I rose from my bed early Wednesday morning caught a bus into town connecting with the Fremantle train around 8 am, when we arrived at Freo we went for a vegetarian breakfast at Dome. Unfortunately for us none of the museums were open yet so we visited the Round House first before moving on to the excellent Shipwreck Museum near the Marina which featured the wreck of the Batavia and then the equally great Maritime Museum which featured the magnificent Australia 2 racing yacht. Next we jumped on the free bus to the Fremantle gaol, the tour guide was both interesting and at times amusing unfortunately we had some whiny kids and a couple of released criminals who absurdly thought they were something special. This gaol was a tough place to be in its day, it ... read more

Perth – Fremantle We arrived early in Freemantle and were able to leave the ship by 11:00. We hooked up with Frances and Susan, Aussie sisters, and made our way to the train, a short 15-minute walk. It was interesting to watch the towns go by and strange to see immaculate stations and lively areas around the tracks. No trash or dilapidated buildings here. This place is booming. There is construction everywhere. Perth is a modern city with skyscrapers and a very young vibe. All the major accounting firms are here in close proximity to the headquarters of the large mining concerns. WA (West Australia) is rich in natural resources and that wealth is reflected in the city. Perth runs complementary buses on three different routes. We picked one that we thought would take us to ... read more

What has been going on the past 5 weeks, which are also the first 5 weeks of my trip to Australia, WA, Perth area. I flew via Singapore, had a 19 hour lay over. I must say Singapore hasn't impressed me at all. The airport is massive, with really convenient beds for napping. Other companies can learn something about hospitality from Singapore Airlines. I'll post some photo's but I rather fast forward to Australia! Staying in Fremantle, Freo for 'locals', is a suburb from Perth where the harbour is situated. It has the famous cappuccino strip, with wide range of bars and restaurants. We're right around the corner. The hostel is not really big, what makes it for me, easier a nice place. My first aim was between joining in on little trips from the hostel ... read more

Well yesterday we took the bus and then the train to get into Perth City Centre to check out what Perth has to offer. We had read in our Lonely Planet guide which is starting to be our travel bible that Kings Park was supposed to be one of its highlights. So get to Perth and another bus needed to be taken to get to the Park. The park main attractions were its botanical gardens and its lotterywest federation walkway. The walkway is a long glass structure that allows you to walk among the treetops. I also read somewhere which I think must have been from the internet that the walkway sways so I was a little bit worried as I do not like heights. Anyway we found the walkway it was ok but to be ... read more

Well we have arrived in Western Australia and after a good nights sleep we decided that we should go and explore Fremantle which is where we are staying around 35 minutes outside Perth. I decided that I would not book us a hotel as they are so expensive over here and found this great little cottage on the internet. Wow what a place and it even has its own kitchen. Which I know sounds silly but we have not been able to cook anything since July so every time we want a meal we have to look at a menu - this can get really tedious you know. Well anyway off we pop to find the bus to take us into Fremantle which is a lovely little town. The first thing that hits us in this ... read more

Freemantle Mum and I flew back to Perth. James and Dad were already there because they had caught an earlier flight and thought they were so cool. Mum watched a movie called the Black Balloon on the plane and cried because the family in the movie reminded her of our family. One of the kids was normal and the other one had autism. When we got back to Perth we moved our caravan to Fremantle for 2 weeks. I met friends yet again who were in the caravan next to us called Karl and Sontier. It turns out they saw us on the Gibb River Road. They recognized our car and Mum’s red dress. First we went to the zoo in Perth. It was amazing and we had a great day. We caught the ... read more

Carnarvon The best part about Carnarvon is that I made a really good friend there. His name was Maverick. We used my games like Skylanders, Mario 2012 Olympics Games on his Wii. He had a pet galah. I used to make him dance by bending up and down. There was a new space center that was opened by Buzz Adlerian. We took Maverick with us. We got to sit inside a space capsule that the astronauts use to land back on earth. The rest of the space center like the information and that was a bit boring. The Satellite dish look out was awesome. It was really high up and the view was amazing. Maverick didn’t go up there. He thought it was too scary. I was sad to say goodbye to my friend. ... read more

Not much to report on Day 4 but preparations! Typical in a way I suppose it all comes down to the last day to get our house in order! Camping supplies, food and anything we thought we’d need we scraped together today. First stop was Harvey Norman to Price an inverter to charge laptops off the 12V cigarette lighter in the car! A vital tool for the modern day backpackers! We were a bit suspicious when the salesman offered us the inverter for $90 straight off the mark even though it was priced at $100 but sure we said we’d take it anyways! Next stop was Kmart and camping supplies were the target. Fair play, Kmart isn’t known for quality but we’re on a budget so tents, tarps, cookware and even fishing gear was purchased here! ... read more

Sightseeing was the focus of Day 3 and hopefully there will be plenty more to be done based on the success of today! We started off with a drive along the Port of Fremantle taking in the boat yards and cranes along with the quaint town of “Freo” itself. Next stop was King’s Park. After 3 months in Perth I still hadn’t been to King’s Park, and with Coley now in tow it was the perfect opportunity to see this amazingly place that I had heard so much about from family, friends and colleagues. To be fair, it didn’t disappoint and it was a pity we didn’t have time to spend longer there but what we did see was worth it! Great views of Perth and Swan River were readily available and so we took our ... read more

Day 2 of Colman and Gaffers Most Bogus Adventures is the day that the car actually came into our ownership. The pair of us, it could be said, maybe, overindulged in Fremantle the night before. We were possibly celebrating the purchase of our new car or maybe Colman was introducing himself slowly to the Aussie way of life, again, after his stint in the Philippines. Either way, Day 2 started off with a pair of sore heads! Waking up late and realising that the car would be dropped off soon and the owner would be requiring payment, we struck off looking for an ATM, only for both of us to have trouble getting the money due to Daily Limit withdrawals. A dash back home and after a few “quick” phone calls the Daily Limits were adjusted ... read more
