I really could have done with a lie in this morning, especially in such a nice bed, unfortunately the other 5 girls are all up at 6.30am to go on a tour. I make the most of being up early and go and sit on the beach to watch the early morning sun rise over the water. I walk into town and head to the information centre to find about a trip to Cape Reinga – the whole purpose of me coming up to Paihia. Whilst there I pick up a leaflet for the Gyunver boat and remember someone telling me along the way that is well worth a trip out on if you have time. So I decide to take the plunge, and as today are the best conditions forecast all week, I just have ... read more

Up early and have a lovely mooch over the bridge to explore the opposite side over the river, which turned out to be just a campsite. So I headed back over and into town for a wander there, though noting was open. I pack up and jump on the shuttle back to Hamilton, which apparently is a new service, otherwise, no way in and out of the town on public transport at the weekend. In Hamilton bus station much to my surprise and joy I find some luggage lockers, so lock my bags away 11am – 1pm and go for a walk along the river path for a couple of hours. Mixed path, mainly alongside the large river, along by the rowing club, by the road, and through some forest, not all scenic but so nice ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Raglan April 27th 2013

Feeling fully refreshed after a good sleep and quiet night, I went for an early morning walk. I am back and ready with several others for the surf car which leaves at 10.30am. However, just as we are about to leave, so other girls arrive and want to join, and faff around for a while, so we eventually leave at 11.30am, with me driving the car to the beach. Luckily the journey isn’t very far as the car is rather old and with 5 of us in there and 5 surf boards on the roof, I was hoping it didn’t collapse on the way! Nether the less we arrive. There is large swell with 5ft waves and a strong onshore wind, so we all surf in the small broken waves, though I did manage to catch ... read more

I am rudely awoken by the unsoothing tones of the only other occupant of the dorm, a rather large and I think female Māori. I leave 'it' to snore contently whilst I go for a wonder round the town. Everyone is just going about their daily business, the town is not rundown but not overly shiny and touristified. I check out and catch the 10.15am local bus to Raglan, and arrive an hour later in the sun. I couldn’t find a hostel listed online, but have a recommendation from some people I've met along the way. I am chatting to two others on the bus, who are also heading there, so we find it together. It is such a cute hostel, very surfer style and laid back. It’s a wood building round a central courtyard which ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Waitomo April 25th 2013

The down side of taking buses, is that you are dictated by their times, and now being out of peak season, there is only one bus out of Waitomo everyday….at 6pm! So this leaves me the whole day to kill. I go for a run in the stunning morning sunshine, and then enjoy a leisurely shower before checking out at 10am. After this I sit on the outside terrace of the café section of hostel, using the internet, before it starts to rain. The rain continues all day, getting very heavy at times, so I am camped out if the café, sorting my photos and working on job applications until 5.30pm. As I am sitting in the café area all day, I decide to order lunch there, and enjoy a chicken wrap which comes with curly ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Waitomo Caves April 24th 2013

I had an early morning start, leaving Rotorua for Waitomo at 7.45am. I had a coach change in a city called Hamilton, and arrived in Waitomo at 11am. Dejavou of being back in Fox glacier or Arthurs Pass appeared as the ‘town’ had one café which doubled as the general store, the i-site (information centre) and then the hostel cum hotel/café/bar/pizzeria where I was staying. Although I booked a 4 bed dorm room, they put me in a twin (bonus) and its ready, so I go and put my stuff in. I guess it is only 11am, and it’s great my room is ready, but the rest of the hostel isn’t. I put my stuff it the fridge in the kitchen, and the place is a sea of litter, dirty pans and flies everywhere….nice. The other ... read more

Such a cute little hostel, newly refurbished and super friendly owners and atmosphere. On the first night we went from only 6 of us in the hostel, to 8 the second and then double figures to around 12 on my final night! But it was nice as majority if us congregated in the lounge/eating area in the evening, and sat around on the sofas chatting, watching tv, and some playing chess. First morning: I now understand why people warned me about the smell. When you open the window it’s like a slap in the face, especially first thing in the morning, when you senses are even more vulnerable! Rotorua is a heavily Māori populated area, and the first area I have really experienced this. The main thing that strikes me about this, is that the atmosphere ... read more

The two German girls in my room were super noisy this morning, chatting in the room, with complete disregard at 7.30am. After an hour of this I was rather fed up, so I gave in trying to sleep and got up. As my bus wasn’t until 4pm this afternoon, I checked out, put all my luggage in storage, and much to my surprise had a highly amusing day. I went for an amazing late breakfast at a place called Bodyfuel – salmon and poached eggs with spinach….yum! Dave and I wondered round town, and noticed there was a home and garden show on. It was a $5 ticket event but as we were walking away a lady offered us two free tickets, so we grateful accepted. This show had such an array of items on sale, ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Taupo April 20th 2013

Early but leisurely start to the day. After breakfast Dave and I rented some mountain bikes and headed off to see what Taupo had to offer! We first headed up and rather (meaning very!) undulating dirt track to Huka falls, where 10,000 cubic metres of water falls a second! The waterfall isn’t very high but very powerful. From the falls we head up to the crators of the moon. We had no idea what to find here, but very pleasantly surprised. It’s a large geothermal area, with smoke rising from natural vents in the ground up all around you and bubbling mud pools. We spent over an hour wandering round and then stopped to have some lunch before hitting the mountain bike trails! With over 50 trails marked through trails through the forest it was hard ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Taupo April 19th 2013

For once I enjoy a lovely sleep, as there are only 4 of us in the room, and we all did the walk yesterday, no-one was up. Had a leisurely start, checking out and then heading to the little café to treat myself to poached egg and bacon for breakfast. I then had to kill time in this tiny place, until the bus out at 1.35pm, so I walked round the village a few times and then sat outside, reading up on the next few places I wish to visit. Alex is also heading to Taupo and in the same hostel there, and we arrive at 4pm, in the beautiful sunshine! We are checking into the hostel which when I hear my name, and there is Dave, he had also arrived today, everyone is on the ... read more
