It’s another early start this morning as at 6am I am at the Ocean Encounter centre and getting kitted out in a full wetsuit, wetsuit jacket, hood, snorkel and flippers. After a short safety briefing video around 15 of us pile onto a boat and speed out into the Pacific Ocean. Whilst we are out on the water, the sky goes from black to a magical redy-orange, as the sunrises over the surrounding mountains. It is whilst we are all memorised by the sky the first dolphins are spotted, and then the whole pod of around 200 start to appear. Over the next 2 hours we take three swims with the dolphins, and each time I swim I have more and more dolphins around me. It is just amazing, I had around 15 dolphins swimming around ... read more

Hello All! So we left Haast and Jonny's pride behind and made our way over to Franz Josef Glacier, something which we were both really looking forward to. We decided to take the time to drive via Jackson's Bay which was supposed to be a brilliant drive - and it didn't disappoint. We stopped in Jackson's Bay and walked round with a cup of tea trying to avoid the sandflies. The Bay literally consisted of about 3 buildings and a public toilet but the view over the sea was amazing, unfortunately it was out of season but there tends to be a lot of penguins and other birds there. The rest of the drive to Franz Josef tested Jonnys driving skills. We drove up mountain after mountain on really winding roads and ended up in the ... read more

We'd had to plan today down to the tee as we had finished our Kiwi Experience pass and New Zealand's poor public transport system had let us down. The planning was all going to be worth it - to swim with the dusky dolphins. But then the weather played havoc again, and rough sea conditions meant the likelihood of our trip being cancelled was high. We arrived in Kaikoura (in our seriously old rented Nissan Sunny - which we named Sunshine after our Thai tour guide) to find that the trip would go ahead, but as usual we had to sign our lives away with an additional warning that the sea's were dangerous today! By the time we reached the first dolphin pod, the sea's were a bit ... read more

It was great to end my tour of NZ on a high note. I left Picton on the train bound for Kaikoura the whale watching capital I arrived at that they call the Whaleway Station, very apt. It incorporated the railway and the whale watching station. We left and headed out to sea, it was windy and therefore quite choppy. We headed out to where the continental shelf is, the water just drops into an abyss which is why the sperm whales are found here. There is an abundance of food where the warm waters of the Pacific flow and the cold waters of Antarica. The first stop we made the whale dived just as we arrived, the second time we stopped the same thing happened and I thought that maybe we weren't going to see ... read more

Sadly this will be our final blog from New Zealand, as we are about to fly from Auckland, back to Sydney, to start our tour around Australia. This is a bit of a mammoth blog with lots of photos and even video links. (Appologies!) Our final leg back up New Zealand started at Kaikoura, where we stayed in a nice little hostel called "Fish Tank". As you can probably imagine it was all themed around sealife, including the paintings on the walls and even ceilings - the ceiling of the kitchen was like looking out through the top of a fish tank. There was also a large balcony area overlooking the Kaikoura high street and beach, which was just outside our room, so we ate most of our meals out there which was great. Kaikoura means ... read more

Der Busfahrer erzählt u.a., ... read more

We left Christchurch on Monday 14th Jan and set off along the East coast to Kaikoura which was about 180km away. It was a pleasant drive in sunshine and it seemed like we had left behind the dramatic' Lord Of The Rings' scenery further back down down the coast. On route we picked up a couple of hitch hikers....proper backpackers from Prague & Barcelona....they had been travelling for a year with just their rucksacks, sleeping in kind hearted farmers barns & living off the land & sea....when we dropped them off in Kaikoura the car reeked of BO! We arrived at Kaikura just as it started raining. The black cloud above Annie had followed us yet again! We checked into another 'Top 10 Resort' but this was not even' top 10,000'..... the room was bare apart ... read more

Our last blog was entered out of sequence as we got a bit behind due to lack of Internet connection and having a great time. Lovely motel and slept a little better than I have been. Yummy breakfast prepared by Mr Combes and we packed said our goodbyes and left to tour the wineries. We arrived at Villa Maria at 10am just as it was opening a little early for tasting wine but nevertheless we did and bought some that we can't get in the UK more's the pity. Then on to Matua Valley which seems to have disappeared in the UK and was closed here yet the vines were growing and all looked well. We then drove past a boutique vineyard and then Cloudy Bay but as we were driving to Kaikoura we decided that ... read more

The wind died and we got the chance to go whale watching. Three choices, boat, light aircraft and helicopter. We chose the former on the basis we would get closer, assuming of course we found a whale and there was no guarantee. We turned up at the whaleway station (yes that's the real name as trains stop there also) and were advised sea conditions, following days of gales meant a 3 metre swell. No problem as Sue had taken two magic pills as made up by the local phamacist. They worked a treat as several people were sea sick (including Steve) but Sue was right as rain, if a little spaced out. The coastline in Kaikoura attracts marine life as it plunges to 1500 metres in depth within 3 miles of the shore. This attracts whales ... read more

Travelled south to Kaikoura which is famed for marine life such as whales, dolphins, seals and many sea birds. Went seal watching on a very cold and windy day (see photos). Same cold and windy evening and having enjoyed a wonderful meal and local wines we decided to take a taxi back to the motel. What we failed to consider was that we were located in a rural town and everything closes at 9.30pm, even the local taxi firm. Great food and service beyond the norm at the White Morph restaurant as chef/owner Gary offered to drop us off at our motel. Where else in the world would you get this service.... read more
