times, each time the internet has messed up and erased most of it... third times a charm.. I hope! After dropping Morg at the airport, Karlene Jean and I cruised our way (once more) up to Kaikoura. It is such a beautiful place, that I can't seem to stay away from. I stopped at the lookout, to admire the mountains and the ocean, before settling myself back into the 11 bed dorm. As miserable as that sounds, I quite liked it.. well, minus the snoring. I do not understand how people do not wake themselves up when they sound like a freight train coming through the walls?? How is this possible? Snoring is something earplugs cannot defeat.
