Geo: -42.4023, 173.681From Glacier Land we continued our tour round South Island, crossing over through Wanaka and Cromwell to the east coast. In Cromwell we stopped off to visit an old gold mining site, look at the equipment used and the miners homes, and try our hand at gold panning. I was surprised to hear that many of the early miners were Chinese. Our guide made the point that few of the miners made any money as the large companies and business men of the time tied everything up so that miners had to pay them high rates for food, water, hire of equipment etc. and by the time they had paid all these charges and visited the bars they rarely had money left over. Gold mining, even panning, requires a lot of water. The panning ... read more

Hello again. It was sunny and warm when I arrived in Kaikoura, I knew my accommodation was self catering and out of town so I went to the supermarket to get some provisions. The guy who owned the accommodation came to pick me up and I was impressed when he showed me to my apartment. It was sooooooo peaceful and quiet - just what I needed to recharge my batteries. After a good night's sleep I was ready for a day of action! I borrowed the owner's bicycle seeing as I was out of town. Now it's been some years since I rode a bike and it took a while for me to get into the swing of it as I rode along the main east coast highway! He had given me some directions to get ... read more

Wed 9th 5am came so early but it was so worth it. Today we swam with wild dolphins. We used a company called Dolphin Encounters. The company is extremely eco friendly, but some would debate that being they are bringing hundreds of people into the ocean a day and dropping them off smack dab in the middle of gigantic pod of dolphins but they claim to never feed the dolphins and that the dusky dolphin enjoys the interaction with people. All I know is I definitely could tell they enjoyed our company once I got in the water. We loaded up in 3 different yachts and headed out into the pacific searching for the dolphins. The ocean was extremely rough, we were hitting 10 foot swells left and right. Before we even located the dolphins ... read more

Thursday Feb 10th "Of all the things about me that could frighten you, you worry about my driving? Unknown Well actually over here one might worry about my driving. Driving on the left can be a little bit of a challenge. Having done it for a month two years ago I was pleasantly surprised how quickly it came back. There is a big “Keep Left” sticker on the dash of the rent a car so that helps. I only had one momentary lapse, but it was out in the middle of nowhere after I had pulled over to take a picture. I corrected within 50 ft. I got under way about 11:00 leaving Christchurch without getting lost. It is one of those places where I would swear I’m driving north and I’m driving south. Up the ... read more

New Zealand er 270.534 kvadratkilometer. Det er mere end fem gange saa stort som Danmark, men kun halvt saa stort som Frankrig. Her bor 4 millioner mennesker. Selv om der ikke er tale om enorme afstande, har det vaeret en rundtur med mange indtryk. Varieret natur, forskellige mennesker og mange oplevelser. Selvfoelgelig er der altid noget ... read more

Saturday 5th February– Fox Glacier to Christchurch Early start to catch the train through the Southern Alps and into that small part of England in New Zealand: Mount Cook – Watched Mount Cook appear and disappear into the clouds several times as we eat breakfast in Fox Glacier – never did get a photo though. TranzAlpine – Travelled through the mountains from west to east coast (4 hours), watching the mountain scenery unfold. Christchurch – Reminders everywhere (street names, buildings, gardens) of the early English settlers in Christchurch – a pretty little city with relaxed vibe. Sunday 6th February – Christchurch in the Heat A day exploring Christchurch slowly as we deal with the extreme heat: More Weather – The tail end of the cyclone that hit Cairns earlier caused record high temperatures in NZ, including ... read more

The drive up to Kaikoura on State Highway 1 was absolutely gorgeous!! Every turn you took there was something new to see even on the long straight roads where barely another car passed you. The hawks or falcons that were around were just magnificent and cruised along beside the road for ages though the minute Mark got the camera out they would drop down behind some trees or land on the ground!! When we turned onto the coast the scenery was beautiful. The road was very windy so I had to keep my eyes on the road but we stopped every now and then just to look at the beaches and bays. We stopped at one point as we had been told that often seals were basking on this particular beach but we found none there ... read more

Left Queenstown on Monday to drive towards Lake Tekapo. Didnt really want to leave as love Queenstown, would def like to have stayed there longer! Anyway! Headed to Lake Tekapo which again is another glacier lake and of course stunning! Arrived about 1pm so decided to do a horse trek around the lake which was so much fun! Havent been on a horse since Costa Rica so legs hurt quite a bit the next day! The hostel we stayed at is right on the lake so our bus driver announced that we should have a group BBQ which was fab! So much veggie food too thank goodness as we dont normally get a thing! Spent the evening drinking in our hostel room (too many bugs outside!) before getting up to head to Christchurch! Not a fan ... read more
