This morning we went whale watching. We were slightly unnerved when we turned up to find a ‘seasickness warning’ against our trip. It was quite choppy out at sea, with waves of around 2 metres, but it was made worse by the fact that we were required to stay in our seats indoors until we got to the place where the whales had been sighted. Needless to say that it wasn’t long before some people started to make use of the white paper bags in the seat back pockets!! Not us luckily! We got to see a huge sperm whale which swam along the surface alongside the boat for a while before diving back to the depths. However we both agreed that the highlight was getting to see a huge number of dolphins playing around the ... read more

Another driving day, as we drove from Golden Bay in the north of the South Island to Kaikoura on the east coast. We passed through very varied scenery - beaches and mountains and vineyards and coastal cliffs. We stopped for lunch at 'The Mussel Pot' in Havelock for some HUGE green lipped mussels which are the speciality of the town - Paul had his grilled with cheese and bacon, whereas mine were boiled in garlic and white wine. And then on to Kaikoura, famous for its wildlife. We saw some seals basking in the sunshine this afternoon and have booked a whale watching trip for tomorrow. You can also pay to swim with sharks if the mood takes you. Weather is still sunny - car's thermometer got to 26 degrees C today, but looks like tomorrow ... read more

Work in progress... Thursday 15th Dec Upon leaving Franz Joseph Tess, Jane, Hannah and Declan stay behind in hopes that the hike will go ahead today. The rest of us have an aching feeling of disappointment as we do not have the flexibility in our plans to choose and so we move on to Queenstown. Driving through countryside that is bursting full of huge lakes and hefty hills is breathtaking. We pass by Lake Wanaka and get a quick stop at Lake Hawea. The water is more blue than I have ever seen. There are many great things about travelling this way but as a photographer, my main bug bare is that you do not have any flexibility to stop where you want to. There have been so many wonderful places I would have loved to ... read more

“Doing” the peninsula hike The only hike outlined in our Lonely Planet is “the” Kaikoura Peninsula Walkway. We drive to the end of the main road where the buildings turn into shack-like creations and then drop out entirely for a brief stretch and the road ends in a parking lot. We quickly ascend up the cliffside and look back toward the mainland. The flat east coast plain breaks abruptly upon the slate mountains where clouds still obscure the tops of the mountains. This would be spectacular with a clear view. It’s still catching with the contrast of grey, white, green, and the ever blue ocean. It’s windy as all get-out but at least there’s no mist! The path takes us along the top of the cliffs past Point Kearn, making us clamber over stiles into cow ... read more

Any port in a storm We go to the Department of Conservation information center in downtown Nelson in the morning but as we had expected, Abel Tasman National Park, our golden destination, has been largely closed off due to mudslides. Three-quarters of the hiking trails are shut down. The friendly staff tell us that it’s looking likely they’ll be re-opened the next day but we have to get to Christchurch by Sunday morning to return the car. Timing is getting tighter. And the friendly staff also tell us that heavy showers are predicted that afternoon. Or perhaps just a light rain…? We look at a weather forecast and scout out Kaikoura, an eastern coast town that a friend had recommended. Though all of NZ looks cloudy, there aren’t any storms predicted in Kaikoura so after ... read more

Sunday and the Whale watching –the sea looked quite calm and the sun was out so we were feeling very positive. When we arrived at the office they told us the weather conditions were bad with swells up to 3 metres and a strong warning about sea sickness plus not to sail if you have back problems, pregnant or under 6 years old. We only qualified on one area, I have sailed in 2 metre swells and been very ill plus Anne is not a very good sailor – that combined with Annes cracked ribs made the decision for us – the lady behind the desk did say to one couple – it seems a lot to pay NZ$145 to be ill. They were extremely honest. The whale watching tour was a gift from my workmates ... read more

Tuesday morning we left Mark n Tracey’s in Christchurch and set off to Kaikoura for a couple of days. The drive to Kaikoura is a lovely scenic setting of the hills and then the east coastline. We arrived at our hostel for the night the ‘Sunrise Lodge’ which was very nice, then unpacked and drove to the seal colony and watched the seals lazing around the rocks, then wandered around town for a few hours. At night we decided to go to one of the caravans on the bay for a seafood snack of scallop and whitebait patties then chilled back in the hostel. We had a 3 bed dorm to ourselves all day, and then just before reception shut at 8pm the owner came in the room with a very smelly Frenchman and booked him ... read more

Up Early to catch the ferry from Wellington to Picton on the South Island, what a change of weather – it is sunny and calm – an excellent crossing with no major waves or swells to cause sea sickness. The sail down the Marlborough Sound was fantastic and we would have paid the fare alone to get these views. Met a very friendly Kiwi who gavea running commentary of where we going and what we were seeing – whilst very interesting it did get a bit wearing after the first hour – so we made our excuses and decided to see for ourselves. Picked up the new car in Picton – a Toyota Camry – nice car but not the same grunt as the Ford Falcon. A quiet drive down to Kaikoura and an excellent hotel ... read more

Greetings from Kaikoura! Sorry it's been a few days since our last post - wifi is surprisingly difficult to find down here. THURSDAY We picked up our van from Escape Rentals in Christchurch. We chose Tangaroa, which is apparently their flagship design. We got a quick orientation, and we were off! Marshall has done an amazing job of driving, so far. Drifting into the other lane isn't really a problem - it's the turning that gets confusing. To help each other out, we decided to describe turns: "short turn" (don't cross another lane) is left, "long turn" (cross a lane) is right. So far, so good! After loading up on groceries, we hit the road for Kaikoura. We cannot say it enough - New Zealand is BEAUTIFUL. Gorgeous, amazing, incredible. Everything is so vibrantly green. And ... read more
