Hey everyone, We are in Brisbane at the moment having a quiet few days to save some money. We've had an amazing week or so but it's been pricey. From Airlie Beach we took a day tour to the Whitsundays- a group of beautiful islands. We spent quite a while at Whitehaven which was so amazing with its marble effect sand and sea. We also went snorkelling round here and the water was so much clearer than it had been in Cairns. We saw so many tropical fish and they swam right up to you and were nearly touching your face! We also saw an absolute beast fish which was the size of me from my head to my knees but fatter. I got a bit scared snorkelling because my air thingy kept filling up so ... read more

Question: What do you call a cross between a kangaroo and a rat? Answer: A Quokka! As you will know, Australia is home to some of the most dangerous and, frankly, wierdest animals around. The quokka is no exception... After leaving Exmouth and taking a two day bus down to Perth, we met up with my friend Meredith (whom some of you will know from the wedding in Bali) and headed over to Rottnest Island. It got its name from one of the early explorers who thought it was infested with large rats, therefore "Rat's nest". We could see why. At sundown, everyone heads to the only pub on the island, the aptly named Quokka Arms, for a pint and some serious Quokka-spotting (these people are known as "quokka-spotters" - he he). You don't have to ... read more

We expected rain, we expected heat, and we expected humidity; but we got way more heat and humidity than we ever imagined!! My, oh my, was it bloody HOT!!!! Remember that we are no rookies to hot, humid weather after 30+ years of living in southern Florida. This made a good hot, humid August day in FL look like springtime! These two sun worshippers met their match in this hot, humid corner of Australia. After 12 days of trying to deal with it and accept our fate, we hopped on a plane and got out of there. Cable Beach was everything that we had remembered it to be. The beach is a beautifully long, pristine, expanse of sand, surf, and dunes. We were able to enjoy it at 5:30 a.m. and again at 5:30 p.m. The ... read more

viiminen päivä tällä viikolla töissä! jee!!! mä olin Diabetesklinikalla kuuntelemassa ryhmäneuvontaa sekä sitten yksilöllistä ohjausta. Oli ihan mukavaa! Ja Minna seuraili kemoterapian tapahtumia. Se oli saannu pyyhkeen joltain lääkefirman edustajalta. Epistä!! Minna saa aina kaikkee kivaa... :/ Sit mentiin keskustaan ostaan niitä Rolling Stonesin lippuja. Iltapalaks haettiin pizzaa. Nami nami!!... read more

MORE PHOTOS TO COME. THIS COMPUTER IS REALLY SLOW A really bad nights sleep because of the freezing cold was followed by a cold morning in the Blue Mountains. The walk to the abseiling centre didnt take long, then pretty much went straight to the moutains! Ian and Kam got us harnessed up, they quickly went through it all and off we went! ok, so it was only a 4 metre high rock but it was still new to me! we then practiced on a 20 meter cliff, then on the 30 meter cliff i managed to go upside down. Don't really know what happened there, it was just as i went off the top my legs seemed to give way! i didnt panick!! well...maybe a little. The harness hurt so much, i have bad bruises ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Townsville April 6th 2006

Summary: I've been struggling (not that much) against north, north-easterlies as I'm crossing largish bays to Townsville (where are the south-east trade winds that are suppose to blow day and night in this area this time of year?). Day 61 Abbot Point There's a large pier here where they load coal. I don't think one is supposed to land here, but, the place look deserted, and the beach looked good, so I did. When I took off (at 2 in the morning), I did see some activity on the pier. Day 62 Cape Upstart On landing, I met the "mayor" of Cape Upstart - Andy (he kind of watches over the (mostly deserted) vacation homes on the cape. He invited me up for a meal of grilled stakes and onions - that sure hit the spot. ... read more

When we got to Rockhampton we stopped as “Sizzlers” which the Australian version of Ponderosa steak house. Food was ok, and most of all Wes ate a lot, which has been rare around here. More tomorrow! And so the journey began... Perth - Sydney After being in a total state of denial for so long I think it finally sunk in on take-off from home that I don't know when I will be looking back down on little Perth again. I didn't want to become a blubbering wreck on the plane though so pulled it together with only a few quiet tears gently consoled by the two leopard-skin clad women I was sitting between (don't ask) So even though I dont know when I will get back to the Island - this is just one big holiday and I am taking the long way home. L.A Airport I dont know what it is about me but I was swabbed for bomb residue, scanned, shoes removed and inspected (at which point i was ... read more
